TEXT: College Algebra, 10th Edition, by Lial, Hornsby, and Schneider

WEBSITE: http://www.canyons.edu/faculty/shankss/

Student Learning Outcome:

Analyze and graph polynomial, rational, logarithmic, and exponential functions

Grading Policy:

Your course grade will be based primarily on chapter tests. Five tests will be given, and each test is worth 100 points. There are no make-ups. I will drop your lowest test grade, so if you miss one, that will be the one dropped. Homework will be assigned at each class meeting. Rather than collect homework, I will give quizzes at the beginning of many class meetings. They will be worth 5 points each, and if you miss any due to lateness or absence, you receive a 0 on them. There are no make-ups on quizzes The problems on these will come directly from the homework, so you may use your own solutions, but not a solutions manual. You must show work on all your quiz and test problems or no credit. The final exam will be worth 200 points. The grading scale on tests, as well as your course grade, is as follows: 90-100 A, 80-89 B, 70-79 C, 60-69 D, and below 60 F. If you have 90% of the total possible points, you will receive an A, 80% a B, etc. No incompletes will be given, and no grades will be rounded.

Course Content (Chapters covered):

2.  Graphs and Functions

3.  Polynomial and Rational Functions

4.  Inverse, Exponential, and Logarithmic Functions

5.  Systems and Matrices

6.  Analytic Geometry

7.  Further Topics in Algebra

Other Pertinent Information:

A scientific calculator is required. If you are absent 5 times, you will be dropped from the class. If you become seriously ill, please let me know. We will cover one lesson every class meeting, and the lessons are long, so try not to be absent. If you are more than 10 minutes late, please do not come to class. It is extremely disruptive to have a student enter the room in the middle of class activities. If a student is constantly late to my class, I count the time missed toward absences. Any student who leaves early will be considered absent that day and receive no credit on his/her quiz. When the time missed exceeds 325 minutes (5 class meetings), the student will be dropped from the class. Do your homework as soon as you can after each class meeting. Read the material in the next lesson before class. In this course you must expect to spend at least two hours on homework for every hour in class. If you cannot make that kind of time commitment, then you should not take the class. Please do not chew gum, and pay attention. Turn off electronic devices before you come to this class. Please raise your hand if you have a question, and do not talk. If you do, I will tell you to stop, and if you continue, I will tell you to leave. You are here to learn mathematics, and I am here to teach you. I expect you to demonstrate courtesy and consideration toward your peers and the instructor.
