 SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – The College of the Canyons baseball team had seven players named All-Western State Conference, South Division, including four athletes — Hugo Hernandez, Cal Vogelsang, Nico Moreno and Tyler Pugmire — who earned first-team accolades.
First baseman Hernandez was a unanimous pick after earning second-team honors in 2009. The Bishop Alemany High of Mission Hills graduate was 10th in the conference with a .410 batting average, fourth with 26 RBIs, third with 10 doubles and tied for fourth with five home runs.
Freshman right fielder Cal Vogelsang was a unanimous selection. The West Ranch alum was in the top-20 with a .380 batting average and posted a conference-best eight home runs.
Moreno, a sophomore second baseman, led the WSC with 11 doubles and was second on the team in batting average (.395).
Designated hitter Pugmire topped the team with a .451 batting average during the 14 WSC games in which he played. In 51 at-bats during the conference season, the freshman delivered 23 hits, five doubles and 15 RBIs.
Hernandez and Moreno also earned the Western State Conference, South Division, Gold Glove award in their respective positions.
The Cougars closed out the season with an overall record of 18-16 and posted a 12-9 conference mark, good for fourth place.
