WHAT IS A QUIET STUDY
COMMUNITY?
A quiet study community is a group of individuals that
respect each other’s study needs. The MESA Center is
meant to be a quiet area designed to support this type
of study community. This means that you are permitted to
talk quietly. You are encouraged to work together in
groups for your classes, but please do so quietly. If
you become aware that your group is making too much
noise, please ask to reserve a study room. Also remember
that when you are in the MESA Center, laptops and music
devices should be used with headphones and your cell
phone should be on silent.
WHY A QUIET STUDY
COMMUNITY?
A recent survey of students using the MESA Center
indicated that many found MESA to be too noisy for them
to study successfully. Because the MESA Center is a
student study center, it is essential that all of the
students using it are able to study effectively for
their classes. Because we wish to support all of our
student’s needs, we ask that you be aware of the noise
level in the center and help us to keep the decibel
level down.
-
Use your “Quiet Voice”
and keep discussions and noise at a low level
-
Be mindful of others
and respectful of those who are studying quietly
-
Take your
conversations to an area where others will not be
disturbed by them (preferably outside or if
available, a study room)
-
Encourage others to
speak quietly
-
Set your cell phone to
silent or vibrate and when necessary take your phone
conversations outside
-
Refrain from any use
of foul language
-
Refrain from yelling
or talking across the room
WHAT WILL MESA DO?
-
Enforce a “Quiet
Study” policy
-
Ask students to be
quiet if noise levels become excessive
-
Raise awareness about
appropriate MESA Study
Center behavior
-
Enforce a three
strikes rule: Anyone making excessive noise or
disturbing other students will be asked to leave
after two warnings
WHAT ABOUT USING A
STUDY ROOM?
Study rooms are also subject to the quiet study
policy. We ask that you be aware of the volume of sound
that your group generates, so noise from your study room
does not increase the noise level in the rest of the
center. The MESA Center offers three study rooms that
may be reserved by your study group(s). Reservations for
available rooms are made on a first come-first served
basis at the Front Desk.
