2-20-09 COC Ends Regular Season With Win

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - In the final game of the regular season, College of the Canyons men's baseketball team outscored the Glendale College Vaqueros in the first overtime period to end the season with a 107-99 win. COC posted 19 points in the extra period on Saturday night and held the surging Vaqueros to 11 points. Justin Smith had 22 points and 13 rebounds to lead COC and Brannon Bradley had 22 off the bench.

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - COC dropped its fifth consecutive game on Saturday night after hosting L.A. Valley in a 87-76 loss. Brannon Bradley scored a team high 22 points and pulled down four rebounds. Jason Holzwarth also contributed 18 points. The Cougars will hit the road on Wednesday, Feb. 18 to take on Santa Monica at 5 p.m.
2-4-09 Canyons Loses to Bakersfield

SANTA CLARITA, Calif - Justin Smith and Brannon Bradley combined for 36 points in the Cougars loss to Bakersfield, 102-82. Despite having a very good shooting night, COC shot 50 percent in the game, Canyons had trouble keeping up with the fast pace Renegades. COC gave up 56 points in the first half and then 46 in the second half in the defeat. Bradley had a tem high 19 points and six rebounds. Smith earned 17 points after a 6-for-7 shooting night. The Cougars will take this weekend off and return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 5.
1-31-09 Atkins Scores 19 Off The Bench In Cougar Loss

GLENDORA, Calif. - Nineteen points from bench player CJ Atkins wasn't enough to get the Cougars past No. 2 Citrus College on Saturday night, as the team fell to the Owls, 93-77. Unlike the first match-up with the Owls at the Cougar Cage, Citrus controlled the game and kept the Cougars away from their double digit lead. Atkins had 19 points off the bench and pulled down four rebounds. Atkins shot 6-of-10 (60 percent) from the field, while the rest of the squad went 22-of-55 (40 percent). Guard Terrez Scott was the only starter in double figures with 12 points, seven assists and six steals.
COC will host Bakersfield College on Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 5 p.m. at the Cougar Cage.
1-24-09 Smith's Hot Hand Helps Cougars

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - Sophomore Justin Smith was 10-of-12 from the field for a team high 24 points on Saturday night, to lead the Cougars to their second conference victory of the season, 84-70, over Santa Monica College. Smith, who tallied a double-double, bounced back from the Valley loss (1/21/09) where he was held a season low eight points, despite scoring 20+ points in the last five contests. Sophomore Jason Holzwarth chipped in 21 points and three steals and CJ Atkins had 13 points on a 6-for-9 shooting night. COC returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 28 when they travel to Glendale College.
1-7-09 Cougars Fall In Final Minutes Of Conference Home Opener

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - The defending state champions Citrus College pulled away in the final minutes of both teams Western State Conference opener, to defeat College of the Canyons, 92-84. The Owls outscored COC 15-7 in the final five minutes of Wednesday night’s game to improve to 17-3, 1-0 in conference, while the Cougars dropped to 7-12, 0-1 in conference. The Cougars opened up a 10-3 lead in the first four minutes of play, to match their largest lead of the half. Citrus and COC would exchange buckets in the next 16 minutes of play including a combined 11-of-16 from the 3-point line. COC built a five-point lead with five minutes remaining in the first quarter, but a seven point swing, which was fueled by three Citrus 3-pointers, to end the half put the Owls up 49-47. The score remained close in the second half as COC kept up with the fast paced Owl offense that garners 83.9 ppg. The score sat at a 77 stalemate with 4:57 left in regulation, but two layups by Citrus’ Justin Johnson and Kelly Johnson, and another 3-pointer by Terrance Reaves gave Citrus a 82-77 lead. Canyons’ point guard Terrez Scott hit a layup at the 2:49 mark, to bring the lead down to five again, but Citrus built the lead up to as many as 10 in the final minute. College of the Canyons forward Justin Smith had a game high 25 points and 10 rebounds for his 16th consecutive game in double figures. For Citrus, Reaves led the way with 22 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the 3-point line. The College of the Canyons will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 10, as they travel to Bakersfield College for its first conference road game of the season.
12-10-08 Bradley's Double-Double Lifts Cougars Past Cerritos

CERRITOS, Calif. - The Cougars come off a win against Cerritos College, 87-72, for their first road win of the season. The Cougars had lost earlier in the season to the Falcons, 64-61, in the first game of the Mulligan Classic. COC overcame a first-half deficit of 11 points to gain a 36-30 lead by halftime. Canyons fell behind again by four points in the second quarter, but free throw shooting down the stretch gave the Cougars the win. Starting foward Brannon Bradley tallied a team-high 20 points and 13 rebounds. Jason Holzwarth was 9-of-10 from the free throw line, and added 16 points and one of the newest additions to the team, Eric Brown, had 12 points and six rebounds.
11-13-08 Smith Posts Second Double-Double In Loss To Cerritos

IRVINE, Calif. - College of the Canyons lost its second game of season, this time falling short to Cerritos College, 64-61, despite a stellar performance from Cougar forward Justin Smith. Smith registered his second double-double of the young season, leading all scorers with 24 points and grabbing 12 rebounds to lead Canyons (1-2). But with no other Cougar scoring in the double-digits, Canyons was unable to keep pace with Cerritos (1-1). Hoping to avenge last season’s seven-point loss to the Falcons, Canyons came out firing in the first half, shooting a combined 11-of-24 from the floor to lead by two at halftime. But the Falcons attack was too much in the second half, as Cerritos shot a combined 5-of-10 from three-point land and 15-of-29 from the floor — outscoring the Cougars 41-36 and sealing the victory.
11-8-08 COC Loses At The Buzzer

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - College of the Canyons lost in heartbreaking fashion 82-80 to Moorpark College in a game that featured nine lead changes but saw the Cougars commit 23 turnovers. Trailing by four at halftime, Canyons (1-1) battled back in the second half, outscoring the Raiders 39-37, but fell just short when the final buzzer sounded. The Cougars again made their mark inside with 44 points in the paint, while shooting a combined 50.9 percent from the floor. But with Moorpark able to score 24 points off of turnovers Canyons was never able to hold a lead. Cougar guard Jason Holzwarth led all scorers with 15 points, while guard Behrang Behjoo helped keep the pace with 13 points and five rebounds. Guard Terrez Scott and forward Jonathon Phillips each scored 11 points.
11-7-08 Cougars Win Season Opener

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - College of the Canyons opened its season with a win over Grossmont College, as the Cougars controlled the paint and dominated on the boards en route to a 98-89 victory. After overcoming an early five point Griffin advantage the Cougars (1-0) took control of the game and opened up a three-point lead headed into halftime. Led by 6-foot-6-inch forward Justin Smith, who finished the game with 20 points and 10 rebounds, Canyons registered 45 total rebounds and 66 points in the paint — compared to just 31 rebounds and 56 inside points from the Griffins. Canyons also received a boost from forward Brannon Bradley who led all Cougars with 21 points, while freshman guard Terrez Scott chipped in with 10 points, seven rebounds and eight assists. But the biggest difference may have been the Cougars hot shooting from the foul line where they shot a combined 16-of-19, compared to Grossmont’s mark of just 15-of-28. |
