So, why choose welding for a career?
A Hobart Institute of Welding survey of more than 200 manufacturers and fabricators revealed that their No. 1 concern is the lack of trained welding operators nationwide. Welders are in high demand and can often earn higher wages with better job security in comparison to other building trades. Other welding-related fields that welders often consider later in their careers are weld inspection, sales, supervision and business owner.
What is involved with being a welder?
Welders commonly fuse metal with welding processes that provide extreme heat. Because of its strength, welding is used to construct and repair parts of ships, automobiles, spacecraft and thousands of other manufactured products. The welding environment can range from working on high-rise buildings to cutting metal 300 feet underwater (or below the surface of the sea).
What is the outlook for welders?
The U.S. is experiencing a shortage of qualified welders to serve current and future needs. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, “…job prospects should be excellent as employers report difficulty finding enough qualified people. In addition, many openings are expected to arise as a large number of workers retire over the
next decade.”
