Sophomore quarterback Andrew Miramontes was 22-of-44 for 326 yards and three touchdowns, each to a different receiver, to give first-year head coach Garett Tujague his first win, 31-21, against Long Beach City College. COC had to overcome some first-game jitters as they watched Long Beach take a 14-9 lead into the halftime break. Canyons opened its first drive of the third quarter by looking toward the ground game, which included a 26-yard rush by running back Raphael Reynolds, for a 10-play, 71-yard touchdown drive. The Cougars made their second appearance in the end zone at 8:02 when Miramontes connected on a three-yard pass to his other running back Fred Winborn. A quarterback keeper on the extra point gave the Cougars the advantage again, 17-14. Just 30 seconds later, the Vikings were back in the red zone, after Long Beach returned Weinstein’s kickoff 85 yards to COC’s 15-yard line. Only Weinstein’s open field tackle prevented the score right then and there. Three plays later though, the Vikings took the lead again, 21-17, with 7:28 left in the third. COC scored one more touchdown in the third quarter as the defense held the Vikings scoreless in the fourth and the Cougars scored after the ball was intercepted by Anthony Luna. Reynolds topped the running backs with nine carries for 72 yards and a touchdown, while Carpenter led the air attack with 10 receptions for 199 yards and one touchdown. Linebacker Job Lujan posted 10 tackles, six solo, a fumble recovery, a pass breakup and two sacks for a loss of 23 yards. Matt Brown tallied eight tackles, five solo, while Taiino Herrera had six tackles, four solo, and a pass breakup.

The College of the Canyons Cougar football team lost an 18-point third quarter lead to the visiting Fullerton College Hornets to drop its home opener, 32-31, when the Hornets produced 19 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. The Cougars broke a 10-all tie with 6:10 left in the half when wide receiver Jovonne Augustus snagged a 44-yard touchdown reception from Andrew Miramontes to go up 17-10. The Hornets produced three more points before the half with a field goal as the Cougars went into the break with a 17-13 lead.The third quarter was all Cougars as Fullerton was kept off the scoreboard and running back Fred Winborn made his way to the end zone two times. As the third quarter belonged to COC, the fourth belonged to Fullerton. The Hornets regrouped and scored on their first possession of the quarter and closed in on the COC lead, 31-19. An onside kick by Fullerton during the kickoff put the ball back in the Hornets hands and the visiting team scored again on a touchdown reception with 8:40 to go in the game. Fullerton closed the deficit to five points, 31-26. COC received the next kickoff, but could not get out of its own territory and had to punt the ball away that set up Fullerton for its last score, and a one-point win, 32-31.

College of the Canyons combined four quarters of scoring to post a 51-24 win, in the first Western State Conference game of the season for both teams. The Cougars gathered 494 yards in total offense and quarterback Andrew Miramontes accounted for 74 percent of the yardage as he went 19-of-28 for 367 yards and four touchdowns. The Cougars fell behind quickly as Santa Barbara made the first strike on a touchdown drive that put the Vaqueros up 7-0. It would not be long before COC ran in for its own score as Raphael Reynolds returned the ensuing kickoff 83 yards for a touchdown, making him the fifth Cougar since 1998 to record a kickoff return. The Cougars continued their dominance in the game with the defense holding SBCC to only a field goal in the second half. Reynolds led the team in yardage, as he racked up 245 yards. The sophomore recorded two receptions for 105 yards and one touchdown, nine carries for 60 yards and two kickoff returns for 80 yards and one touchdown. The defense was led by defensive back Anthony Luna who tallied 12 tackles (six solo) and freshman linebacker Eric Wells recorded two sacks for a loss of 16 yards. The win over Santa Barbara boosted the Cougars’ record to 9-1 in conference openers.

COC gathered a school record 711 yards of offense against the L.A. Southwest Cougars (1-3, 0-2) to post a 56-28 win in the second Western State Conference contest of the year. COC received a big boost from freshman running back Fred Winborn who garnered 256 yards on 20 carries, setting a school record that was held by Steve Smith who had 249 yards in a 2000 game. Winborn also added four touchdowns to his resume, tying the record for rushing touchdowns in a game. The Cougars began their high-scoring afternoon with two easy points from a Southwestinduced safety. Canyons received the ball on the next possession and Winborn was in the end zone for his first score on a six-yard run. The extra point from Paul Weinstein, who went 7-for-7 on extra points, was good and the Cougars jumped to a 9-0 lead. The defense recorded eight sacks for a loss of 69 yards. Defensive lineman Jason Pierre-Paul had four sacks and four tackles, while Cedrick Hall notched three sacks, a pass breakup and two blocked kicks.

COC scored a school record 10 touchdowns for a historic 67 points against visiting West Los Angeles for the Cougars third consecutive Western State Conference victory. Previously, the most touchdowns in a game by a COC team was nine in 2000 and 2001 and the most points put on the board by Canyons was 66 in a 2000 game, which were both broken with the victory. Up 14-6 early in the first quarter, West L.A. closed in on the COC lead with its own scoring drive, which resulted in a 14-12 score. Canyons’ defense finally settled and held the Oilers scoreless for two quarters and added some scoring of their own with three interception returns for touchdowns in the second quarter. The win was the ninth time that COC has posted 60+ points in a game since 1998 and the third time that a Cougar team has garnered 50+ points in three consecutive contests. Anthony Luna and Job Lujan finished with five tackles to lead the team and Jason Pierre-Paul had three tackles (one solo), a tackle for a loss of four yards, one pass breakup and two sacks for a loss of 22 yards. Chris Black and Fred Anderson recorded two interceptions each and as a team, the defense grabbed six interceptions. The defense held West L.A. to 231 yards total, 233 yards in the air and -2 yards on 26 carries.

The College of the Canyons defense held a struggling COC offense in the game at Glendale College and made key plays down the stretch to hold off the Vaqueros, 19-10, in an inter-divisional game for both teams. The Cougars relied heavily on their rushing game Saturday evening as play caller Andrew Miramontes left the game in the third due to injury, putting an already distraught offense into a bigger hole. College of the Canyons held on to the 3-0 lead through the first quarter, but Glendale came back to tie the game at 3-all with its own field goal with 7:38 left in the half. Canyons combined a 22-yard carry from freshman running back Fred Winborn and a 54-yard touchdown pass from Miramontes to get the team down the field to top the score 9-3 with 43 seconds left in the first half. Holding on to a 16-10 lead to start the fourth quarter, the offense couldn’t get the ball back in the end zone but the defense did its part by holding Glendale scoreless for the rest of the night. The Cougars scored one more time after Job Lujan intercepted the ball and brought it to the Glendale 20. A 46-yard field goal, the longest make for Paul Weinstein during his COC career, posted the last points for College of the Canyons and final 19-10 score. The usual pass savvy Cougars garnered 342 yards of offense and 218 from rushing on the night and held Glendale to 219 yards of total offense. Anthony Luna led the defense with 11 tackles and one pass break up, while Matt Brown tallied 10 tackles and fumble recovery, two pass break ups and half a sack. Winborn had 21 carries for 133 yards and one touchdown for his third consecutive 100+ yards performance and Miramontes was 8-of-12 for 117 yards and one touchdown before leaving the game in the third quarter.

COC scored seven touchdowns and held East Los Angeles to 94 total offensive yards as COC marched over the Huskies, 53-7. Without its starting quarterback Andrew Miramontes, who was out due to injury, College of the Canyons earned a majority of its yardage on the ground as the team collected 338 yards rushing and 136 in the air for a total of 474 yards. The first score of the game came from COC when defensive back Marcus Udell grabbed his first of two interceptions at the East L.A. 22-yard line and returned it 20 yards to the two. Freshman running back Fred Winborn finished the drive with a 2-yard scamper into the end zone and COC took a 7-0 lead with 9:42 left in the first quarter. The Huskies recorded their only points of the game on the next possession as East Los Angeles scored relatively easy with a four play, 73-yard push to tie the game at 7-all. Tyler Roby had his fourth interception of the year, which included a 40-yard return. KT Thomas led the team with six tackles, four solo, one tackle for a loss, a sack and one hurry. Carpenter had another fantastic game as he garnered 125 yards on 18 receptions and one touchdown and Reynolds had 14 rushes for 114 yards and two scores. Winborn racked up 125 total rushing yards, his fourth straight game with 100+ yards rushing. Frias was 6-of-11 for 84 yards and one touchdown in his first collegiate start at quarterback.

The Cougars recorded their sixth consecutive win with a 49-28 triumph over Allan Hancock. With the victory, COC posted its 50th home win since 1998 and broke a three-way tie for first place, which Allan Hancock was a part of before the loss. The defense did its part to keep the Cougars in the game, holding the state’s rushing leader, Hancock’s Andre Cirino, to 88 yards on 14 carries, which included a 61-yard run. As a team, they held the Bulldogs to 76 yards rushing and 142 yards in the air for 218 yards of total offense. Raphael Reynolds had one score and Hayo Carpenter caught two touchdowns, while Fred Winborn scored two rushing TDs and one passing score to help the Cougars stay undefeated in conference play. Quarterback Joey Frias had a phenomenal game as he finished the night going 15-of-21 for 324 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. Carpenter led the receivers with seven catches for 183 yards and two touchdowns, which pushed him over the 1,000-yard mark for the season. Defensive lineman Clayton Byrd tallied six tackles, four unassisted, 2.5 tackles for a loss of 11 yards and one fumble recovery. Linebacker K.T. Thomas also had six tackles, three solo, and half a tackle for a loss of a yard. Defensive lineman Jason Pierre-Paul garnered four unassisted tackles, three tackles for a loss of nine yards, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

Freshman running back Fred Winborn scored three touchdowns to help the Cougars stay undefeated in conference play as they knocked off L.A. Harbor, 53-15. Winborn recorded his sixth consecutive 100+ yard rushing game and broke the COC school record for most rushing yards gained in a season with 1,164 yards and becomes the first Cougar to gain 1,000 yards in a year since the 1998 return of the COC football program. The freshman running back also broke the record for longest touchdown run with a 92-yard return in the second quarter. Harbor scored on its first possession of the game on a 36-yard field goal attempt, with just 10:09 left in the first quarter, and the Seahawks took the early 3-0 lead. That would be the only lead that Harbor would have before Canyons scored with 4:55 left in the first, from a Joey Frias 21-yard touchdown run. The evening ended with two more interceptions that were returned for touchdowns – a 10-yard score from Jerrid Byers and an 88-yarder from Fred Anderson – to help COC win its seventh consecutive game. The Cougar defense recorded four interceptions in the game from Tyler Roby, Anderson, Byers and Black. Matt Brown tallied six tackles: five solo, and half a tackle for a loss of three yards and Jason Pierre-Paul had six tackles: four solo, one tackle for a loss, three pass break ups and two sacks.

The College of the Canyons Cougars overcame a 16-point halftime deficit, but fell short of a win in the final minutes to Bakersfield College, 45-41, giving the Renegades the conference championship for the second consecutive year. Following the halftime break with the score at 35-19, the defense settled down and held BC scoreless in the third quarter, after Bakersfield had scored every time they touched the ball in the first half except on one occasion. COC took advantage of a lackluster Renegade defense as Fred Winborn scored on a 75-yard carry and a 3-yard run for his 15th and 16th touchdowns of the year. The two touchdowns put COC back in the game, 35-33. With the game and the conference championship on the line, COC brought the ball to the Bakersfield 36-yard line on 4th and 18 in the fourth quarter. The Cougars went for it and got the first down when McClellan found Winborn for a 25-yard pass completion. McClellan finished the run with a 9-yard carry into the end zone that placed COC in the lead, 41-38, with 10:35 left in the game. Bakersfield scored on its following touch that gave the Renegades the advantage again, 45-41, with 5:36 to go. COC had one more chance to score but could not convert when McClellan’s pass was picked off in the end zone with less than a minute on the clock.

The College of the Canyons football team saw four different players score five touchdowns, including one by defensive lineman Jason Pierre-Paul in the third quarter, as COC posted a 34-24 win against Saddleback College in the Western State Conference Bowl. As the Cougars took a 27-17 lead, Saddleback strung together 10 plays to go 80 yards that ended with a 30-yard touchdown pass, to sneak up on the Cougars 27-24. A turnover in the fourth quarter would seal the win for College of the Canyons. Saddleback fumbled the ball on the Cougar 36-yard line and it was recovered by Jonathon Hollins, setting COC up for its final score. As a team the Cougars only produced 334 yards of total offense (167 rushing and 167 passing) compared to the 493 yards the team was averaging. COC was also held to only 12 first downs to Saddleback’s 20, and Canyons was 2-of-12 on third down conversions. Hayo Carpenter had six catches for 99 yards and two touchdowns. The Burroughs-Ridgecrest alum’s season total of 1,287 yards broke a COC record for receiving yards in a season. Winborn was shut down on the ground in the second half by Saddleback’s defense but found ways to collect yards in the air with three catches for 56 yards, while garnering 69 yards rushing on 13 carries and one touchdown. McClellan completed his first game as a starter going 11-of-20 for 167 yards, zero interceptions and two touchdowns. Pierre-Paul had seven solo tackles, three for a loss of 20 yards, three sacks and one interception for 20 yards and a touchdown. Linebacker Matt Brown had a season-high 17 tackles, 8 unassisted.

In a game that featured 961 yards of total offense and 93 points between the two teams, the 10,078 announced fans that came out to see the Southern California Community College Football Semifinals saw a game that strengthed the rivalry between the Cougars and Renegades. In double overtime, College of the Canyons fell to Bakersfield College, 48-45, despite a rare performance that showcased Fred Winborn who scored four rushing touchdowns, tying a COC school record, and one scoring reception. COC held on to its 35-28 lead until the one-minute mark in the fourth quarter when the Renegades came back in a last second effort to tie the score again at 35. In the first overtime, Bakersfield scored on the first possession, putting the pressure on COC to score as they trailed, 42-35. College of the Canyons did just that, handing the ball to its most reliable player of the game – Winborn – as he scored his final points of the game on a four-yard carry to even the score at 42-all. In the second overtime, COC elected to get the ball first. The Cougars struggled to garner a first down and were pushed back to the 20-yard line. Weinstein attempted the 37-yard field goal that went straight through the crossbars and gave COC a 45-42 lead. But, COC could not hold off BC as they scored on a 5-yard reception that gave them the 48-45 win and the opportunity to move on in the playoffs.
