BROOKSVILLE, Fla. — Former College of the Canyons men’s golfer Joseph Grenier is tied for first at the Canadian Professional Golf Tour’s Florida Winter Qualifying School after two rounds of play.
Grenier held a two-shot lead over Matt Johnston of Winnipeg, Canada, after the first round, but Johnston made up the gap in day two to gain a piece of the top spot. Grenier, a Saugus native, strung together a 65 in the first round and an even-par 72 in the second round for a 137 total at the 6,800-yard Silverthorn Country Club in Brooksville. Grenier and Johnston lead a pair of golfers in third place by two strokes.
Grenier, a left-handed golfer, was a member of the COC men’s golf team in 2006 and 2007 and was runner-up at the 2007 California Amateur Championship. This is his first time participating in Canadian Q-School.
Grenier still has two more rounds left in the event. He will play one round tomorrow, March 18, and the final 18 holes on March 19. He will tee off for the third round at 7 a.m. PDT.
If Grenier remains in the leaderboard’s top nine, he will earn his Canadian Tour Golf Card and can participate in the organization’s tournaments.
