After breaking his ankle last season, Brian Charnock has entered the Cougars lineup with a vengeance. Charnock leads the team in batting average (.482), on base percentage (.516), triples (4) and is on a team-high 16-game hitting streak.

Age: 20.
Siblings:
Five siblings, my stepbrother is Kevin Millar from the Orioles.
Major:
Psychology.
When did you start playing baseball?
Junior in high school, before that I played basketball.
What interested you in playing baseball?
My stepfather and stepbrother got me interested and my stepbrother plays in the major leagues.
Why did you decide to play for COC?
Coach Cota called me and had me lined up. I had only played one year of varsity in high school.
Are you planning on transferring to another school? Which one?
I want to transfer, but I might stay longer to get back the year I lost when I broke my ankle.
What are your plans for the future? Career?
My dream is to play in the major leagues.
What are you most passionate about?
Baseball, that’s an easy one.
Who is your favorite baseball player?
Kevin Millar.
What is your favorite baseball team?
Yankees.
Who do you admire most and why?
My stepfather because he motivated me to keep playing baseball even through all my injuries. He also promised he’d get me into the major leagues. What is your favorite sports movie? Space Jam.
If you could save only one possession from your house in a fire, what would it be and why? Family pictures.
Where is your favorite place to vacation?
Hawaii, the Big Island.
Describe yourself in one word.
Passionate.
Besides baseball, what takes up most of your time?
I watch a lot of movies.
What other sports do you like to participate in?
Basketball and tennis.
What is one thing not many people know about you?
I like country music – Kenny Chesney.

 

 

Two-sport athlete Sarah Hasenfus doesn't have much time off the field, but when she does, her second love is plants. The first-team soccer all-conference player now uses her athleticisim to help the softball team as an infielder. Hasenfus leads the team in on base percentage (.451) and is second on the team with 11 stolen bases.

1 Minute with Sarah

Age: 20.
Siblings: Brother who is 19 and 16-year-old sister.
Major: Botany or environmental studies.
When did you start playing soccer? I’ve played soccer since I was 5. I played AYSO, high school, and now college.
When did you start playing softball? I started softball when I was about 12. I played in minor leagues, travel ball and now college.
What interested you in playing soccer and softball? My parents are both outgoing and athletic, so I was raised to love the outdoors. We would go camping and my parents didn’t care if we would get dirty, so I was raised in an athletic atmosphere. I started playing softball because soccer was in the fall and I didn’t have anything during spring.
What is a goal you would like to achieve this year? Not getting injured and staying healthy. Having a positive outcome for softball.
What are your strengths? For sports, I keep a positive attitude and try to pump the girls up no matter what. I’m artsy. What are your weaknesses? I get down on myself too hard when I make an error because I know I could have done better. What made you decide to play for COC? I wanted to get away from high school and start fresh. I heard it was a really nice school and I liked the girls and the coaches were cool. I’m a big Cougar fan.
Is there a college you are planning on transferring to? A school that has my major and a school that i can get a scholarship to play at - Chico, Cal Poly.
Career goals: Engineering, making new plants would be pretty cool. I want a good environment for the future. It bothers me when I see people throw trash on the floor five feet from a trash can.
What are you most passionate about? Playing sports and planting. Saving the environment.
One thing you want to do before you die: To fulfill my dreams. I want to have a family and see them grow.
Who do you admire most and why? My parents. Famous people come and go, but family is always there. My parents were cool and strict, so there was a good balance. I take sign language classes with my mom here.
What are some of your hobbies? Planting and I love snowboarding.
What is something that not a lot of people know about you? I’m a pretty open person. People may not know that I’m ambidextrous.
Accomplishments you are most proud of? I was homecoming queen in high school. I was also First Annual Queen of Canoga Park Memorial Annual Parade.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Still playing softball hopefully, participating in sports in general. Working with my major as a job. It all depends though, you never know what the future holds.
