Applicants - Placement Tests

The Math, English & ESL Placement Tests can be taken in the following Assessment Center:

The Computerized Placement Tests (CPTs) were developed by the College Board to provide information about your level of skill in reading, writing, and mathematics that is required for success in college. By assessing your ability in these areas, the CPTs help to determine the reading, writing and mathematics courses most appropriate for you at this time.

What is my first step?

  • File an application with the Admissions & Records Office (A-101)

What do I take with me on the test day?

On the day of the test, you must bring a picture ID and know your social security number or your College of the Canyons ID number. Pencils and scratch paper with be provided for you. You may not use textbooks, notebooks, dictionaries or calculators on the test.

Please respect the needs of other students that are testing. Turn off cell phones and pagers and arrange for childcare for young children.

How long does the test session last?

It will take you approximately two hours to finish a complete test. (Reading, writing and math). Because you will go at your own pace, you may complete the test in less than two hours. Each test is designed using adaptive techniques. This means that the computer automatically determines which questions are presented to you based on your responses to prior questions. The tests can also be taken in part.

What is ESL?

  • ESL is the abbreviation for English as a Second Language.

We have a computerized ESL test that consists of three parts: sentence meaning, reading skills, and language usage.

What are the fees for taking the test?

  • There are no fees for taking any of the tests.

How long does the test session last?

How often can I test?

  • A student may repeat any test in the assessment array once every six months.

The retest periods are from the beginning of November to the end of March and the beginning of April to the end of October. If the student tests into the same level twice, they are required to take that class. If a student has received a grade in Math or English they may not retest and must finish the course sequence. If the student is currently enrolled in a Math or English class they may not retest.
