SANTA CLARITA, Calif. –Following a successful regular season on the baseball diamond, College of the Canyons earned a No. 8 seed and will host No. 9 Saddleback College in the opening round of the California Community College Athletic Association Southern California Regional Playoffs in a best-of-three series.

College of the Canyons is coming off its second consecutive Western State Conference, South Division championship. It is the second time under head coach Chris Cota that the Cougars have won back-to-back conference crowns — Cota also led the program to titles in 2003 and 2004.

COC finished the 2009 regular season at 25-16-1 overall and posted a 20-8 conference record after a tough start that included an early seven-game losing streak. COC bounced back in conference play as the team hit its midseason stride.

The Cougars are one of five Western State Conference teams to earn a playoff bid — Cuesta (29-14) is the top-seeded WSC team with the No. 3 spot, Allan Hancock (22-20) is seeded at No. 13, Ventura (26-16) comes in at No. 15 and Citrus (24-16) has the No. 17 spot.

Orange Empire member Saddleback College (27-17, 15-9) finished in fourth place in its conference behind Cypress, Orange Coast and Santa Ana, all of which recorded identical 17-7 records in conference action.

The first playoff game will be held on Friday, May 8 at 2 p.m. Game 2 is slated to begin Saturday, May 9 at 11 a.m. Game 3, if necessary, will begin 30 minutes following Game 2. Tickets can be purchased at the gate and are $8 for adults and $5 for children.

The winner of the COC/Saddleback match-up will advance to the Southern California Super Regionals, set for May 15-17 and hosted by the two remaining top-seeded teams.
