The Cougars opened their 2004 season with a solid performance against PCC, boosting the Cougars in the JCGridwire national rankings from No. 4 to No. 3. COC continued their record of perfect record during home openers, improving to 7-0.

The Cougar defense stepped up tremendously against 19th ranked Palomar College. COC held them to 15 yards rushing and 130 yards receiving. Joey La Rocque led the defense with 6 unassisted tackles and 2 ½ sacks.

The Cougars proved that its offense was one of the best in the state, scoring 21 points in both the first and fourth quarter. Smith broke a school record with 13 receptions in a game. Smith also had his third 100+ yard game in a row. Tomi Halai, who had 6 tackles, led the defense 5 unassisted, as Pierce was held to only 20 yards rushing.

The Cougars recorded their first shutout of the year as they held Hancock to 238 yards in total offensive yardage in 63 plays. Joey LaRocque had 8 tackles in the game, 4 unassisted. Kicker Jason Thompkins had a perfect game, 6-for-6 on extra point conversions and 3-for-3 on field goals, for 15 points in the game. The Cougars improved their record to 4-0.

For the second game in a row, the Cougars held their opponent to zero points on the scoreboard. Santa Barbara held COC to 94 yards rushing and most of the yardage was gained by COC’s passing game as the team gained 335 yards. Jason Thompkins broke a school record with a 52 yard field goal with 4:50 left to go in the first quarter for the longest field goal in a game.

In one of the closer games for the Cougars, the Cougars did not get a sizeable lead over Compton until the third quarter. Quarterback Corey Miles completed 14 passes in a row during the second and third quarters to bring the score to 33-14 with one quarter left in the game. The Cougars scored one touchdown and a field goal in the fourth to seal the game 43-26.

The Cougars were in an unfamiliar position, trailing Valley, but the team was able to fight back. In the third and fourth quarter the two teams exchanged the lead until Will Caldwell was able to score a touchdown on a three yard run with 6:17 left in the game, that the Cougars were able to take the lead for good.

The Cougars won their 25th consecutive home game in a night of record-breaking performances. The defense held Ventura to six yards rushing and 191 total offensive yardage compared to the Cougars 410 yards. Smith set a school record with the most receptions in a season when he had his 60th reception during the second quarter. Jerrod Perry added 10 tackles, 8 unassisted.

Receiving: 5 receptions, 60 yards

As COC’s offense struggled, the defense stepped up to help the Cougars seal the win over Bakersfield. Dennis Ellis led the team with 13 tackles, all unassisted. Bakersfield was held to only 139 offensive yards and crossed the midfield mark once during the game.

With a win over Moorpark College, the Cougars improved their season record to 10-0 and won their fifth consecutive WSC Championship! Jerrod Perry tallied nine tackles, 7 unassisted, while holding Moorpark to only 15 yards rushing.

In the 2004 WSC Bowl, the Cougars had a rough battle against visiting El Camino College. The defense helped win the game for COC, with Dennis Ellis leading the way with 8 unassisted tackles and 4 sacks.

Grossmont, who also held a perfect record of 11-0 was shut out of the contest and could never rally to put points up on the scoreboard. The Cougars avenged last year’s early exit out of the playoffs when the Cougars lost to Grossmont 14-10 in the Southern California Championship. A Michael Carr 31-yard interception return for a touchdown in the third quarter seals the victory.

COC comes out cold with Saddleback scoring a touchdown and a field goal to take a quick 10-0 lead. The Cougars were not going to be easily defeated. Cougar defense steps up once again and makes Saddleback turn predominately to their passing game while only allowing 29 yards total rushing. College of the Canyons takes control in the second half, scoring 24 straight points, and never looks back. Dennis Ellis had 12 tackles, eight unassisted, and 2 ½ sacks.

COC puts 19 points early on San Francisco then holds back a furious Ram attack in the fourth quarter, as the Cougars win their 14th straight game and capture the State and National titles in just its 7th season since College of the Canyons reinstated football the school.
