College of the Canyons vs Bakersfield College
2005 Semi-Final Playoff Round
11-26-05
Final Score: College of the Canyons 48, Bakersfield College 26
Santa Clarita, CA- With the Cougars trailing by six points in the fourth quarter, Marcel Marquez found Billy Omahen for the game-winning touchdown pass with 1:06 left in the game to escape with a 24-23 win.
That was October 1, when the Cougars and Renegades played at Bakersfield.
This time, with the Cougars trailing by five points in the fourth quarter, Marquez didn't take nearly as long - just 0:23 seconds into the quarter, actually - to give the Cougars the lead when he hit Terence Scott on a 55-yard touchdown pass to put College of the Canyons up 27-26. The Cougars would eventually score 27 unanswered points to pull away in the fourth quarter in a hard-fought game against Bakersfield College.
The win means the College of the Canyons will host its firsrt Southern California Championship game against a familiar foe - Grossmont College, who came from behind to defeat El Camino College 52-43 in the other Semi-final game.
With more than 3,000 fans in attendance, the two teams fought through cold and windy weather in an effort to sustain momentum. It was the Cougars who took the momentum into halftime. On a fourth and long play on the Bakersfield 29-yard line and trailing 10-7, the Cougars opted to go for the touchdown. And Marcel Marquez, in an amazing play, found Shane Morales for the score, but in an incredible fashion. Marquez broke two tackles - one where the defender had both hands around Marquez - almost fell to the ground, scrambled to his left, broke away from another defender, and lofted a pass back to his right to Morales, who was all alone on the 2-yard line. Morales easily stepped in for the score with just 1:17 left in the first half.
As if that wasn't bad enough, the Cougars held Bakersfield to three-and-out on their next drive, and Ja'Vonte Holmes returned a punt 53 yards back to the Renegade 7-yard line with 0:12 seconds left. Marquez then hit Cary Dove on a fade pattern in the corner for a touchdown that sent the Canyons' crown roaring and the teams to the locker room with COC leading 21-10.
Bakersfield came out blazing, though. The Renegades shut down and shut out the Cougars in the third quarter and put up 10 points on a J.R. Rogers 3-yard touchdown run and Jose Martinez field goal. Bakersfield took the lead when Thomas Peregrin hit Tyreece Lee on a 10-yard score early in the fourth, but the attempted 2-pt try failed, and Bakersfield led 26-21.
But the fourth quarter was all Cougars. After the Marquez-to-Scott score to regain the lead, the Cougar defense once again kicked into overdrive, sacking Peregrin twice and stifling the run game. Bakersfield College was held to just 12 net yards rushing on the night. The Cougars, in the meantime, would tack on scoring touchdown runs of 6, 3 and 13 from Marquez, Sean Edwards and Vince Patterson to put the game on ice.
Marcel Marquez finished the night 11-of-30 for 4 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. He also carried the ball 15 times for 131 yards and 1 score. Morales and Scott each had 61 yards receiving and 1 score. Edwards had a nice night on the ground, rushing 8 times for 63 yards and a score.
Joey La Rocque was the leader on defense, racking up 12 tackles (8 unassisted) with 3 tackles for loss, 1 pass break-up, a forced fumble and one-half sack. Ja'Vonte Holmes had 3 pass break-ups, a fumble recovery and an interception. He also returned 2 punts for 57 yards, including the key 53-yard return late in the first half, and 1 kick off for 24 yards. Shaiphen Lewis, Jonathan Celestine and David Gross each had sacks, and Josh Cordray assisted on the sack with La Rocque.
With the win, the College of the Canyons Cougars will host the Southern California Championship game on December 3, at 7 p.m. This will be the Cougars third trip to the game in the past four seasons, but the first time the game has been held at Cougar Stadium.
The win extends the Cougars' win streak to 26 straight, and the Cougars' home win streak to 30 straight.
