5-12-09 COC Collects Handful Of Post-Season Honors

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Following second-year head coach John Wissmath’s most successful season at College of the Canyons, Wissmath and his team earned six all-conference awards, Pitcher of the Year accolades for freshman Ashley Imperial and Coach of the Year honors for John Wissmath. Imperial also was named to the All-State team and Lauren Rose was honored with All-Southern California accolades.

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – The 2009 Co-Champion Western State Conference, Blue Division, College of the Canyons (27-14) softball team earned a No. 9 seed in the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Southern California Regional Playoffs. The Cougars will travel to No. 8 Saddleback College (27-12) on Saturday, May 2 for the two-day, best-of-three series.

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - The College of the Canyons softball team clinched at least a share of the Western State Conference, Blue division, title on Thursday with a double-header victory over visiting Bakersfield College. In the first game, the Cougars mounted a 16 hit attack as they defeated the Renegades, 13-0. Ashley Imperial came within one out of pitching a no-hitter, notching her 14th win of the season. Jessica Fridwall and Sarah Hasenfus each had three RBIs and Lauren Rose posted four doubles. In the second game COC's Sara Campos hit a RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 3-2 win. Trailing 2-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Rose hit her 5th double of the day leading off the inning. Two outs later, Campos came up and hit what proved to be the game ending and conference title clinching double that was just tipped and missed by left fielder Brittany Hunt. Pitcher Imperial improved her conference record to a perfect 12-0 and her overall record to 14-4.

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - The College of the Canyonsy Cougars took one more step toward a conference championship on Tuesday by defeating visiting Glendale College by a score of 2-0. Canyons' overall record improved to 25-15 and its conference record improved to 15-5. Ashley Imperial pitched brilliantly by shutting out Glendale, striking out seven and yielding only three hits. The Cougars scored once in the first when Whitney Bruce singled, stole second and was driven in by a Jessica Fridwall single. The Cougars added another run in the second when Amber Jensen doubled in Jacklyn Ruacho who had singled.
4-7-09 Cougars Take Lead In Conference

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - Led by the superlative pitching of Ashley Imperial, the College of the Canyons Cougars softball team triumphed over visiting L.A. Mission on Tuesday by a score of 1-0. With the win, COC takes over the top spot in the conference with three games left in the season. The only run of the game came in the bottom of the third inning when Sarah Hasenfus scored on a double by Lauren Rose. The play of the game came in the top of the fifth when Amanda Gutierrez doubled for Mission but was cut down by a perfect relay from Cougar centerfielder Amber Jensen to her cut-off Nikki Kobashigawa who then turned and gunned the Mission runner down at third base with Melissa Herndon applying the inning-ending tag.

VENTURA, Calif. - The COC softball team went 1-2-1 this weekend at the Ventura College Tourney. COC earned its only win over Cypress, 5-1, lost to Pasadena, 7-1, and Fresno, 6-1, while tying Chaffey, 3-3. In the opener, the Cougars could manage only five hits with Jacklyn Ruacho accounting for three of them in a losing cause. The second game was a thrilling back and forth battle with Cypress, one of the best teams in the state. The Cougars started off with a bang as Lauren Rose led off the game with a home run. The Lady Cougars built a 5-1 lead, but Cypress kept clawing back and finally overcame the deficit when they scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, due to timing issues, to claim the victory. In the first Sunday game, the Cougars scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game at 3-all and then held Chaffey College scoreless in the bottom of the seventh that resulted in a tie game. Rose hit a home run in the sixth inning which pulled Canyons within two runs setting the stage for the heroics of the seventhth inning two-run rally. In the second game, Canyons just could not recover from a five-run fifth inning and lost to Fresno City College by a score of 6-1.

VALLEY GLEN, Calif. - The softbal team split a double-header at Valley College on Thursday afternoon. In the first game, Canyons just couldn't get their offense in gear as they were shutout, 5-0. The second game was close from beginning to end with the Cougars scoring two runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 2-1 lead. The Monarchs got the tying run on in the bottom of the seventh, but pitcher Ashley Imperial got the Valley College batter to fly out to Whitney Bruce for the final out. Imperial earned her eighth victory of the season in conference and improved her overall record 1to 2-5. This weekend Canyons will participate in the Ventura tournament.
3-31-09 Imperial Moves Cougars Past Citrus

GLENDORA, Calif. - Ashley Imperial pitched and hit her way to her 10th overall win of the season as the Cougars downed Citrus 3-2. Imperial drove in the tying run for the Cougars in the sixth inning and Nikki Kobashigawa followed with a single of her own erasing a 2-0 deficit to put Canyons ahead for good. Imperial scattered six hits in notching her seventh conference victory. The Cougars travel to Valley College for a double-header on Thursday before finally returning home to Whitten Field for a much anticipated game on Tuesday, April 7 against Mission at 2:30 p.m.
3-24-09 Cougars Keep Pace With First Place Mission

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The College of the Canyons Cougars travelled north to Bakersfield on Tuesday and came away with a 5-2 victory over the Renegades. Melissa Herndon got her 12th win of the season with relief help from Ashley Imperial in the sixth inning when Bakersfield mounted a minor rally. Imperial shut down the uprising retiring all five batters she faced for her first save of the season. Canyons' left fielder Whitney Bruce had two hits and two RBIs in the victory. Also contributing two hits for Canyons was Sarah Hasenfus. The Cougars' next game is an away contest at Citrus College next Tuesday, March 31.
3-23-09 Canyons Notches 20th Win Of The Season

OXNARD, Calif. - The College of the Canyons travelled to windy and cold Oxnard College for a Monday make-up game against the Condors. Sara Campos provided all the fire power and runs needed with a two-run home run in the fourth inning. This was all the offense Ashley Imperial needed as she pitched the Cougars to a 6-0 victory while giving up just one single in the process. Melissa Herndon added three hits for the victors as Canyons improved their overall record to 20-10 and their conference record to 10-4. Joining in on the offense were Whitney Bruce with two RBIs and Jessica Fridwall with two singles. Ashley Imperial continued her superb pitching in notching her ninth win overall for the season and staying perfect 6-0 in conference.

SAN MARCOS, Calif. - The College of the Canyons women's softball team travelled south to Palomar College to play a double-header on Saturday. The results were mixed with the Cougars dropping the first game 2-0 but coming back strong in the nightcap, defeating Palomar 10-6. In the first game, Ashley Imperial gave up a two-run homerun in the first inning and those runs stood up as Canyons was never able to catch up. In the second game, the Cougars came out swinging and jumped out to a 6-0 lead. Palomar kept chipping away at the lead and trailed 6-3 heading into the top of the seventh. Canyons scored four runs in the inning and held on as Palomar launched a futile comeback attempt by scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh before losing 10-6. Whitney Bruce had three RBIs and Melissa Herndon and Lauren Rose added three hits apiece for the victorious Cougars. Melissa also garnered her 11th victory of the season.

The College of the Canyons split a double-header on Tuesday at Glendale College. Canyons won the first game by a score of 7-0. In the game, Jacklyn Ruacho and Nikki Kobashigawa had three hits each and Melissa Herndon and Whitney Bruce added two RBIs each. Melissa Herndon got her 10th win of the season while striking out seven Glendale batters. Karen Torres relieved in the seventh inning and struck out 2 of the 3 batters she faced. In the second game, Canyons had runners on second and third in the top of the seventh but just could not push over the tying run and lost a heart breaker by a score of 4-3. Lauren Rose and Whitney Bruce added triples in a losing cause. The Cougar's record now stands at 18-9 overall and 9-4 in conference games. The Cougars travel south to Palomar for games this Saturday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

LANCASTER, Calif. - The College of the Canyons won a heart-stopping game on Tuesday at Antelope Valley College by a score of 2-1. Canyons scored two runs in the third but AVC came back in its half of the inning with a run of its own. Ashley Imperial pitched brilliantly and got the win and Melissa Herndon got the save. Herndon added two doubles and the winning RBI in the two-run third. The game ended when, with two on and two out, Jade Terry hit a shot headed for right field until Sarah Hasenfus dived and caught it ending the game. The Cougars next games will be a double-header at Glendale College on Thursday.

SYLMAR, Calif. - The College of the Canyons split a double-header at Mission College on Thursday afternoon. The Cougars lost the first game by a score of 5-4, after they got off to a fast start in the first inning scoring two runs. However, Mission answered in the bottom half of the first with three runs of its own. They added two runs in the second and were never let the Cougars get close, even as the Cougars launched a valiant comeback to get close. Amber Jensen had two hits in a losing cause. The second game went eight innings with COC scoring two runs in the top of the eighth inning and holding off Mission in their half of the eighth to secure a 5-3 victory. Sara Campos had three hits. Pitcher Ashley Imperial had a big double in the eighth to drive in the tie-breaking run, fielded her position flawlessly and pitched brilliantly to notch her seventh victory of the season against two losses. Melissa Herndon added two hits for Canyons.

Ashley Imperial scattered seven hits and improved her record to 6-2 and came oh-so-close to a shutout, but a seventh inning run by LAVC spoiled chanc. Canyons was led by a three-hit performance by Lauren Rose as well as a two-RBI performance by Whitney Bruce. Jessica Fridwall added to the fun with a single, a double, a walk and three runs scored.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The College of the Canyons Cougars defeated No. 5 Cypress, 5-3, and No. 4 Mt. SAC, 4-3, in a Sunday afternoon double header. In the first game, Melissa Herndon allowed just five hits to Cypress College en route to a complete game. Lauren Rose and Sara Campos had two hits each for COC and Annie Miller came off the bench to get her second pinch hit in as many chances. Lauren Rose, Sarah Hasenfus, Jessica Fridwall, Jacklyn Ruacho and Miller had RBIs in the victory. In the second game, Ashley Imperial pitched a complete game and Rose added four hits in a 4-3 win over Mt. San Antonio College. Fridwall had two hits as did Herndon. Herndon also added a two-run home run in the first inning. The Cougars travel to Moorpark for a Tuesday game then return home for a double header on Thursday against Citrus at 1 p.m.

In the first game against last year's state champion Cerritos, COC could only muster two hits, while Cerritos gathered four. Canyons' Melissa Herndon pitched well, striking out eight Falcons and giving up only four hits. A leadoff triple and a sacrifice fly resulted in the only run of the game.In the second game, a seventh inning rally fell short as the Cougars fell to Cosumnes River. Cosumnes jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and survived a two-run, seventh inning uprising by the Cougars. Lauren Rose had a triple and Jacklyn Raucho had a double for Canyons.

In the first game, a three-run triple by Jacklyn Naucho propelled the Lady Cougars to a 4-3 victory over visiting Fullerton. West Ranch graduate Melissa Herndon improved her record to 3-2 as the winning pitcher. There was no scoring after the second inning as Fullerton left nine runners on base. In the second game, Ashley Imperial got the win while striking out 12 American River batters. Lauren Rose had two hits and drove in the only run in the bottom of thesixth inning as the Cougars beat the Beavers 1-0.

Five Cougars got hits with the big blow, a two-run Sarah Hasenfus triple. Jessica Fridwall scored twice and Niki Kobashigawa had two stolen bases in the victory. Winning pitcher Melissa Herndon pitched five strong innings and gave up one run and only two hits while striking out seven.
