SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Two members of the 2011 College of the Canyons baseball team and one former Cougar were called in the three-day 2011 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft earlier this week. Shortstop Juan Perez was picked up by the Cincinnati Reds as the 805th pick in the 26th round, pitcher David Haerle was taken as the 1180th player in the 39th round by the Housto Astros and former COC third baseman Brian Hernandez was tabbed the 825th pick of the draft in the 27th round by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

4-5-11 COC Gives Up Five Runs in Sixth Inning

The College of the Canyons baseball team gave up five runs on three hits on Tuesday afternoon to fall to Glendale College 12-7 in a Western State Conference match up. COC took an early 4-0 lead after a fourth inning that saw Jake Jelmini hit a double with bases loaded to clear the runners. Michael Browne hit into a RBI sacrifice to bring in Jelmini to score the final run of the inning. In the top of the sixth inning, the Canyons' pitchers threw back-to-back walks that each scored a Glendale runner, followed by a passed ball that brought in run, coupled with three hits to help Glendale take a 8-4 lead. COC responded with two runs of its own in the seventh, but Glendale kept adding runs, which became too much for COC to overcome. First baseman Jelmini was 2-of-3 with 3 RBIs. On the mound, Troy Neiman was tagged with the loss after going four innings with four runs and four hits and three strikeouts. Canyons will travel to Glendale College for a 2:30 p.m. game on Thursday, April 7.
3-26-11 Canyons Holds Off Late Mission Surge

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - College of the Canyons baseball team held off a visiting Mission team that rallied in the final two innings of Saturday's game to beat the Eagles 2-1. Mission scored one run in the top of the eighth to come within one run of the Cougars who led 2-1. After pitching eight strong innings, Troy Neiman was given a rest and Kameron Krise was put in for the final inning. Krise gave up a single to his first batter, struck out his second, but an error by the defense put two runners on base. Canyons made up for the miscue in the following sequence, catching a fleeing Mission player who tried to steal third but was caught by the COC defense. Krise would retire the following batter, and COC would hold on to the win. Neiman gave up three hits, one run and struck out six in his eight innings of work. Shortstop Juan Perez was 1-of-3 on the afternoon and collected three RBI. Canyons will travel to Mission on Tuesday, April 29 for a 2:30 PM game.
3-22-11 Cougars Post Big Inning To Garner Win Over West L.A.

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - For the second game in a row, College of the Canyons baseball team had a huge inning to help them move past West L.A. College, 8-2, on Saturday afternoon at Cougar Field. Canyons had six runs on six hits in the bottom of the second inning to
put the game away for COC. A coupling of singles from Tommy Ferndino and Jeremy and Weber helped to start the run for COC. Mitchell Thompson turned in the first hit that brought in Weber. Michael Browne added his own single to load the bases. Robbie Mousselli garnered a sacrifice to bring in Piper and Juan Perez singled and Cal Vogelsang hit a double to bring in the rest of the runs. Vogelsang was 1-for-3 with two RBI and Browne had a homerun in the game. John Salas pitched a complete game and gave up six hits and struck out nine batters. COC will travel to West L.A. on Thursday March 24 for a 2:30 p.m. game.
3-19-11 Canyons Breaks Losing Streak With Win Over Valley

College of the Canyons baseball team added six runs on three hits in the bottom of the seventh inning on Saturday afternoon to defeat Valley 8-2 and end a four-game losing streak. The Cougars and Monarchs were tied 2-2 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, but poor pitching by Valley helped Canyons pull away. After Kamran Young was able to help load the bases with his walk, third baseman Robbie Mousselli was hit by Valley's starting pitcher Chase Munoz, which brought in a COC run that broke the tie. With the bases still loaded, Juan Perez hit a two RBI double to right field leaving two runners on base. Vogelsang came up to bat and was the second hitter in the inning to be hit by a ball to occupy the bases for the third time in the inning. Valley changed pitchers, but the runs kept coming in for COC. Tommy Ferndino singled to right to bring in Mousselli and Perez and Jeremy Weber added a sacrifice to score Vogelsang. Weber led the Cougars with three RBI and three other players had two RBI. Canyons will host West L.A. on Tuesday, March 22 at 2:30 p.m.
3-8-11 Cougars Win Conference Home Opener Against Mission College

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - College of the Canyons baseball team put up a three-run eighth inning on Tuesday afternoon to overcome a 5-4 deficit in its conference home opener against Mission College to win 7-5. Canyons took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning on Kamran Young's two-run double down the right line that scored Michael Browne and Robbie Mousselli. The lead lasted until the eighth inning as Mission scored three runs on three hits in the top of the inning to take a 5-4 lead. The Cougars started the bottom of the eighth with Young garnering a walk on Mission’s relief pitcher Chris Mott. Kasey Toven singled to right field to bring in Nathan Enriquez who came in to run for Young to tie up the game 5-5. The Cougars loaded the bases after a handful of Mission miscues, which led to two more runs coming in on an error and a pitch that hit Mousselli, giving the Cougars a 7-5 lead. Relief pitcher Andy Arriaga came finished off the top of the ninth inning by holding the Eagles hitless and striking out two batters in his first win of the season. Toven was 2-of-3 with a double and RBI, and Mousselli and Young had two RBI apiece. Starting pitcher John Salas went 7 1/3 innings and gave up eight hits, four runs (three earned), and struck out six batters.
3-1-11 Canyons Wins Against Allan Hancock

The College of the Canyons baseball team escaped a jam in the ninth to hold off Allan Hancock 3-2 on the road in Santa Maria on Tuesday afternoon. Canyons carried a 3-1 lead into the eighth inning and turned the game over to sophomore left-hander Steve Messner, but saw the Bulldogs put four runners on base. Messner's defense retired the first two batters of the inning, but two walks and a pitch that hit the Bulldogs' batter to load the bases for AHC followed it. With the bases loaded, Messner walked one more runner to score the player on third. Canyons brought in Andy Arriaga to pitch for Messner and helped COC get the final out. Canyons starter John Salas (2-0) went seven strong innings for his second win of the year. He allowed one run and six hits with one walk and six strikeouts. Freshman right-hander David Haerle came on in relief in the eighth and did some quality control to hold the two-run lead. Center fielder Nathan Enriquez led COC from the plate, going 2-of-3, and second baseman Kasey Toven collected a team high two RBI. COC will host Allan Hancock on Thursday, March 3 at 2 p.m.
2-28-11 COC Breaks Orange Coast 14-Game Win Streak With 11-6 Victory

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - College of the Canyons sophomore center fielder Jeremy Weber had four hits and drove in two runs, leading the Cougars to an 11-6 win over previously unbeaten Orange Coast College on Sunday afternoon. Weber received help from sophomore shortstop Juan Perez who was 2-of-3 with three RBI and freshman designated hitter Tommy Ferndino who was 3-of-4 with two RBI. Weber, Perez and Ferndino's big days provided enough run support for COC sophomore right-hander Cory Jones and sophomore right-hander Kameron Krise, who combined for eight strikeouts on the mound. Jones (2-1), who made his fourth start, pitched into the sixth inning and allowed three runs and three hits with four strikeouts and five walks. Krise worked the final 2 1/3 innings for his first save of the season. After a 3-3 tie coming out of the first inning, the Cougars broke the standstill in the bottom of the third to take a 5-3 lead. With two outs freshman first baseman Jake Jelmini hit one out of the park and over the right field fence to bring in Ferndino who had before Jelmini stepped to the plate. COC added to its lead with one run in the fourth and two in the sixth to take an 8-3 lead into the seventh stanza. After some pitching problems for the Cougars in the seventh and the lead was dwindled down to three run, 8-5, COC brought in Krise to pitch. The righty gave up three hits and one run, and retired four batters, while COC's bats put up three more runs in the final two innings. COC will play against Allan Hancock on Tuesday, March 1 in Santa Maria.
2-24-11 Cougars Lose 3-0 Lead Against Orange Coast

The College of the Canyons baseball team gave up a 3-0 lead that they had held going into the bottom of the fifth inning against No. 6 Orange Coast College on Thursday afternoon to end up losing 7-3 to the home team. Sophomore center fielder Jeremy Weber hit a solo home run for the Cougars and went 2-for-4 with one RBI in the loss. The Pirates (14-0) erased a three-run deficit by scoring three runs in the fifth inning, two in the sixth and two more in the seventh. Orange Coast used steady hitting to move past the Cougars an increase its win streak to 14 straight. Pending the weather, COC will play host to Orange Coast on Saturday at noon.
2-13-11 Vogelsang's Five RBI Lift Cougars Past L.A. Harbor

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - The College of the Canyons baseball team scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to put a dagger in visiting L.A. Harbor en route to a 8-4 win over the Seahawks on Saturday afternoon. Canyons (4-2) scored the three runs on three hits in the final game of the Western State Conference Tourney. The Cougars trailed 3-0 entering the bottom of the first inning when sophomore right fielder Cal Vogelsang hit a three-run homer that tied up the score. COC added another run in the third, with the help of Volgelsang's one-run single for his fourth RBI of the afternoon and to give COC a 4-3 lead. Second baseman Juan Perez added an RBI of his own in the fifth inning on a double that drove in Jeremy Weber who had started off the inning with a single. Canyons turned in three more runs in the seventh to insure the COC victory. Canyons sophomore left-hander Steven Messner (1-0) had the start and win for COC with five innings of work. Messner gave up four hits, four runs and struck out five batters. Vogelsang was 2-for-2 with five RBIs. COC will travel to Oxnard on Friday, Feb. 18 at 12:30 p.m. for another non-conference game.
2-12-11 Cougars Post Four Errors In Loss

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - The sixth inning proved to be the difference Friday afternoon at Cougar Field as East L.A. rallied for a 4-3 win over College of the Canyons. After COC wriggled out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the fifth inning, East L.A. scored three runs on two hits in the next frame to take a 4-3 lead, which ended up being enough to win the game. The fifth inning, coupled with four COC errors also played a big role in the Cougars first home loss of the year. Pitcher Cory Jones gave COC a quality start with five innings on the mound, allowing five hits, one run and striking out two. Second baseman Juan Perez was the bright spot in the COC loss going 3-of-4 with a RBI. East L.A. out-hit Canyons 9-7 in the loss, and left seven batters on base.
They return to action tomorrow to take on L.A. Harbor at noon.
2-10-11 COC Wins Game Behind Bats In Fifth Inning

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - The College of the Canyons baseball team scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and two relief pitchers held Cerritos scoreless over the final two innings, as the Cougars posted a 7-3 victory over the Falcons Thursday afternoon.
Designated hitter Tommy Ferndino started off COC in the bottom of the fifth with a one-run double to right center to give COC a 4-1 lead. Following some pitching problems for Cerritos, COC's catcher Michael Browne and shortstop Kasey Toven added one-run singles to add COC's find three runs of the game. The COC bullpen took over from there as they held the Falcons to one hit in the final two innings. Starting pitcher Troy Neiman allowed two runs with six strikeouts in seven innings of work. Reliever CJ MIllar pitched a scoreless eighth inning and retired two of the three batters he faced and David Haerle cleaned up the ninth with one strikeout. COC will host East L.A. tomorrow at 2 p.m.
