5-11-09 Cougars Finish In Sixth Place At State Championship; Weltig Named All-State

ROSEVILLE, Calif. - The College of the Canyons men's golf team carded 14-over-par 365 to finish in sixth place at the California Community College Championships on Monday afternoon. The College of the Canyons improved on its first-round score of 369 to shoot a 365 at the par-72 Sierra View Country Club, but it was not enough to hold off some of the other surging teams. Fresno City won the state title scoring a 8-under 712 -- they were the only team to finish under par for the 36-hole tournament. Sophomore Ryan Weltig led COC with a 3-under-par 141. Weltig turned in a 73 in the first round to turn around and fire off a 31 on the back nine of the second round. He was the only Cougar to finish under par and to be named All-State after tying for fifth place. Justin Renaux was the closest finisher to Weltig who scored a 1-over-par 145 for a tie for 21st place.
4-27-09 COC Qualifies For SoCal Championships At Conference Finals
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The Cougars made a major turnaround on Monday afternoon after finishing in seventh place after the first 18 holes of the Western State Conference, by completing the final round in first place. COC posted a 392-371--763 for a fourth-place finish that improved its conference record to 54-23 (third place overall in conference) and a bid to the SoCal Championships. This will be head coach Gary Peterson's 15th straight appearance at the SoCal Championships and the program's 21st overall appearance. The Cougars will join conference champions Santa Barbara City, Ventura and Citrus College at the May 4 SoCal Championships. Fans can follow the results for the Southern California Championships here.
4-15-09 Cougars Have Tough Time At Home Tournament
CANYON COUNTRY, Calif. - College of the Canyons came in fifth place at the final regular season tournament held at Robinson Ranch on Wednesday afternoon. COC posted a 399 on a very cold and windy day on the par-71 course. COC (46-17) falls deeper in the conference standings behind Santa Barbara (51-12) and Ventura (48-15) before the conference finals on Monday, April 27 at the Santa Maria Country Club. COC only had one player shoot under 80, Ryan Weltig recorded a 76.
4-13-09 Cougars Come In Fifth
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Cougars lost their grip on first place after finishing the lowest they have all season. COC turned in a 25-over par 385 and won in a playoff with Allan Hancock and Moorpark for fifth place. COC (43-13) dropped in to a tie
for second place with Ventura College, while Santa Barbara City leads in first place with a 45-11 record. COC's top finishers were Ryan Weltig and Lucas Allensworth carded 76s. COC will host the final conference tournament before the the championships on Wednesday, April 15 at Robinson Ranch.
4-6-09 COC Still In First After Second-Place Finish At WSC Tournament
SOMIS, Calif. - College of the Canyons finished in second place at the sixth conference match up at Saticoy Country Club after carding a 26-over par 386 Monday afternoon. The Cougars finished three strokes behind leader Citrus College who tallied a 23-over par 383. Santa Barabara City College, who was tied with the Cougars for first place, finished in fifth place, opening the gap between the two teams. Ryan Weltig was the top performer for COC with a 74. He finished in a tie for third place. Davis Kirkland scored a 75 for a fifth-place tie.
3-30-09 COC Ties For First Place After Win
GLENDALE, Calif. - The Cougar golf team shot a 9-over par 369 on Monday afternoon to win the Western State Conference tournament and improve their overall record to 30-5, tying the team with first-place Santa Barbara City. Only three strokes separated the top three finishing teams - Canyons, Ventura and Santa Barbara. Four golfers finished under par, including sophomore Davis Kirkland who turned in a 71. COC will travel to Saticoy Country Club on Monday, April 6.
3-23-09 Cougars Finish One Stroke Out Of First Place
MOORPARK, Calif. - College of the Canyons kept pace with conference leader Santa Barbara on Monday afternoon after finishing in second place at the fourth Western State Conference. The Cougars were one stroke behind the tournament winners Ventura after posting a 382 on the par-72 Tierra Rejada Golf Course. Greg Germain was the only COC golfer to finish in the top five after finishing in second place with an even par score.

3-16-09 Canyons Comes In Second Behind Santa Barbara
SIMI VALLEY, Calif. - College of the Canyons fell seven strokes behind Santa Barbara City College at the Canyons Invitational on Monday afternoon. Santa Barbara turned in a 381 to win the tournament, while COC carded a 387 on par-72 Wood Ranch Golf Course. Davis Kirkland took home medalist honors after shooting a 71. He was one-of-three golfers to finish under par. COC returns to action on Monday, March 23 for a WSC match in Moorpark.
3-2-09 Cougars Finish Week Off With Third and First Place Finish
SOLVANG, Calif. - COC played two conference tournaments the past two days and completed the weekend with a third and first place finish. In the first match at the par-72 Marshallia Ranch Country Club, site of this year's SoCal Championships, the Cougars carded a 379. COC was tied with Citrus College for second place, but lost in a tiebreaker to finish in third place. Ryan Weltig was one of three golfers to finish under par, after stringing together a 70 for third place. Davis Kirkland turned in a 74 for a tie for fourth place. In Monday's WSC tournament, COC scored a 10-over-par 370 for first place, five strokes ahead of second place Santa Barbara. Justin Renaux finished in a tie for first place on the Ranch Course at Alisal. Weltig turned in a 71 for a tie for third place. Renaux and Weltig were one of four golfers to finish under par. COC moves into second place in the conference standings with a 17-4 record. The Cougars return to action on Monday, March 9 for the Monterey Invitational at the Poppy Hills Golf Course.

SANTA MARIA, Calif. - College of the Canyons men's golf team carded a 367 at the 72-par Santa Maria Country Club on Monday afternoon in the first conference tournament of the season. Sophomore Justin Renaux led the team shooting even par, while Davis Kirkland shot a 73 and Ryan Weltig, Lucan Allensworth and Scott Jenkins turned in 74s. COC returns to the golf course on Monday, March 2 for the second conference tournament at Alisal Ranch Golf Course.
