Mission Statement
The College of the Canyons Art Gallery is committed to serving the
college community and the community at large through exhibitions and
programs that enhance curriculum, as well as engage a greater
audience in the visual arts. We hope to challenge and stimulate our
students and the public by exposing them to new ideas and
encouraging them to think independently and creatively about their
work and their world. |

About the Gallery
The College of the Canyons Art Gallery is an independent program
serving the college community and the greater community of the Santa
Clarita Valley. The gallery has been in operation since our
inaugural exhibition in spring 1997 with the opening of the Fine and
Media Arts Building, now known as Mentry Hall. We are located at the
north corner of the ground floor, M-108.

Exhibitions
The gallery curates a variety of exhibitions annually. Our
scheduling policy is geared to an interdisciplinary interpretation
of art and culture that features the works of historical as well as
21st century artists. Through its exhibitions and educational
programs, the gallery is committed to serving our student population
by augmenting our curriculum and encourages public participation in
this process. Along with the exhibition, the Art Gallery may also
present a speaker series which may include lectures, panel
discussions and Q and A sessions with the artist.

Support
Although the gallery
is an instructional tool, we recognize our need for support funds to
sustain the exhibition program, which enriches the college community
and the community at large. We invite you to participate in
supporting our inspiring facility and its longevity by becoming a
member of Friends of the Fine Arts
or through your individual gifts. Sales from our
Gallery Store, which features a variety of
gifts, is an additional financial
source of support. |

COC Student
Art Collection
This is a long term and student-based program providing
students an opportunity to compete on a professional
level and be included in what will become an important
asset for the college. Students learn the importance of
presentation and professionalism, while developing the
interactive skills required to become a successful
artist. |

Director's
Statement and Bio:
I am committed to
the philosophy of the community college system
and feel that the Art Gallery has a unique
opportunity to engage the college community and
the greater community at large in a healthy
dialog of the arts in an educational setting. To
that end, I strive to present a variety of
exhibitions on all artistic levels that include
the middle schools, high schools, college
students, local arts and crafts groups as well
as museum quality shows. Through this variety,
it is my goal to embrace, interest, stimulate
and educate.
Larry Hurst was born in Missouri and spent his
childhood in Alaska and Arizona, settling in
California in 1963. His interest in art was
always preeminent and he graduated from
Chouinard Art Institute (soon to become Cal
Arts) in 1971. While still in college he worked
at Cirrus Editions as a master printer, focusing
on the work of Ed Ruscha.
Working in compositions of intense color and
order, his work reflects the fundamental
elements and principals of art, emphasizing
color, balance and composition. Although
influenced by real events and images, his work
is considered nonobjective abstraction. Pursuing
a career in fine arts, Mr. Hurst has had gallery
exhibitions in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago,
San Francisco and San Diego. He has been
represented in Los Angeles by: Space, Adrienne
Simard, Roy Boyd, Jan Baum, Janus, Simard-Halm,
Koplin, and Lora Schlesinger.
His works can be found in many corporate
collections including, Hyatt Hotels, Bank of
America, Harrahs Corporation, Hallmark Cards,
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, UCLA Medical Plaza,
Scripps Institute, IBM Corporation, Southern
California Gas Company, Peabody Hotels, Mobil
Oil, Munger, Tolles & Olson, The Weisman Family
Foundation, Morrison & Forrester, Princess
Enterprises and numerous private collections.
Public institutions exhibiting his work have
included; Newport Harbor Art Museum, Los Angeles
County Museum of Art, Oceanside Museum, Pasadena
City College, Arco Center for the Visual Art,
Kellogg University Art Gallery, Cirrus Gallery,
and the Municipal Art Gallery, among others.
He was the owner/operator of a fine arts
installation business from 1976 to 1997, serving
a variety of public and private clients
nationwide. During this time he served as a
member of The Cedars-Sinai Medical Center
Advisory Council for the Arts (1976-1999) and
Chair, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Advisory
Council for the Arts (1993-1997). Mr. Hurst came
to College of the Canyons in the spring of 1997.
Initially hired as an Instructional Lab
Technician/Gallery Preparator (1997-2007), he
has served as an adjunct instructor for the Art
Department with assignments including: 2D
Design, 3D Design, and Open Art Labs (Life
Drawing, Printmaking, 3-D Design and Painting,
1999-2007). In the fall of 2007 he became the
Director of the COC Art Gallery and has mounted
33 exhibitions since that time (2007-2011).
