#290S Books and Ideas: People of the Book,
by Geraldine Brooks
1:00 - 3:00PM
Room: LIBR 206
Presenter: Lea Templer
Strategic Goal: Teaching & Learning
Book description (amazon.com)-- One of the earliest Jewish
religious volumes to be illuminated with images, the Sarajevo
Haggadah survived centuries of purges and wars thanks to people of
all faiths who risked their lives to safeguard it. Geraldine Brooks,
the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of March, has turned the
intriguing but sparely detailed history of this precious volume into
an emotionally rich, thrilling fictionalization that retraces its
turbulent journey. In the hands of Hanna Heath, an impassioned
rare-book expert restoring the manuscript in 1996 Sarajevo, it
yields clues to its guardians and whereabouts: an insect wing, a
wine stain, salt crystals, and a white hair. While readers
experience crucial moments in the book's history through a series of
fascinating, fleshed-out short stories, Hanna pursues its secrets
scientifically, and finds that some interests will still risk
everything in the name of protecting this treasure. A complex love
story, thrilling mystery, vivid history lesson, and celebration of
the enduring power of ideas, People of the Book will surely be
hailed as one of the best of 2008. --Mari Malcolm

Cancer
1:00 – 3:00pm
Room: Aliso Hall 101
Presenter: Dr. Kelly Cude
FLEX credit – 2 hours
Strategic Goal: Teaching & Learning
While great strides have been made in identifying the causes of
cancer and in extending the life of cancer patients, it is estimated
that cancer will bypass heart disease as the leading cause of death
in the U.S. in 2010 contributing to more than 565,000 deaths.
Additionally, current estimates place the overall lifetime risk of
developing cancer at 1:2 for American men and 1:3 for American
women. While these odds may seem overwhelming, breakthroughs by the
medical research community continue to provide hope for cancer
patients and their families.
Join Dr. Kelly Cude at this repeat presentation of her recent
Scholarly Presentation where she will address the biological basis
of cancer and its treatments, and instill a sense of hope and
empowerment that this disease can be conquered. Each person will
leave with enough knowledge about the disease so that, should they
or a loved one face cancer in the future, they can ask the right
questions, make the right choices, and feel more in control of their
health.

together their separate domains of business education (Chip) and
educational research and textbook design (Dan) to explain with wit
and clarity how anyone can communicate more effectively using the
six elements of “sticky” messages, which they identify and
illustrate. In this workshop, I propose to explain these six

Strategic Goal: Teaching & Learning
A lot of students come to college believing that education
merely entails identifying and recalling information and perhaps
reorganizing it, the two lowest levels of Bloom et al.’s (1956)
taxonomy of cognitive functioning. How can we disabuse them of this
notion in both productive and exciting ways? Come participate in
this workshop on helping students to develop their higher order
critical thinking skills as we tackle questions such as the ones
below with an interdisciplinary panel of COC professors:
• We throw the term “critical thinking” around a lot, but what does
it really mean?
• As an instructor, how do I resolve the tension between the time it
takes to help students think more deeply about the course content
with the desire to cover more course material?
• How can I formulate discussion questions so that students will be
more likely to respond with higher levels of critical thought?
• How can I encourage my students to think critically when I’m
lecturing?
• How can I design class activities so that students will make their
own learning discoveries versus my simply imparting the information
to them?
• What concrete forms might critical thinking take in a variety of
disciplines, such as science , math, English, art, philosophy, and
psychology? And how might I adapt those activities to my own field?
Learning Outcome:
After attending the workshop, participants will be able to:
Design activities which guide students in using higher level
cognitive skills based on Bloom et al.'s Taxonomy of critical
thinking.

#291S Books and
Ideas: Loving Frank, by Nancy Horan
2:30 - 4:30 PM
Room: LIBR 206
Presenter: Diane Ayres
Strategic Goal: Teaching & Learning
Book
Description (amazon.com) --It's a rare treasure to find a
historically imagined novel that is at once fully versed in the
facts and unafraid of weaving those truths into a story that
dares to explore the unanswered questions. Frank Lloyd Wright
and Mamah Cheney's love story is--as many early reviews of
Loving Frank have noted--little-known and often dismissed as
scandal. In Nancy Horan's skillful hands, however, what you get
is two fully realized people, entirely, irrepressibly, in love.
Together, Frank and Mamah are a wholly modern portrait, and
while you can easily imagine them in the here and now, it's
their presence in the world of early 20th century America that
shades how authentic and, ultimately, tragic their story is.
Mamah's bright, earnest spirit is particularly tender in the
context of her time and place, which afforded her little
opportunity to realize the intellectual life for which she
yearned. Loving Frank is a remarkable literary achievement,
tenderly acute and even-handed in even the most heartbreaking
moments, and an auspicious debut from a writer to watch.

Philosopher Reflects on Choice
2:00 – 3:30pm
HSLH 233
FLEX credit – 1.5 hours
Presenter: Michael McMahan
Strategic Goal: Leadership
Do you ever say to yourself, “Why in the world did I (they) make
that choice ?” And in a moment’s reflection, you discover that
maybe the wrong factors and considerations determined the
choice? “And why is it that it’s easier to see the negative
influences on others rather than in ourselves? Change occurs
through reflection and imagination. In this discussion, I want
to look at reflective choice as both a philosophical and
practical issue. I’ll discuss how my own view on the topic has
changed over time and how I see reflection and metacognitive
awareness to play a central role in decision making, and
effective personal and institutional leadership. Drawing upon
current research and studies, I will demonstrate some of the
factors that can lead to faulty decisions, and, conversely,
personal and institutional practices, that might improve
decision making and effective leadership.
Learning Outcomes:
• Recognize some of the more important influences and traits
which play a role in choice and decision making.
• Become more aware of your own manner of decision making and be
able to identify those factors that lead to better
decisions/leadership, and those that lend themselves to poorer
decisions/leadership.

#462S Books and Ideas: The Women: A
Novel, by T.C. Boyle
2:30 - 4:30 PM
PDR #3
FLEX credit - 2 hours
Presenter: Bradley Reynolds
Boyle’s latest novel takes on the architect Frank Lloyd
Wright by examining his notoriously tumultuous relationships
with four women, each unique in her own histrionic way. Narrated
in reverse chronological order by a fictional Japanese
apprentice, the book is extremely readable and deftly builds a
portrait of the artist as pure egoist. Unfortunately, the novel
avoids any sustained consideration of Wright’s relationship to
his art, a passion arguably more important in forming his genius
than any of the women in his life were. Still, it proves an
effective showcase for Boyle’s own strengths as a craftsman. His
prose is full of vivid descriptions and turns of phrase that pop
with a preternatural precision. (book description shamelessly
lifted from the New York Times).

Adobe (29350 Avenida Rancho Tesoro

Presenter: Connie Tripp
On Saturday, April 24, the Library Associates and friends
will visit the historic home of Western legend Harry Carey.
Carey’s home, the Tesoro Adobe, is located in the Santa Clarita
Valley just off Copper Hill Drive (29350 Avenida Rancho Tesoro
Valencia, CA 91354). The adobe and other buildings on the
property (built in the 1920s) served Harry, his son, Harry Carey
Jr., and finally the family that owned the Farmer John Co. The
property is now entrusted to the County of Los Angeles.
During our trip to Tesoro Adobe, we’ll receive a docent-led tour
of the house and other ranch buildings. We’ll also have the
special treat of hearing a lecture on the history of Western
films in the Santa Clarita Valley delivered by College of the
Canyons’ history professor Connie Tripp! A beautiful park
overlooking a small lake will be the setting for a gourmet
picnic lunch catered by Whole Foods.
The cost per person is $20, which includes
lunch and park fees.
Itinerary:
• Meet at the Adobe at 11:00 am for our guided tour
• Lunch and free time Noon—1:00pm
• Lecture at 1:00pm
