SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – The College of the Canyons softball team finished the 2010 campaign by collecting a handful of postseason honors. Leading the team with awards were infielder Ruby Herrera and outfielder Melissa Herndon, who were both named All-American. This marks the first time that COC softball head coach John Wissmath has had two All-American honorees on one team.

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Coming off a Western State Conference Co-Championship season in 2009, the Cougars made sure to be greedy this time around, taking sole possession of first place, and claiming the title of “Champions” all for themselves. Now, the back-to-back champs are heading to the playoffs for the second time in head coach John Wissmath’s three years at COC, as they travel to No. 9 Grossmont as the No. 8 seed in the first round of the California Community College Athletic Association Southern California Regional.

SYLMAR, Calif. - College of the Canyons softball player Melissa Herndon went 4-for-4 on Thursday afternoon and the Cougars defeated L.A. Mission 8-4. Herndon had a triple and three RBI in the Cougars 13 conference win of the season. Sarah Biggs earned the win, after pitching a complete game. She gave up eight hits, four runs (one earned) and struckout one batter. COC returns to action on Thursday, April 15 to take on Glendale at 2:30 p.m.

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - College of the Canyons softball team finished off its regular season homestand on Tuesday afternoon with two wins over L.A. Valley, 4-1 and 6-1. Pitcher Ashley Imperial pitched both games for COC. She gave up 8 hits, two runs (one earned) and struckout eight in two games of work. Whitney Bruce, Melissa Herndon, Karissa Hartwig, Noel Luongo all hit doubles in the win. In game two, the Cougars broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning with five runs. COC sits on top of the conference standings and are one game ahead of second-place Citrus College with four conference games left in the season. COC will travel to Mission College on Thursday, April 8 for a 2:30 p.m. game.

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - The College of the Canyons softball team took another step towards another conference title on Thursday by downing Citrus College, 10-3. The Cougars were led offensively by shortstop Ruby Herrera who went 4-for-4 and scored four runs. Ashley Imperial improved to 13-6 overall and 6-1 in conference, after garnering a complete game. COC will play its last regular season home games on Tuesday, April 6 as they take on Valley at 1 and 3 p.m.

VENTURA, Calif. -
COC dropped only one game in the four-game Ventura tournament this weekend. In the first game against Ventura, pitcher Ashley Imperial earned her 10th win of the season, after exploding for eight runs in the sixth inning, to win 12-0. In the second game of the day, COC fell to Cypress, 10-6, after losing a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third. On Sunday, COC took on Chaffey in the first game, winning 8-6, as Sarah Biggs picked up her sixth win of the season. Later in the day, COC held Antelope Valley scoreless in an 8-0 victory. Imperial gave up one hit in the victory for her 11th win this seasons. COC will return home on Tuesday, March 30 for a double header against Santa Monica at 1 p.m.

Ashley Imperial gave up just two hits and no runs while striking out six on Thursday afternoon, where the College of the Canyons softball team mercy ruled Bakersfield 8-0. Melissa Herndon’s two-run shot in the bottom of the first launched the Cougars into a hitting frenzy as six of the team’s 10 hits went for extra bases. Karissa Hartwig was 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles, Ruby Herrera went 2-for-3 with a triple, Alexis Caso was 2-for-3 with a double, and Jessica Fridwall also picked up a two-bagger. The win has improved the Cougars’ conference record to 7-2. They will travel to Ventura for a four-game tournament beginning on Saturday, March 27 at 11 a.m.

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – The College of the Canyons softball team split two games on Saturday, taking care of Moorpark 4-3 and later falling to Mt. SAC 7-0. In the first game, the Cougars trailed 3-1 going into the bottom of the seventh inning. With two outs and runners on second and third, Alexis Tellez singled to bring in Jessica Fridwall and Whitney Bruce. Tellez took second on the late throw to the plate and set up the seventh inning heroics from Karissa Hartwig. Hartwig blasted the ball over the left fielder's head easily scoring Tellez and giving the Cougars a come-from-behind two-out victory over Moorpark. Ashley Imperial, who had earlier gotten clobbered in the right shin with a line drive up the middle, got the win and improved her overall record to 7-5. In the second game of the afternoon, COC lost by a score of 7-0. Mt. SAC garnered a total of 17 hits and the Cougars just could not get any kind of sustained rally going. Fridwall did have two hits, but that was about all the offense the Cougars could muster. The Cougars play on Tuesday, March 23 as they host Glendale City College in a double-header at 1 p.m.

VALLEY GLEN, Calif. - The College of the Canyons Cougars got back to winning, with a road victory, 10-0, at L.A. Valley College on Thursday. Behind the one-hit pitching of Sarah Biggs, the Cougars pounded out 12 hits en route to a rout of the Monarchs. Leading the hit parade with three RBI each were Noel Luongo and Karissa Hartwig. Luongo, Hartwig, Jessica Fridwall and Whitney Bruce added two hits each. The Lady Cougars come home on Tuesday as they host L.A. Mission College for a double header starting at 1 p.m.

SANTA MONICA, Calif. - The Cougar softball team began its 2010 conference with quite a bang on Thursday after defeating Santa Monica College 26-0. After going down with no runs in the first inning, the Cougars erupted for 26 runs in the next four innings to bury Santa Monica. Ashley Imperial pitched the first three innings striking out six and Karissa Hartwig finished off the last two innings as they duo combined for a no-hitter. The Cougars' hitting stars were numerous, led by Ruby Herrera who belted out two homeruns , a triple and a double and had six RBI. Joining her in the hit barrage were Whitney Bruce, who hammered out two doubles, a triple and a homerun as well. Adding triples to the triumph were Alexis Caso, Herrera, Melissa Herndon and Noel Luongo. The Cougars improved their overall record to 7-3 and their conference record to 1-0. Ashley Imperial, who struck out six in her three innings, improved her record to 5-3 overall while notching her first conference victory of the season. The Cougars travel to Bakersfield on Sunday for the Bakersfield tournament.

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - The College of the Canyons Cougar softball team got back on the winning track on Friday with a double header victory over visiting Cuesta, 11-2 and 15-7. The Cougars got a stellar pitching performance in the first game from Sarah Biggs as she notched her first complete game and victory of the season. Melissa Herndon led the hitters, gathering three hits, including a double. Jessical Fridwall added a double and power hitter Alexis Tellez belted a homerun in the second inning. The got off to a rather shaky start as Cuesta put up three unearned runs off eventual winning pitcher Ashley Imperial in the top of the first inning. The Cougars answered in the bottom of the first with eight runs, with eight different Cougars getting at least one hit in the victory. Whitney Bruce slugged a triple and Fridwall, Alexis Caso and Stephanie Pena added doubles. Imperial improved her record to 5-2. The Cougars will travel to Santa Monica College on Thursday, March 4 for a 2:30 p.m. game.

Whitney Bruce continued her hot hitting with a triple and a single which resulted in three RBI and Alexis Tellez added two hits in the losing cause. Canyon's record now stands at 4-3 in pre-conference. The Cougars will play Friday, Feb. 26 as they host Cuesta in a double header at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

2-16-10 Canyons Drop Thriller To Antelope Valley

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - The College of the Canyons lost a pitcher's duel on Tuesday to Antelope Valley by a score of 2-1. AVC scored a run in the top of the third, and the Cougars countered with a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Whitney Bruce. In the top of the eighth, the Marauders' Amanda Perez hit what appeared to be a home run giving AVC a 3-1 lead, but COC coach John Wissmath noticed that Perez failed to touch home. The umpire agreed and the score reverted to 2-1. Unfortunately, the Cougars could not take advantage of the error as they went down in order in their half of the eighth. Ashley Imperial struck out seven AVC batters .Whitney had a great game in a losing cause by singling three times. COC's record is now 4-2. The Cougars next next game is Thursday, Feb. 25 at Santa Barbara. Game time is 2:30 p.m.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - College of the Canyons went 1-1 on Saturday afternoon in a double header against Riverside College. In the first game, which went 10 innings, the Cougars scored a run in the top of the 10th via a solo home run from Ruby Herrera. That gave them a 3-2 lead which held up for the victory. Also contributing to the win with RBI were Melissa Herndon and Noel Luongo. Ashley Imperial went the distance for a complete game victory. In the second game, two Cougar errors allowed Riverside to score five unearned runs in the second inning. The Tigers then used five hits to score six more runs in the third. The Cougars launched a valiant attempt at a comeback in the top of the fifth when they scored three runs, but it was too little too late. Jessica Fridwall had two RBI in the loss. The Cougars host Antelope Valley on Tuesday, Feb. 16 at 2:30 p.m.

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - The College of the Canyons started the 2010 season on two good notes with a double-header victory over visiting Santiago Canyon. The first game was a real nail biter with the Cougars narrowly coming out with a 2-1 victory. Sophomore pitcher Ashley Imperial pitched a complete game and got the victory. The winning runs were scored in the bottom of the fifth inning when freshman shortstop Ruby Herrera doubled in fellow freshman Stephanie Pena and subsequently scored on a fielding error. The second game, also won by Imperial, was less dramatic than the first one, but just as satisfying. The Cougars amassed 10 runs and 12 hits in their 10-3 victory. Melissa Herndon let the Cougars with three hits and two RBI. Jessica Fridwall, Alexis Tellez and Whitney Bruce had two hits each as well. Additionally, Karissa Hartwig drove in three big runs, two of them coming in the second inning with a double. COC plays this Friday, Feb. 5 as the travel to Riverside for a double-header at 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
