What is
the Adult Reentry Program?
The Adult Reentry Program assists new, returning and
continuing adult students, approximately 28 years of age and
older. Our services include information sessions, plus
ongoing counseling, and free workshops, support groups, as
well as campus and community referrals and resource
information.

How can
The Reentry Program help me?
The Adult Reentry Program is the only program on campus that
specializes in addressing the needs and concerns of adult
students who are making the transition back to school. By
taking advantage of our services, coming back to school will
be less stressful and your chances for successful completion
of your educational goals will increase greatly.

I'm
nervous about attending college. How can you help me
overcome my concerns?
You're not alone. Many people encounter barriers when
attempting to further their education, such as:

However, it's our experience
that most adult reentry students do very well in their
classes because they tend to be focused on their educational
goals, and they are more disciplined and mature. For help in
overcoming the concerns above, take our
Counseling 100
class.
One of the best ways to ease your anxiety is to talk to an
Adult Reentry Program Counselor who will be able to answer
many of your questions and help you work through your
concerns. The Adult Reentry Program is here to provide
additional resources and information to make your experience
here at College of the Canyons a rewarding and successful
one.

Will I be
the only student in my classes who is older? Will most of
the students be in their twenties?
According to the College of the Canyons’ “Fact Book,” 33
percent of our students are 25 or older, 9% are age30-39, and
15% are 40 or older. You will find a wide variety of age
groups represented in your classes.

I have
severe math anxiety. How can I ever satisfy my math
requirement for graduation? What kind of help is available
for students who struggle with math?
The college offers a workshop and a class for those with
Math anxiety (Math 075 Developing Math Confidence), and
there is free tutoring in the TLC lab.

Why do I
need to see a counselor?
Although meeting with a counselor is not mandatory, it is
highly recommended especially because you have been out of
school for a while. A counselor can help you define your
goals and set up an educational plan. Counselors offer
academic, career and personal counseling. Our counselors
provide semester-by-semester assistance in your class
selections and help with career clarification. The
counselors are particularly sensitive to the problems
encountered by the adult student and work closely with adult
students in an encouraging and supportive way. They have a
wealth of information and experience to draw from to help
you with any barrier you may encounter while pursuing your
education here at COC. We have two counselors who work
closely with adult reentry students, Connie Perez and

I have
taken many college classes previously, how do I know they
will still count?
It is common for adult students to have completed many
college courses prior to coming back to school. The majority
of the classes taken here or at another accredited college
will still count towards your present educational goals. The
best thing to do is to bring a copy of all your college
courses with you when you come into to see a counselor. Your
counselor can give you an idea of what classes will work
with your current academic or career technical major. A
counselor can also recommend a formal evaluation of all
academic work so you can begin to receive college credit
towards your current educational goal and increase
your transferrable grade point average.

How can I
find out what major or course of study would be best for my
interests and future employment?
Work with a counselor and take our
Counseling 100 or
Counseling 111 class. Also, visit the Career Services
department, and begin taking the assessments that measure
your interests, values, abilities, and personality. They are
free of charge! Start taking classes in areas that interest
you. You will find a list of
certificate and
degree programs
offered at College of the Canyons. You can also do volunteer
work, Service Learning and/or an internship to begin to
explore a variety of jobs, work environments, and
industries.

How can I
meet and network with other students who have returned to
school?
We recommend that you begin by attending an information
session and getting your name placed on our mailing list. Our office hours
are 10am to 5pm, Monday- Thursday. Stop by
during that time for a cup of coffee, water and use of
one of the computers in our lab, or to just meet with
friends.

How do I
find out about financial aid for school? What types are
available?

Is
childcare available while I attend day or evening classes?
The college offers childcare services for infants, toddlers,
preschool, and school-age children. You will find
information on the
Childcare Center website.

How do I
find out about housing close to campus?
A housing board is located outside of the Student
Development office in the Student Services Building with
information posted for students looking for roommates and/or
apartments to rent. To place information on the board, stop
by that office, located in the student services building.

We are here to offer whatever
assistance you need to make your time at College of the
Canyons a positive and fulfilling experience.

Do you
have a study center or office?
The Adult Reentry/Veterans Center is located on the Valencia
campus in Building X-9 right near the
Coffee Kiosk. Office hours are 10am to 5pm, Monday
-Thursday. The center has comfortable space
to meet with other Reentry and Veteran students, a computer
lab to do homework, research other colleges and career
information, complete online services like registration
apply for veteran’s benefits, order academic transcript,
etc. There will also be free coffee and water available to
reentry/veteran students. Helpful staff members will be
there to answer to your questions about the college and can
make referrals to other services as needed. For more
