For the first time since the football program was reinstated in 1998, the Cougars lost their home opener and snapped a 38-game regular season winning streak with a 29-24 loss to the visiting Chaffey College Panthers. The Panthers stunned the Cougars with the first strike to put the Chaffey on top 7-0. The game came down to time management for Chaffey as the Panthers held on to the ball for the last five minutes of the game and the score in favor of Chaffey, 29-20. A missed opportunity on third and six on the Chaffey 9-yard line, that could only be converted to a field goal, left the final score at 29-23. Four Cougars finished with four tackles each: Byron Bullock, Allen Walker, Kava Fine and Amyene Williams. Walker also added a sack and a pass break-up.

College of the Canyons suffered another loss, 25-3, this time at the hands of defending state champions Grossmont College Griffins, making the 2006 season the worst start to Cougar football since the program was reinstated in 1998. The team also tied for the fewest points scored, a record held since Sept. 8, 2001 against Santa Ana College when the Cougars were defeated 27-3. The Cougars were held scoreless until the fourth quarter and as the team went down by 25 points. A 32-yard field goal by Paul Weinstein with less than five minutes left in the game yielded first and only points from the Cougars.

The Cougars ended a two-game losing streak by shutting out the visiting Ventura College Pirates, 54-0, in the first conference game of the season. COC continued its conference win streak, which began in 2000, with its 44th consecutive Western State Conference win. Unlike the past two games, the Cougars came out with confidence and put the first points up on the board for COC – a field goal from Paul Weinstein. As a team, the Cougars collected 586 total offensive yardage, 304 from rushing and 282
from passing, which came close to the team record of 594 yards that has been held since 1998. The defense, which tallied its first shutout of the year, was led by Amyene Williams with one interception, two pass break-ups and two tackles. Defensive back Paymi Pitts added a fumble recovery, an interception and a pass break-up. As a group, the Cougar defense held Ventura to only nine first downs and 100 offensive yards.

COC was held scoreless in the fourth quarter, after leading for the previous three, against Moorpark College in a 35-28 loss for the Cougars. The loss broke the 44-game conference win streak that began with game six of the 2000 season. The fourth quarter became crucial to both teams with a 28-all score, but COC struggled to get the offense in the end zone. Moorpark scored on a six-yard pass with 9:27 left in the game. But the Cougars failed to convert on the last drive on Moorpark’s nine-yard line. Running
back Brian Stuart finished with a season high 134 yards on 18 carries and Terence Scott broke Tyrell Smith’s record of most receptions in a game with 14, while tallying 172 yards and one touchdown. Wallace Bates led the defense with 11 tackles, nine unassisted, and Byron Bullock had 6.5 tackles and a pass break-up. Walker garnered five tackles, one fumble recovery and two pass break-ups.

Key mistakes in the fourth quarter by the Cougars, led to a breakdown in COC’s defense allowing the Bakersfield Renegades to earn the win, 33- 22. College of the Canyons was only down by one point headed into halftime, 17-16, but succumbed to the Renegades in the final two quarters, posting only one touchdown. As a team, COC was held to only 64 yards rushing and only 269 offensive yards. Darius Clarke led the defense with five tackles, four unassisted, and Steve Cenatus had two sacks and four tackles. Derrick Onwuachi and David Gross both had a sack on the night.

College of the Canyons finally put together a solid performance on both sides of the ball, which led to five different Cougars posting points on the board, in a 43-14 win over the Citrus College Owls. Canyons’ defense picked off four passes, including three from defensive back Amyene Williams and an interception return for a touchdown by Justin Price. The Owls were held to 37 yards rushing and 106 total offensive yardage. Linebacker Wallace Bates led the defense with five tackles, four unassisted, and a sack for a loss of 11 yards. K.T. Thomas had three tackles, two unassisted, and two sacks for a loss of 13 yards.

COC earned its second consecutive weekend win and the first win on the road over the Pierce College Brahmas, 43-14. COC’s offensive specialist, quarterback Andrew Miramontes, threw four touchdowns, including two that found wide receiver Terence Scott, and three other Cougars ran into the end zone to help lead a team that needed a big win. The defense did its part by holding the Brahmas scoreless in the second half, while the offense outscored Pierce 26-0. K.T. Thomas led the defense, which held Pierce to only 89 yards rushing. Thomas garnered seven tackles, four unassisted. Kava Fine added five tackles, three unassisted.

With a 19-13 halftime lead, the Cougars took the field in the second half and watched as the Allan Hancock Bulldogs scored 30 unanswered points for a 43-19 defeat, eliminating any hope for a trip to a bowl game for College of the Canyons. Despite the defeat, COC racked up 327 offensive yards to Hancock’s 395. Derrick Onwuachi had eight solo tackles, two assisted, and two sacks and Will Strong added another sack.

Four different Cougars scored touchdowns in a 36-6 win over the Santa Barbara City College Vaqueros in COC’s final home game of the 2006 season. Quarterbacks Andrew Miramontes and Ryan Whitcomb combined to throw three touchdown passes and running backs Brian Stuart and Nick Daniels ran in for additional scores in a balanced attack by the Cougars. The Cougars dominated the game, only allowing the Vaqueros to score once for a third quarter touchdown. As a team, the Cougars collected 233 yards rushing and 218 yards in the air for a total of 451 yards.

Quarterback Andrew Miramontes threw six touchdowns and ran in for another to help the Cougars even their overall record to 5-5 with a 48-29 win over Valley College in the last game of the season for COC. Miramontes scored in three of the four quarters for COC, amassing 411 yards passing after finishing the night 23-of-33. He also tied a COC record for passing touchdowns in a game with six. Despite the win, the fourth quarter was a scoreless one for the Cougars and Valley scored 15 points, but was not enough for the win.
