This course assists students in making career
decisions. Emphasis is on selecting a career based
on personal interests, abilities, values, and goals

Becoming a Successful Distance Learning Student
(Offered credit/no credit basis only. Non-degree
applicable.)
This course is designed for students who want to
acquire the skills necessary to be a successful
distance learning student including word processing,
synchronous (chat) and asynchronous (e-mail)
discussion tools, and Internet research. Includes a
review of personal learning styles and time
management skills. Familiarity with the Windows
operating system and keyboarding is assumed.

abilities and values. It includes research labor
market information, job search strategies, resume

pre-enrollment counseling assistance in course

COUNS 095

Intensive Workshop for Positive Change
(Offered credit/no credit only)
This course provides students in long term academic
difficulty with the skills necessary to improve
academic performance. Emphasis is on
self-assessment, learning strategies, and action
plans to achieve positive change. Students must
complete a 1 day, 8 hour workshop in order to
receive credit. Students sign up online and complete
online assignments prior to the workshop.

Success Strategies for the Reentry Student

This course provides an exploration of intellectual,
psychological, social and physical factors that
impact lifelong learning, well being, and success.
Topics include Motivation & self-efficacy, critical
& creative thinking, effective study strategies with
children underfoot, health & lifestyle choices,
relating to others in a diverse world, time, money &
stress management, career exploration and transfer
and educational planning. |

Career Life-Planning (CSU transferable - CSU
GE Area E)
This course introduces self-assessment tools to
identify college majors and careers by clarifying
interests, skills, values, and personality type.
Students also examine the decision-making process,
self-management, life roles and goal-setting. It
includes a review of labor market trends, career
research, interviewing skills, resume and cover
letter writing, and job search strategies.

Introduction to College and Strategies for Success

This course focuses on the various components
necessary for college planning and academic success.
Readiness for college will be explored with special
attention given to students' responsibilities, study
skills assessment, personal values, motivation, and
goal setting. Topics include values clarification,
decision making, study skills, choosing a major, the
responsible student, and educational planning.
Students will identify their educational goals and
develop a personal plan to reach those goals. |

University Transfer Planning (CSU transferable)
This course provides students with information and
resources to facilitate a smooth transfer to 4 year
colleges and universities. Topics include UC/CSU
applications, major and general education
requirements, financial aid/scholarships,
personalized student education plans, and analysis
of factors involved in the selection of transfer
schools. (CSU & UC transferable) |
COUNS 142

Learning to Learn (Associate Degree
Applicable-CSU Transferable)
Focuses on seven strategies that develop
self-regulatory learning: self-monitoring,
motivation, goal-setting, active listening,
note-taking, information processing in the brain,
and reading for comprehension. Students will combine
theory and practice to become successful learners
and successful college students. |
COUNS 150

Student Success
This course is designed for new students as a
complete orientation of the responsibilities and
benefits of higher education. Educational planning,
goal setting, and career choices are examined. Study
and life survival skills are provided to ensure a
successful academic experience. |
