Hans
Burkhardt (1904 – 1994) immigrated to New York from
Switzerland in 1924 and became associated with what was to
become The New York School and the birth of Abstract
Expressionism. By 1937 he had moved to Los Angeles, thus
creating a bridge between New York and Los Angeles. Burkhardt’s contribution to the advancement of modern art in
Los Angeles cannot be denied and is only now being fully
recognized.
