John Wissmath begins his sixth season at the helm of the College of the Canyons softball program and has amassed a 115-65-2 record. As the Cougar softball leader he has led the team to three conference championships in 2009, 2010 and 2012. Wissmath had his best season-to-date in 2012 as the Cougars won a state-best 42 games and were named the No. 1 seed in the Southern California playoffs. He joined Canyons after 20-year former head coach Ray Whitten retired after the 2007 season. Wissmath served as head coach at Butte College in Oroville, Calif., for 12 years where he amassed more than 250 wins. During his last six seasons, he led the Roadrunners to six straight post-season appearances. The Bieber, Calif., native was a two-time All-American decathlete at California State University, Chico after two years at Shasta College in northern California. Though he succeeded on the track, his true love is softball, which he played since high school. Wissmath has competed in national competitions as a pitcher in men’s fastpitch leagues across the United States and brings more than 25 years of experience. A graduate of Chico State, Wissmath received his bachelor’s in physical education and is in the process of earning his master’s. He and his wife, Nicole, have two children, Savanna, and son, Easton. |
