SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Under the direction of seasoned coach Lindie Kane, the 2010 College of the Canyons Track and Field program has the potential for another state-qualifying year. Coming off a rare, middle of the pack 2009 season where both the men and women finished in sixth place in the WSC, Coach Kane is confident that this year will be different.
"We have several individuals that are very capable of qualifying," Kane reveals.
Of these individuals is sophomore Corey Honeycutt, who finished in first place in the women's 800-meter run at the Cerritos Invite on February 20, posting the fastest time by any woman in California thus far and earning a ticket to the Southern California Championships in May. Another women's contender is 2009 Southern California pole vault finalist Kamrin Megarit.
From the men’s side, top returning leaders include Michael Crutcher, a top hurdler in the state, Matt Zemba who was a part of the 2009 state-qualifying men's 4x400-meter relay team, 2009 Southern California pole vault finalist Caleb Kellog, and Mario Wright who will be doing multiple events, which include the decathlon.
Also joining the Cougars in 2010 is Matt Harmon, a state qualifier out of high school in both the 110-meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles, and Caylin Hauptmann, a top shot putter from Beverly Hills High who also plays football at College of the Canyons. Freshman K.J. Comrie is one of the fastest sprinters, and Colton Dodd is expected to be a top pole vaulter.
"Our sport is all about qualifying," says Kane.
In addition to the individuals mentioned above, she sees huge potential for the men's 4x400-meter relay team and the men's 4x100-meter relay team.
"Ultimately our goal is to go to the state meet,” Kane said. “When we get into April, that is the focus, to qualify as many people to the state championships as we can." |
