Santa Clarita, CA-Wide receiver Terence Scott had his best night as a Cougar, pulling down six catches for 183 yards and 1 touchdown and quarterback Marcel Marquez threw for two scores and ran for another as #1 College of the Canyons beat #8 Chaffey College 37-10 in the WSC Bowl and first round of the Southern California playoffs.
Scott, who has 40 receptions for 865 yards and 7 touchdowns, pulled down a 52-yard touchdown pass from Marquez on the Cougar’s first play from scrimmage just 1:27 into the game. Marquez also hit Steve Silva in the first quarter with a 3-yard pass over the middle, and scored on a 5-yard run in the second quarter to give the Cougars a 20-0 lead. Marquez finished the night 14-for-26 for 265 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions. He also carried the ball 15 times for 65 yards and 1 score.
Chaffey closed the gap to 10 points on a field goal and a Casey Hansen-to-Augustine Osuala touchdown pass in the second quarter. But College of the Canyons responded at the end of the first half with a long drive and eventual 1-yard Brian Stuart touchdown run. Stuart, who got the start at running back, also scored on a 24-yard run in the third quarter and picked up a career-best 100 yards rushing.
The College of the Canyons defense had 5 sacks on Casey Hansen to disrupt the Panther passing game, and allowed only 58 yards rushing. Panther Bernard Payton, one of the top running backs in the state with 1,208 yards rushing entering the game, was held to 45 yards on 16 carries.
Michael Carr led the defense with 5 tackles, all unassisted, and 1 pass break-up. Joey La Rocque had 4 tackles and 1 pass break-up and Justin Tryon had 4 tackles, 1 interception and 1 pass break-up. Shaiphen Lewis, Gary Cox, Steve Cenatus, David Gross and Chad Landry all recorded sacks.
The win propels the Cougars to a playoff semi-final match-up with #4 Bakersfield College, who beat #5 Fullerton College 54-20 in the Golden Empire Bowl. College of the Canyons beat Bakersfield College 24-23 earlier in the season at Bakersfield on a Marcel Marquez-to-Billy Omahen touchdown pass with just more than 1 minute left in the game.

Three northbound lanes and four southbound lanes remain open to motorists.
