SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - The College of the Canyons football team gained 337 yards of total offense, but was held to only 11 yards rushing, as the Cougars lost their final conference game of the season to Bakersfield, 45-35.

The Cougars held the Renegades to only two touchdowns in the first half, but gave up 31 points in the second half, and allowed 200 yards passing and 128 yards rushing in the contest.

The COC offense was unbalanced as they notched 20 rushing attempts for 11 yards, but saw quarterback Chris Rini throw for 326 yards.

The COC offense didn't score until the second quarter, with a six-play, 80-yard drive that was capped off with a 37-yard Rini touchdown pass to wide receiver Vincent Neilson. The two players were able to hook up again, as Rini threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Neilson with 32 seconds left before the half.

The Cougars went into halftime tied 14-14, but quickly lost the lead in the third quarter, when the Renegades scored an offense touchdown, and returned an interception for a score.

However, the COC offense was able to respond with two touchdowns of its own right before the end of the third quarter.

Trailing 28-14 in the third quarter, Rini threw a pass to sophomore wide receiver Frankie Maddero for a 7-yard TD. Bakersfield would fumble away the ensuing kickoff return, setting up the Cougars for a 4-yard carry into the end zone.

The Cougars and Renegades went into the fourth quarter all knotted up at 28-28, but then COC was outscored 17-7 in the fourth quarter and Rini threw his second pick of the game, which was run into the end zone for a score, and that sealed the victory for Bakersfield.

The Cougars' loss marked the third straight loss against Bakersfield, dating back to 2009.

Rini was 26-of-57 for 326 yards and four scores, but threw two interceptions.

Neilson had five catches for 91 yards and two touchdowns and sophomore wide receivers Jerrell Jordan and Madero each had a score.

Sophomore safety Curtis McCann led the team with eight tackles, while freshman linebacker Jordan Stanton had six tackles and a sack. Sophomore linebacker Omari Williams also recorded two sacks.
