Santa Clarita, CA- Four different Cougars scored rushing touchdowns and Marcel Marquez threw for 225 yards and 2 touchdowns in just under two quarters as College of the Canyons defeated the visiting Monarchs 51-0. It was the first shutout for the Cougars and the team's largest margin of victory this season.
With the Cougars up 3-0 in the first quarter, Shaiphan Lewis stepped in front of a Corey Jones pass and took the ball in for the score from 16 yards out to put College of the Canyons up 10-0. The Cougars then opened up the scoring in the second quarter. Marquez hit Sean Edwards and Terence Scott on scores of 26 and 37, and Brandon Clayton and Vince Patterson added touchdowns on runs of 2 and 8, respectively, to give the Cougars a 37-0 halftime lead.
With Marquez gone in the second half, Cary Dove led the offense on scoring drives in the 3rd and 4th quarters. The third quarter drive ended with a Brian Stuart 2-yard touchdown run, while Dove took it in himself in the fourth quarter.
The Cougar defense held the Valley run game to a net zero yards on the night and wreaked havoc on the Monarch quarterbacks. The pair of Valley throwers were sacked six times, intercepted five times and were held to just 39 yards passing. The 39 yards of total offensive yardage allowed by the Cougar defense is a new school record for fewest total offensive yards allowed.
Allen Walker led the defense with 7 tackles, 6 unassisted, with a tackle for loss and pass break-up. Shaiphan Lewis added 6 tackles, 2 for loss, and returned an interception 16 yards for a score. Marcus Mercer had a tackle, an interception and a sack.
Lineman Scott Moore, who is also the starting center the College of the Canyons basketball team, played for the Cougars in the afternoon, and picked up 12 points, 5 blocked shots and 8 rebounds, then suited up against Valley that night and picked up 2 tackles, 1 for loss.
