Cougar Men's Basketball Assistant Coaching Staff

Assistant Coach Mark Garlitos

Mark Garlitos enters his third season as an assistant coach for the College of the Canyons men’s basketball team. His duties include coordinating recruiting, preparing practices, scouting opponents and developing the guards. Prior to joining the Cougars staff, Garlitos spent the last four years coaching basketball at Saugus High School in the Santa Clarita Valley. Garlitos hails from the Philadelphia area where he excelled in basketball while in high school, earning First-Team All-South Jersey and All-Philadelphia area honors. After high school, Garlitos attended Camden County College and earned First-Team All-Conference and All-Region awards. Garlitos finished his playing career at American University in Washington, D.C., playing for Coaches Jim Lynam (now an assistant with the Philadelphia 76ers) and Gary Williams (now at the University of Maryland). Garlitos graduated from American University in 1979 with a bachelor’s of science in physical education and health. He resides in Saugus with his wife Laura and their two children, Kirsten and Zachary.

 

 

   

Assistant Coach Hosie Ward

Hosie Ward begins his third year as an assistant coach after spending eight seasons at Santa Monica College. Ward began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Littlerock High School in Antelope Valley. After a successful season with Littlerock, he was offered the head coaching job at Bethel Christian in Lancaster. He spent two years at Bethel Christian before he left to devote time to completing his degree and to coaching at Santa Monica. Hosie began his undergraduate studies at Grambling State University but, after his mother fell ill, left the college to help support his family. He made a promise to his mother that he would someday earn his degree, a promise that he kept. After earning enough units at Santa Monica College to earn his associates degree, he transferred to Cal State L.A. where he received his bachelor’s in psychology. He is currently working on a master’s in physical education. Hosie resides in Lake Los Angeles with his lovely wife Beryl, and their youngest son, Christopher. They have four other children, William, Marcus and Toni, who live in the Antelope Valley, and daughter Latisha, resides in Maryland.

 

 

Assistant Coach Ruben Billings

Ruben Billings joins the COC staff as an assistant coach for his third season. Billings was also an assistant coach during the 2004-05 season. Billings played high school basketball at Buena Vista High School in Saginaw, Mich., where he was All-State in football and basketball. Billings played college basketball at Kalamazoo College, where he was a four-year starter and was selected All-MIAA. Billings graduated from Kalamazoo College and attended Monterey Institute for International Studies, where he received a master’s degree in International and Comparative Politics. Billings spent 25 years in the business world, specializing in health care, managing sales people and developing sales strategies, and believes that goal setting, adherence to fundamentals, attention to detail and a burning desire to succeed are ingredients for champions. Billings has also spent a number of years doing volunteer work with youth in diabetes and basketball camps.
