4-12-11 Cougars Fall To Citrus

GLENDORA, Calif. -
The College of the Canyons softball team gave up five runs in the second inning to host Citrus College on Tuesday afternoon, which was too much for COC to overcome as they lost to first-place Citrus 10-2 in six innings. Canyons gave up five runs on two hits in the second and was held to only one more run the rest of the game. The Cougars were outhit by the Owls 13-4, but saw a bright spot when Karissa Hartwig hit a homerun to center field. COC will travel to Valley for a double-header on Thursday, April 14.

GLENDALE, Calif. - The College of the Canyons softball team divided two games with Glendale College on Thursday afternoon on the road. In the first game, COC
lost 7-3 after scoring the first three runs of the game. Glendale would rally against the Cougars in the first game after COC scored the first three runs of the game in the first inning. COC was out hit in the game 12-4. In the second game of the afternoon, Canyons was the team to rally in the sixth and seventh inning for a 4-1 victory. Karissa Hartwig and Samantha Martin hit back-to-back homeruns in the sixth to take a 2-1 lead. Canyons added two more insurance runs in the seventh inning for good measure. Hartwig gave up four hits in the circle and struckout six, while Caitlyn Zimmerman was 2-of-3 on the afternoon. The Cougars will travel to the two-day Ventura Tournament on Saturday, April 1.

Canyons notched eight runs, seven in the second inning and one in the third, and the Cougars earned their fifth conference win over L.A. Valley College. Catcher Amy Droege was the only softball player to have two RBI in the game after going 1-for-3 with a homerun. Pitcher Karissa Hartwig won her ninth game, pitching five innings and giving up only five hits in the game. The College of the Canyons will host L.A. Mission on Thursday, March 24 for a double header at 1 p.m.

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - The College of the Canyons softball team split a double header with Citrus College on Thursday afternoon breaking the Cougars four-game winning streak. In the first game, COC rallied to a 3-2 win over the Owls after a two-run sixth inning. Karla Lira led COC going 2-of-2 with a RBI and a homerun. Karissa Hartwig improved to 8-8 while giving up five hits, two runs, four walks and striking out three batters. In the second game, COC struggled and lost its first conference game of the year 9-1. The Cougars could only garner four hits in the game, coupled with two errors. Pitcher Alisha Paiz had her first loss of the season. She pitched 2 2/3 innings and gave up six hits and six runs. The Cougars will host L.A. Valley on Tuesday, March 22 at 2:30 p.m.

The College of the Canyons softball team improved to a perfect 3-0 in conference on Tuesday afternoon after blanking Santa Monica 10-0 at Ray Whitten Field. Starter Karissa Hartwig pitched three scoreless innings, while giving up one hit after facing 13 batters. Samantha Martin led the Cougars going 3-of-3 with a team high four RBI. Canyons will host Citrus in a double header on Thursday, March 17 at 1 and 3 p.m.

College of the Canyons beat Cuesta College 14-0 and 4-3 in two road games for the Cougars on Thursday afternoon at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo to improve to 5-7 on the year. In the first game of the afternoon, Canyons turned in 11 hits, while holding Cuesta to three. Pitcher Amanda Martin went five innings and gave up no runs and walked one batter. Leftfielder Stephanie Berry was 2-of-3 with three RBI and a homerun and Bryanna De La Torre was 2-of-4 with three RBI. In the second game of the afternoon, Cuesta kept it much closer with a three-run sixth inning to tie up the game at 3-3. Canyons' Caitlyn Zimmerman hit a triple in the top of the seventh inning that brought in the tie breaking run and gave COC a 4-3 advantage. Relief pitcher Karissa Hartwig threw a no-hit final inning, holding on to the win for COC. Hartwig led the Cougars going 2-of-3 with on RBI. Canyons will host Palomar College in a double header on Saturday, March 5 at 1 and 3 p.m.

After two scoreless innnings to start the game, COC opened up a the third inining with two runs, which started the scoring against Reedley College on Thursday afternoon, leading the Cougars to a 7-0 victory over the Tigers. Amy Droege was 2-for-3, including a homer, with two RBI and Bryanna De La Torre went 2-for-3 with one RBI. Pitcher Karissa Hartwig earned her second win of the year, pitching a complete game. She gave up four hits and struckout three batters in the shotout. COC will travel to Bakersfield on Sunday, Feb. 26 to take on Mt. SAC and Cypress.

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - The College of the Canyons softball team was held scoreless, 7-0, against visiting Santa Barbara College on Tuesday afternoon. The Cougars only recorded one hit in the game against Santa Barbara's Kailey who had registered 25 strikeouts in four games, entering Tuesday's match up. Karla Lira notched COC's lone hit of the game. Pitcher Karissa Hartwig went seven innings and gave up 12 hits, six runs (five earned) and struckout three batters. COC will return to action on Thursday, Feb. 24 to host Reedley at 2 p.m.

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - The College of the Canyons softball team split two games on Saturday afternoon against Long Beach City College and American River College. The Cougars started off the day against No. 14 Long Beach City College where Canyons lost 12-2. Canyons allowed Long Beach to score its 12 runs in the first two innings, but it was too big of a deficit for the home team to overcome.
COC's bats also had a tough afternoon, only garnering four hits. Karissa Hartwig earned the loss. She gave up 13 hits, nine earned runs and struckout three batters. In the second game, COC had its second win of the year with a 13-5 win over American River. After allowing American River to take a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the second, Canyons put up five runs in the second inning and six in the fourth to even its record for the day. Bryanna De La Toree went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a double and Amy Droege was 2-of-2 with a RBI and double. COC will return to the field on Tuesday, Feb. 15 as they travel to Antelope Valley for a 1 p.m. game.
2-3-11 COC Loses Season Home Opener To Riverside

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - Canyons lost a 4-1 lead against Riverside City College Thursday afternoon, to eventually lose 7-4. College of the Canyons gave up four runs, including one on an error, in the fifth inning that relinquished COC's lead through the first four innings. Caitlyn Zimmerman was 2-of-3 with an RBI and Shaland Romero went 2-of-4. Karissa Hartwig was in the circle for the whole game and gave up 12 hits, seven runs, five earned, and walked three in her second loss of the year.
1-29-11 COC Drops Two In Season Opener
ORANGE, Calif. -
In the first game of the double header, COC lost a 3-0 lead with a three-run sixth inning by the Hawks that gave the game to Santiago Canyon. Canyons was led by freshman outfielder Bryanna De La Torre who was three-of-four and freshman Amy Droege who also went three-of-four with one RBI. In the second game, COC took a 4-1 lead in the top of the second inning, but Santiago Canyon put up five runs on five hits in its half. Both teams would add another run in the fourth inning, but it wasn’t enough for COC to overcome the Hawks’ lead. Sophomore Karissa Hartwig had a home run and De La Torre had two doubles and two RBI in the loss.
