Biotechnology

Looking Into Microscopes
for Macro Opportunities

by Jim Wolf

Former Los Angeles mayor, Richard Riordan, recently declared Biotechnology as one of the most important emerging industries for Los Angeles and all of California. JP Morgan Securities Inc. predicts that there will be a four-fold ratio (in favor of employees) of jobs to trained workers in the Biotech field. Across the nation, faculty traditionally trained in biology are putting on lab coats again to gain experience in this emerging field.

COC offers an exciting, up to date, and technologically advanced biotechnology curriculum. Many UC and CSU schools emphasize the more theoretical approaches, and not until graduate school do most students get hands on training in the more sophisticated aspects of the lab, thus, COC offers students the best possible exposure to the immense and dynamic field of biotechnology. With as little as 24 units of core curricula, students can compete for entry-level positions at local biotech companies. As part of their diverse biotech training, students receive training in professional development, including oral and written communication, resume writing, and interview skills.

Internship programs are numerous and students are encouraged to pursue an internship along with their studies. By trying out a career in biotechnology early in their careers, students are given first- hand exposure to the demands of this field. In addition to training, most internships are paid positions and companies will often pay for the students to further their education while working.
Students of biotechnology will be there first hand to enjoy the thrill of discovery and the financial benefits of this burgeoning industry.

If you haven't attended the CLUES (California Lutheran University Enriched Science) training sessions that CCBC and CLU are co-sponsoring, then you wouldn’t know how much they could use a thermal cycler.  Although they train faculty using electric frying pans as thermal cyclers, they need to magnify the DNA they use in the training modules at a faster rate.  The thermal cycler was originally donated to Ventura College by Stratagene in San Diego.
