Requirements:

1.  Attendance: This course is 100% online.  Exams will be proctored through the TLC.

            It is the student's responsibility to drop the course through the college if warranted.  However, the instructor reserves the right to drop any student if it is apparent that the student is no longer active in the course.  The student should not assume that s/he will automatically be dropped from the course.

            If you are having problems with your internet connection and/or computer, it is your responsibility as the student to find an alternative means to complete your scheduled assignments (including quizzes, and discussion board posts) on time.

2.  Exams:  Three exams worth 100 points each and a final exam worth 100 points, for a total of 400 points will be given.  Each exam will be multiple choice and taken on our class website.  The exams will be closed book & closed notes and will be proctored through the TLC.

3.  Quizzes:  A quiz for each chapter will be posted.  Each quiz will be open book, open notes and will consist of 10 multiple choice questions, worth 1 point each, for a total of 10 points each.  These quizzes can be found under “Quizzes” on our class website.  There will be a time limit of 20 minutes for each quiz.  One point will be deducted for each minute over the allotted time.

4. Assignments: You are responsible for completing the “Chapter Assignment” for each chapter.  These assignments can be found under “Assignments” on our class webpage.  Each 1-2 page assignment will be worth 10 points.  You are responsible for backing up your own work.  What this means is that you should save a copy of each assignment on your own computer/disk/drive just in case there are technical problems with the submission of your assignment.  The best option is to write up your assignment in your own word processor, save it, and then copy and paste it into the website to submit it to me.

5.  Class Discussion:  Discussion topics will be posted on the course Discussion Board for each chapter.  You will be required to post an answer to one of the questions, and respond to at least one other students' comments each chapter.  (This means that you will post a minimum of 2 messages for each chapter.)  Each chapter will be worth 10 points.

Grading:

The total maximum points that could be accumulated in this class will be 940.  However, the on-campus exams will be graded on a curve.  Thus, the highest grade achieved by a student on each test will be considered to be the total maximum points, therefore it is impossible to predict what the actual maximum points will be for the class.  However, a standard grading scale will apply:

A = 90-100%              D = 60- 69%

B = 80- 89%               F = 59% and below

C = 70- 79%

The instructor will indicate the grading scale for each test after grading is completed and post it on-line.  Each student will be able to check their grade at any point in the semester, on-line.

Other:

1.  Late papers: will not be accepted. The instructor will accept assignments early.  Assignments (includes quizzes, assignments and discussion reactions) will be due at 11:00 p.m.

2.  Attendance during examinations: expected.  Make arrangements ahead of time with the instructor if you must miss an examination.  In rare circumstances, the instructor may give make-up examinations for good cause, but the grade will be penalized 10 points for each day late.  THERE WILL BE NO MAKE-UP FOR THE FINAL EXAM without overwhelming good cause.

3.  Cheating: Cheating and/or plagiarism will result in a failing grade and/or expulsion from the course -- refer to the college guidelines regarding cheating.  According to the Websters New World Dictionary, to plagiarize means "to take (ideas, writings, etc.) from (another) and offer them as one's own."  This also includes (but is not limited to): copying and pasting information from the Internet, submitting a paper that you did not write for this course yourself, or submitting a recycled paper.  If you are caught, you will be referred to the Dean of Students for disciplinary action.

4.  Class behavior:  it is expected that students will respect each other and the instructor on-line.  If a student receives 3 warnings, they will be removed from the course.  Please remember that there are fellow humans on the other end of your computer.

5.  "I" Grades:  According to the college policy, you may request an Incomplete, "I," after the last day to drop only in verifiable cases of emergency when the student is unable to complete the course due to extenuating circumstances which occur during the final weeks of the course.

            Approval to receive an "I" and assignment of a replacement grade are at the discretion of the instructor.  The student must arrange with the instructor to complete the work for the course prior to the end of the following semester.  You may not re-enroll in a class in which an "I" is pending.

6.  Students with internship experience earn more money and find jobs faster than classmates without internship experience.

7.  Changes to the syllabus:  The instructor retains the right to make changes and/or alterations to this syllabus.  If any changes are made, the instructor will notify the students.

Library Resources

College of the Canyons maintains a commitment to working with instructors to imbed information literacy skills in their courses in a manner that directly addresses the needs of distance learning students.  As such, the library provides numerous resources that distance learning students are able to utilize from home, or other campuses, through the Internet and by phone:

  • Remote access to the library periodical database, containing citations, abstracts and full-text articles from over 10,000 publications;
  • Access to specialized databases that focus on current and historical events;
  • Reference assistance to students via phone, email and (in the future) chat sessions;
  • Subject-specific Research Guides and a list of Useful Internet Resources available on the library web site that pinpoint the best quality resources in a number of different subject areas;
  • Access to electronic course reserve materials in accordance with copyright fair use policies.

For more information, contact Ron Karlin at ron.karlin@canyons.edu

Schedule:

Generally, professors expect a student to spend 2-3 hours of outside work for every 1 hour of lecture each week.  That rule applies to on-campus classes.  Since our class is on-line, we have to “make-up” the time that we would have spent together in class in addition to those hours of study time.  This means that you should be spending about 9–12 hours a week on this class, in order to do well in the course.

Assignments (includes quizzes, assignments and discussion reactions) will be due at 11:00 p.m.
