Math, English & ESL Testing
Frequently Asked Questions
The purpose of the tests
The Computerized Placement Tests (CPTs) were
developed by the College Board to provide
information about your level of skill in reading,
writing, and mathematics that is required for
success in college. By assessing your ability in
these areas, the CPTs help to determine the reading,
writing and mathematics courses most appropriate for
you at this time.
What is my first step?
File an application with the Admissions & Records
Office (A-101)
What do I take with me on the test day?
On the day of the test, you must bring a picture ID
and know your social security number or your College
of the Canyons ID number. Pencils and scratch paper
with be provided for you. You may not use textbooks,
notebooks, dictionaries or calculators on the test.
Please respect the needs of other students that are
testing. Turn off cell phones and pagers and arrange
for childcare for young children.
How long does the test session last?
It will take you approximately two hours to finish a
complete test. (Reading, writing and math). Because
you will go at your own pace, you may complete the
test in less than two hours. Each test is designed
using adaptive techniques. This means that the
computer automatically determines which questions
are presented to you based on your responses to
prior questions. The tests can also be taken in
part.
What is ESL?
ESL is the abbreviation for English as a Second
Language. We have a computerized ESL test that
consists of three parts: sentence meaning, reading
skills, and language usage.
What are the fees for taking the test?
There are no fees for taking any of the tests.
How often can I test? A student may repeat any test in the assessment
array once every six months. The retest periods are
from the beginning of November to the end of March
and the beginning of April to the end of October.
If the student tests into the same level twice,
they are required to take that class. If a student
has received a grade in Math or English they may not
retest and must finish the course sequence. If the
student is currently enrolled in a Math or English
class they may not retest.
