COUNS 100 –Success Strategies for the Reentry Student
This course introduces reentry students to the study of the
educational, psychological, intellectual, social and
health-related factors that impact lifelong learning,
well-being, and success. Topics include: Motivation,
self-discovery, creative & critical thinking, health/stress
management, self-efficacy, study strategies, communication,
campus resources, goal setting, educational planning, and
career exploration. This 3 unit course meets the CSU GE Area
E requirement.
The course was developed by Carolyn Powell, Counseling
faculty whose passion was working with Adult Reentry
Students. She is now retired, but we appreciate the many
contributions she made over the years to the Counseling
Department.
This semester
the course will be taught by Debbie Sall, Adjunct Counseling
Faculty, who has worked in higher education for over 10
years, at both the university level at CSUN, and at the
community college level, including the past five years at
College of the Canyons. She graduated from CSUN with a BA
in Liberal Studies, and obtained her Master’s in Counseling
and Guidance from California Lutheran University. It was
while working at CSUN in the Admissions and Records Office
that Debbie discovered how rewarding it is to work with
college students of all ages, especially reentry students.
As a reentry student herself, Debbie understands the unique
challenges these students face and the concerns they have
when returning to school after long absences.
This
is a wonderful class to begin your college experience and
guide you in the right direction towards success.
