SANTA CLARITA, Calif .- The College of the Canyons softball team forced an extra game, by handing Riverside College their first shut out of the season, 8-0, before falling 5-3 in the Super Regional finals on Sunday afternoon, ending its playoff run.
In the first game, the Cougars trampled the Tigers, holding them scoreless behind the excellent pitching of Kimmie Lockhart.
She pitched five innings, struck out seven, allowing no runs and one hit.
COC scored at least one run in every inning and they started the game off with scoring four in the first.
In the first inning, catcher Amy Droege hit a two-run single, while Caitlyn Zimmerman and Kimmie Lockhart each had RBIs.
Catcher Adrianna Correa banged her 23rd and 24th home runs of the season and outfielder Jenny Wunderlich had three hits and a RBI.
In the second game, the Cougars had a 2-1 lead through four innings, but they made some costly errors late in the game, as they suffered a heartbreaking 5-3 loss.
First baseman Shay Romero hit an RBI single in the second inning to give Canyons an early 1-0 lead.
Pitcher Kimmie Lockhart hit an RBI single in the third inning, increasing COC's lead to 2-0.
The score was tied at 2-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning and that's when things went downhill for COC.
Second baseman Nikki Haslock made a fielding error followed by a Droege throwing miscue, which resulted in two Riverside runs.
The Cougars trailed 5-2 entering the top of the seventh.
COC had runners on second and third and Lockhart was the tying run at the plate. She hit a sacrifice fly for an RBI, cutting the deficit to 5-3.
Correa was on third base with two outs and Droege was the tying run at the plate, but she flied out and the state championship run came to an end.
Lockhart lost only her third game of the season, as she threw six innings, struck out five and allowed six hits on five runs.
The Cougars finish the season with a 42-5-1 record.
