It only took 14 seconds for the Cougars to open up their 2005 season the same way they ended the 2004 season. New starting quarterback Marcel Marquez hit Terence Scott for an 80-yard pass to score the first points of the game. Chaffey was never able to recover and was held to only 11 first downs. The defensive line made the difference in the game, scoring two touchdowns. Cornerback Ja'Vonte Holmes intercepted a pass and returned it 53 yards for a touchdown and a 20-0 halftime lead. Lineman Brian Wilson stripped the Chaffey quarterback of the ball in the fourth quarter, and linebacker Joey La Rocque recovered it for the defense's second touchdown of the game. Michael Carr led the defense with six tackles and a pass break-up.

The Cougars improved their home opener record to 8-0 as quarterback Marcel Marquez could not be contained by Grossmont’s defense when he scored two rushing touchdowns and tallied another one with a pass to wide receiver Shane Smith. COC was held scoreless at the end of the third quarter and whole fourth quarter as Grossmont went on to score 15 consecutive points. But, the late game surge was not enough for the Griffins to overcome COC. Running back Brandon Clayton tied a school record for carries in a game with 28.

Passing: Marquez 13-for-26 for 211 yards and four touchdowns
Receiving: Garrett Six receptions for 88 yards and one touchdown
In the first conference game of the season, Marcel Marquez threw four touchdown passes to four different receivers and added 45 rushing yards to help the Cougars overcome a swift 10-0 lead by Ventura. In the span of 14 minutes, over the second and third quarters, COC scored 35 points and held Ventura to zero. The Cougars gained 315 yards on the ground and held Ventura to only 39 yards rushing. Linebacker Joey La Rocque had an outstanding game on defense, racking up 11 tackles, three sacks and one interception. Ja'Vonte Holmes also looked sharp, totaling five tackles and returning a punt 71 yards for a score in the second quarter.

The Cougars went into halftime with a 14-all score only to come out of the break to post 17 unanswered points as the Moorpark Raiders struggled to get back into the game. The defense held the Raiders to only 151 offensive yards while the Cougars totalled 485 yards. Allen Walker scored on a 10-yard interception return with 9:40 left in the game, to seal the win for Canyons. Linebacker Joey La Rocque once again had an outstanding game on defense, collecting nine tackles, seven unassisted, two sacks and one tackle for a loss.

Passing: Marquez 16-for-30 for 223 yards and two touchdowns
Receiving: Scott Four receptions for 79 yards and one touchdown
At halftime Canyons had a comfortable 17-10 lead over Bakersfield, only to watch the Renegades score 16 points in the second half. In the closest game of the season for the Cougars, COC had to come from behind with a minute left. Marcel Marquez hit Billy Omahen on a four-yard TD pass with 1:06 left in the game to take the lead by one point. The Renegades got the ball back with a minute left, but B.T. Walker broke up pass plays on 3rd and 4th down to end the Renegade threat. With the win, the Cougars knocked Bakersfield, who also had a perfect record in conference play, to second place in the WSC North.

In a cross-division game, Citrus jumped to a quick 7-0 lead on a fake field goal, but College of the Canyons responded when on 4th and 11, Marcel Marquez hit Chad Garrett on a 29-yard touchdown pass. The Cougars continued with two consecutive touchdowns to end the half. The team started the second half the same way they ended the first, scoring two more touchdowns. The Owls tried to make a comeback in the fourth quarter, but a 71-yard interception return insured the Cougar win. Troy Nolan led the team defensively with 11 tackles (10 unassisted) and one tackle for a loss.

Receiving: Scott Five receptions for 130 yards and one touchdown
Thirty different Cougar defenders had at least one tackle and eight different players scored touchdowns as Pierce got on the scoreboard once during the whole game. Marcel Marquez threw for 224 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for a third score and was pulled with five minutes left in the second quarter with the Cougars leading 30-7 at that point. Cary Dove would take over as QB for most of the second half, and rushed the ball nine times for 122 yards and one touchdown.

In a tie for first place with Allan Hancock College and with the team boasting the WSC’s leading rusher, Drew Williams, both teams were ready for a battle. During an early play in the second quarter, Williams dislocated his ankle, ending his season and the hopes for a win for Hancock. The Cougars took over the game as Marcel Marquez rushed for his eighth rushing touchdown of the year, a school record for touchdown runs by a quarterback in a season. Michael Carr led the defense with a career high 15 tackles, two pass break-ups and a forced fumble.

College of the Canyons had an early lead before Santa Barbara started to slowly fight back at the end of the first half. COC’s defensive line held Santa Barbara to only 142 offensive yards for the night. Chad Garrett had a career high night with four receptions for 132 yards and two touchdowns. Joey La Rocque led the defense with eight tackles, while Michael Carr had five tackles, one pass break-up and a blocked punt.

Four different Cougars scored rushing touchdowns and Marcel Marquez threw for 225 yards and two touchdowns in just under two quarters as College of the Canyons defeated the visiting Monarchs 51-0. It was the first shutout for the Cougars and the team's largest margin of victory of the season and marked the end of conference play.

In the first round of the playoffs, wide receiver Terence Scott caught seven receptions for 183 yards and a touchdown to help lead the Cougars to the SoCal Semifinals. Chaffey was not able to hold off a Cougar offense that gained 479 offensive yards. COC’s defense held Chaffey to 207 yards. Michael Carr guided the defense with five tackles, all unassisted, and one pass break-up.

The Cougars were in a familiar place with the Renegades as they fell behind by five points in the fourth quarter. Marcel Marquez hit Terence Scott for a 55-yard touchdown to take the lead 27-26. The Cougars went on to score three more touchdowns to ensure the win. Bakersfield College was held to just 12 net yards rushing on the night. The win gave College of the Canyons the opportunity to host its first Southern California Championship game and it extended the Cougars' win streak to 26 straight, and the Cougars' home win streak to 30 straight.

The Cougars fell behind early in the game as Grossmont scored 14 seconds into the game. COC made a run in the fourth quarter, scoring two straight touchdowns, but a failed kick and a pass held the Cougars from a comeback. For the first time in the season, the Cougars had less offensive yardage than their opponent: Grossmont finished with 396 total yards and COC finished with 321 yards. Three players finished with 11 total tackles for Canyons: Troy Nolan, Wes Anderson and Joey La Rocque. The loss ended the Cougars win streak at 26 games.
