The College of the Canyons men’s golf team came in third at the Western State Conference Finals after turning in a 374, falling four strokes out of first-place Ventura (370) and two strokes behind second-place Bakersfield (372), at the Rio Bravo Country Club. With the third-place finish, the Cougars fell to second place in the team match standings with a 48-15 record. Ventura College (50-13) grabbed sole possession of the top spot in the Western State Conference after being in a two-way tie with COC the week before. Following a second-place finish at the SoCal Championships, College of the Canyons powered through the second round of the 2008 California Community College State Championships, turning in a tournament low 361 for a 7-over-par 727 36-hole score that captured the state title. COC (366-361--727) overcame a two-stroke deficit after the first 18 holes on the par-72, 7,026-yard SCGA Golf Course to take an eight-stroke lead against second-place Saddleback (364-371--735). The win marked the Cougars’ fourth state title in the past nine years and with the women’s title in the fall of 2007, was the second time in school history that head coach Gary Peterson had led both golf teams to state titles in the same academic year.

The Cougars made a major turnaround in the final round of the Western State Conference Finals, after finishing in seventh place after the first 18 holes, by completing the second round in first place. COC posted a 392-371--763 for a fourth-place finish that improved its conference record to 54-23 (third place overall in conference) and a bid to the SoCal Championships. It was head coach Gary Peterson's 15th straight appearance at the SoCal Championships and the program's 21st overall appearance. In the state championships, COC carded a 14-over-par 365 to finish in sixth place at the California Community College Championships. The Cougars improved on their first-round score of 369 to shoot a 365 at the par-72 Sierra View Country Club, but it was not enough to hold off some of the other surging teams. Sophomore Ryan Weltig led COC with a 3-under-par 141. Weltig turned in a 73 in the first round to turn around and fire off a 31 on the back nine of the second round. He was the only Cougar to finish under par and to be named All-State after tying for fifth place.

News
There were very high hopes for this year's men's golf squad that finished the conference season with a 59-1 record. The Cougars gingerly went through the 2011 season knocking off opponent after opponent, including division I programs at the California State, Bakersfield Invite in February. In the final tourney in the month of March, Canyons turned in a 10-under 350 at the 6,309-yard, par-72 San Dimas Canyon Golf Course, which ties the best score ever posted by a COC team. The Cougars travelled to the Southern California Championship in May and COC was a favorite to finish as one of the top four teams and advance to the state championship. After round one, the Cougars sat in second place and trailed host College of the Desert by four strokes. The four-stroke deficit turned into a 24-stroke deficit to first-place Desert in the second round and COC was out of the top four teams by seven strokes. Aaron West, the Western State Conference Player of the Year, and all-conference golfer Alex Macaluso competed in the state championship as individuals. They finished in a tie for third place. |
