Criminal Reporting Procedures
Every College of the Canyons student, faculty
member, employee, or visitor who observes any suspicious
or criminal activity should notify the Department of
Campus Safety immediately. The Department of Campus
Safety will conduct a field investigation report and, if
necessary, refer the matter for internal or external
investigation by proper authorities.
For Emergencies:
- Valencia Campus call 7 from a campus
phone or the on duty campus safety officer at 510-3882 from
a non-campus phone or cell phone.
- Canyon Country Campus call the switchboard
at 476-3801.
Stay on the line with the
dispatcher or until contacted by the responding officer.
Crimes In Progress - Do not attempt to
apprehend or interfere with the criminal except in case
of self-protection. If it is safe to do so, stop and
take time to get a good description of the criminal.
Note height, weight, sex, race, approximate age,
clothing, method and direction of travel, and his/her
name if known. All this takes only a few seconds, and
is of the utmost help to the investigating officers. If
the criminal is entering a vehicle, note the license
plate number, make and model, color and outstanding
characteristics.
Crime Prevention
One of the essential ingredients of any successful crime
prevention program is an informed public. It is the
intent of the Santa Clarita Community College District
to inform students and staff, in a timely manner, of any
criminal activity or security problems which may pose a
reasonable threat to their public safety. Such
information will normally be distributed to students
through this website, the college newspaper The Canyon
Call, Public Information Office, Instructors and campus
wide emails.
Another critical element of a campus safety program is
training. The Campus Safety Department, Student Health
Services and the Student Activities offices sponsor
programs on various safety topics.
Finally, all effective crime prevention programs include
some measure of people watching out for one another.
All staff and students are asked to be ALERT, SECURITY
CONSCIOUS, INVOLVED and TO USE THE BUDDY SYSTEM.
If you see a crime, please report it to
We Care
The Buddy System
Walk with a buddy('s) to which ever vehicle is parked the
closest. Everyone gets in and immediately locks the
doors. Drive to the other vehicles. Wait for your
buddy('s) to get in their vehicle and start it up. Once
they have started to move the vehicle you can then leave
together.
