The College of the Canyons 2nd-ranke men’s and 12th-ranked women’s cross country teams finished the Mt. SAC Invitational in fourth and fifth place respectively on Friday afternoon. The men, who were running without their top three runners, were led by Ismael Samano who had a second-place finish in a time of 21:21. Liliana Beltran topped the women’s group with a 22nd-place finish with a 19:59. The Cougars rest up this weekend before the Western State Conference Championships on Tuesday, Oct. 23.

The men's cross country team won another race on Friday afternoon, nabbing a first-place finish at the SoCal Preview for the team's fifth title of the season. COC was paced by sophomore Alfredo Coronado who ran a season-best 20:15 to take home the individual win. The win for the men, propelled the team to a No. 1 ranking in Southern California according to gocollegetrack.com. The women were paced by Liliana Beltran and finished in 15th place among the 28-team field.

Coronado racked in his fourth first-place finish this season, while teammates Stephen Kent, who finished in sixth place with a time of 20:47, and Ismael Samano, who was eighth in a time of 20:52, recorded their fifth meet with top-10 finishes. As a team, the Cougars beat runners-up, Riverside by 49 points as the Cougars brought in 83 to Riverside's 132.

Liliana Beltran posted a 34th-place finish in 21:15, followed by Briana Hidalgo who came in 78th with a time of 22:22 over the three-mile course.

Stanford Invitational - September 29, 2007

Alfredo Coronado ran a 24:51 five mile to finish in 30th place at the Stanford Invitational on Saturday afternoon. As a team, COC recorded at 26th-place finish, which included 312 individuals and 32 teams. Stephen Kent finished in 124th place with a time of 25:59, Edwin Hernandez came in 217th (27:03), Thomas Stevenson 238th (27:23), Matay Mayer in 251st (27:43), Ulver Lopez in 259th (27:51) and Ismael Samano in 260th (27:51). College of the Canyons was one of four community colleges to compete in the annual event.

Bakersfield Invite - September 28, 2007

Freshman cross country runner Liliana Beltran recorded a ninth-place finish, her best of the year, in a time of 20:30 to help the women's cross country team to third place at Friday's Bakersfield Invite. The men's team that was split between the Bakersfield Invite and the Stanford Invitational finished in fifth place.

Scoring for the women was rounded out by Briana Hidalgo (21:40), Paulina Franco (21:44), Jenna Perea (22:00) and Debbie Lopez (22:21).

Robin Arnold earned a 17th-place finish in a time of 23:00 to lead the men's team. Followed by Arnold was Erick Morales (23:29), Jonathon Gomez (23:54), Cameron Knox (23:55) and Oscar Toledo (24:00).

Ventura Invite - September 7, 2007

Sophomore Alfredo Coronado finished in first place at Friday’s four mile Ventura Invitational with a time of 21:37 en route to helping the College of the Canyons men’s cross country team to their second consecutive team title of the year. The women, led by Liliana Beltran, finished in eighth place.

The Cougars placed three runners in the top 10 as Stephen Kent (21:58) and Ismael Samano (22:04) finished in third and sixth place respectively. COC beat out 11 other teams, including second-place finisher Mt SAC whom the Cougars beat by less than two seconds.

Rounding out the Canyons scoring was 13th-place finisher Martan Mayer (22:56), 14th-place finisher Edwin Hernandez (22:57) and Ulver Lopez (23:36) who completed the race in 28th place.

The women finished the 11-team, 5K in eighth place. Beltran (23:00) was the top finisher for the Cougars with a 19th-place performance. Paulina Franco posted a 25:14 for 43rd place, followed by Brenda Palomino (25:23), Debbie Lopez (26:17), Briana Hidalgo (26:19) and Melissa Hampton (27:06).

The men’s win moved the Cougars up to No. 2 in Southern California, according to gocollegetrack.com, and the women stayed at No. 12. 

The Cougars return to action on Saturday, Sept. 15 as they travel to the Fresno Invite.

Moorpark Invite - September 1, 2007

The College of the Canyons cross country program found some early-season success this week, as the men’s team won the 2007 Moorpark Invite and the women’s team placed fourth in the annual event.

Led by sophomore Alfredo Coronado, who placed second with an individual time of 15:49 on the 5K course, and fourth-place runner Stephen Kent who finished with a time of 16:07, the Cougars were able to edge out second-place Antelope Valley College with a team score of 40 points.

Also helping the Cougars — who had a total of three runners finish in the top seven —were performances by Ismael Samano who placed seventh with a time of 16:12, and Edwin Hernandez who placed came 12th with a time of 16:44.

The Lady Cougars fourth-place effort was paced by the 10th-place finish of Liliana Beltran with a time of 21:03, and Jenna Perea’s time of 22:59, which placed her 24th in the competition.

Pre-season Southern California team rankings released by GoCollegeTrack.com rank the COC men’s cross country team fourth in the state, while the women’s team is ranked 12th.
