Student Success Tips

First Year Survival Tips

  1. Attend Class

    • No bells ringing, more freedom

    • Attendance can affect your grades

    • BE THERE OR BE DROPPED, (other instructors will not drop you, you must do so yourself or risk receiving an “F”)

    • Punctuality is important

      • You may get locked out of your class or dropped from the class if you’re late

      • Don’t arrive at school 5 minutes before class looking for a place to park

      • Look into alternative modes of transportation.

  2. Read the Syllabus

    • Make sure you keep each syllabus for each class in a safe place like a notebook so you can refer to each often during the term for reference to due dates for class assignments and to know when tests are scheduled.

    • Class requirements and instructor office hours are outlined

    • Syllabus will also provide information regarding how to contact your instructor.

  3. Study/Be Prepared

    • For every unit you are enrolled in equals 2 hours of studying per week.
Come to class having ready the required materials/books

    • You will go through the entire book along with all supplies in 16 weeks.

    • Grades never go away

    • Try your hardest!

  4. Visit Your Instructors During Their Office Hours

    • Instructors like to know that their students are interested

    • It doesn’t hurt that an instructor knows your name at the end of the semester

    • Ask questions:

      • If no questions are asked during class, the instructor will continue

      • It is your responsibility to understand the material

      • If you have any questions, ask, because, you will be held responsible for all material and requirements of the class.

  5. Take Advantage of Student Support Services Available on Campus

    • Seek help early, no later than week 8, if you feel overwhelmed or you feel like you are struggling.

    • There are several resources available at College of the Canyons to help you including:

      • Cougar Mentor Program

      • Counseling

      • Financial Aid

      • Transfer Center

  6. Get Involved on Campus

    • Associated Student Government

    • Clubs & Organizations

    • Emerging Leaders Program

  7. Arrange Your Schedule to Meet Your Needs

    • Take into consideration if you are a morning or evening person (don’t sign up for classes in the morning if you are an evening person and vice versa)

    • Make sure to allow time for family commitments, a significant other, and/or work in addition to school.

  8. Allow for Time to Get Used to College of the Canyons

    • Do not fret if you get stressed out a first, the next semester will be easier.

    • Give yourself time to find out what you’re best suited for.
