COC Set To Host Season Home Opener

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Garett Tujague and his College of the Canyons Cougars enter tonight’s contest as the No. 3 team according to California Community College Athletics Association and the California Football Coaches Association Weekly Poll. COC is hosting American Division, Pacific Conference team Santa Barbara City in both team’s second non-conference game of the year.
The College of the Canyons football team overcame first-game jitters last Saturday, after the Antelope Valley Marauders returned the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown. Following the special teams blunder, COC settled down and scored 47 consectutive points before the Marauders could get into the end zone again. Wide receiver Hayo Carpenter had three touchdowns on the night and collected 288 all-purpose yards, the third best performance by any football player in the state last weekend. Carpenter led the receivers with eight catches for 182 yards and two scores, as well as four punt returns for 106 yards and one touchdown. Winborn led all running backs with 17 carries for 127 yards and one touchdown. Quarterbacks Brad McClellan and Joey Frias were interception free on the evening after sharing the passing duties. McClellan was 13-of-20 for 170 yards and one touchdown, while Frias was 4-of-8 for 61 yards and a score. Both play callers added a rushing touchdown of their own as well. Josh Gibbs tallied the lone interception of the games along with two tackles and linebacker Steve Gourley led the defense with seven tackles (six solo) and a forced fumble. COC handedly defeated the No. 20 Marauders with 501 yards of total offense (270 rushing and 231 passing), while the defense only gave up 150 offensive yards and 10 first downs in 60 minutes.
The Santa Barbara City College Vaqueros narrowly lost to National Division, Northern Conference team Allan Hancock last week, 14-10. The Vaqueros jumped ahead 10-0 in the first seven minutes on a field goal and a punt return for a touchdown. But, Allan Hancock, which outrushed the Vaqueros 345-62, took a 14-10 lead on a 25-yard touchdown run by quarterback Eric Anderkavich with 11:57 to go in the third quarter. SBCC had a chance to pull out the victory, following a shanked Hancock punt that went just 5 yards. The Vaqueros took over on the Hancock 40 with 1:20 to play and reached the 7-yard line on a 21-yard pass from Conner Rehage to Austen Lott. With 17 seconds showing and no timeouts left, Rehage spiked the ball on first down. His second down aerial was dropped in the end zone and his last two passes were both high off the mark. Rehage completed 15-of-34 passes for 125 yards with one interception. Justin Leverette rushed for 65 yards and Wilkerson caught five passes for 27 yards.
