Automotive Technology
The demand for automotive technicians has never been greater. More than 60,000 new technicians are needed every year, and that need is likely to grow in the years ahead. The complexity of modern vehicles makes automotive service and repair a high-tech profession, which requires technicians to work with some of the most sophisticated computerized control systems on the market. It’s a job you can be proud of in a market where your technical skills will remain in high demand!

National Automotive Technicians Training Foundation
What kind of training
will I receive at College of the Canyons?
The Automotive Technology program is a two-year program
designed to prepare students with the industry-defined, entry-level
skills needed for an automotive technician position. These skills may
lead to rewarding jobs at dealerships, independent automotive
repair facilities or city/county agencies. Students may also choose to
complete an associate in science degree or a certificate of achievement
in Automotive Technology. The program provides in-depth
training with extensive hands-on experience. In the classroom, students
learn the theoretical aspects of automotive diagnosis, repair
and service. In the automotive laboratory setting, students will apply
the theory learned in the classroom.
Why Choose Automotive Technology?
If you like working with your hands, problem solving, computers and
cars, then a career in automotive technology may be right for you.
The service technician jobs of today are not the “grease monkey”
jobs of yesteryear. Today’s automobiles and trucks are extremely
technological machines that require computer-literate technicians.
What is the employment outlook?
As long as there are vehicles on the road, there will be a need for
highly skilled automotive technicians. The supply of trained automotive
technicians cannot keep up with the demand. Automotive dealerships
and independent service providers are constantly in need of
trained technicians. Projections from the U.S. Department of Labor,
Harris Interactive Research, Automotive News Magazine and other
sources, indicate the demand for trained automotive technicians will
not diminish in the near future. Technicians currently in the field will
have to continue their training as new technological advances are
made in the industry. Equipped with this training, you will have job
mobility and the security of knowing that your skills will always be in
demand, anywhere.
The certificate and degree program both
require students to complete internships or
work experience in the field. This
provides students who complete the
program with the advantage of
establishing a working relationship
with an employer.
