2-29-08 Cougars Playoff Run Cut Short By Saddleback College

MISSION VIEJO, Calif. – The high scoring College of the Canyons women’s basketball team was held to 59 points on Saturday night as the Cougars made an early exit out of the playoffs with an 84-59 loss to Saddleback College. COC shot a dismal 29.4 percent (20-68) from the field and was 40.6 percent from the free throw line (13-32), and recorded its second lowest points in a game. The Cougars only had 57 points against Mt. SAC on Nov. 20 and had 59 against the Mounties in a game on Nov. 11. The first-round loss is the third for head coach Greg Herrick after reaching the state semi finals last season. The Gauchos opened a 15-8 run in the first six minutes of the game to create an 11-point lead over COC and it didn’t help that COC committed five turnovers in the same span. Canyons made a run in the middle of the half, coming within two, 21-19, from an Ivory Blockmon 3-pointer at the 10:15 mark. Saddleback would put up one more scoring spurt and take a 19-point advantage, 49-30, into the break. The scoring problems continued for COC after the break and could only cut the lead to 13 points. The Cougars shot even worse in the second half, only making nine field goals in 35 tries and were 8-of-18 from the free throw line. All-State guard Andrea Bobic was held to 13 points and was one of two players to score in double digits. She pulled down 11 rebounds in the contest, for her sixth consecutive double-double. Charity Smith led the team with 14 points.

2-23-08 Canyons Recovers From Loss With 102-74 Rout of Glendale College

GLENDALE, Calif. - The Cougars followed the lead of All-Western State Conference player Andrea Bobic as she poured in 25 points and 26 rebounds on Saturday night at Glendale College, as the Cougars recoreded a 102-74 win over the Vaqueros in the final regular season game for both teams. The Cougars, who come off a loss to Santa Monica College, remain in a tie for first place with the SMC Corsairs. The win over Glendale marks head coach Greg Herrick's third consecutive season with 20+ wins and his 12th overall with COC. Bobic only missed two of her shots from the field, going 10-of-13 and 4-of-5 from the 3-point line. Charity Smith also had a great game with 17 rebounds and 20 points. As a team, COC shot 56.1 percent from the field and recorded its fifth 100+ point game of the season.
2-20-08 Cougars Come Up Winless In Season Series Versus Santa Monica

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - The College of the Canyons women's basketball team shot 29.4 percent in the second half, after building up a 10-point lead in the first, eventually falling to Santa Monica College, 90-80, for the second time this season. The loss ties the Cougars with the Corsairs for first place in the Western State Conference South, with each team scheduled for one more game before the end of the regular season. The Cougars, who fall to 9-2 in conference have not lost a season series 0-2 since the 2004-05 season, when COC dropped two games to Bakersfield College en rout to an 8-4 season and a third-place finish. COC took a commanding 10-point lead in the first 11 minutes of play, but the Corsairs played gritty defense and closed tied the game at 40-all. COC would come back though, and closed the final two minutes of the half on a 7-1 run that opened up a 47-41 lead at the intermission. Santa Monica came out of the break swinging and depleted the six-point Cougar lead, building their own five-point advantage. A late 8-0 run with less than five minutes left in the game, gave the Corsairs the win for good. As a team, Canyons shot 60 percent (29-64) in the first half, then dropped to 29.4 percent (10-34) from the field in the second. COC did not make one 3-point shot in the second half in six attempts. Sophomore Kelly O'Linn scored 24 points and dished out three assists, and starter Arielle White had 13 points and six assists. Sophomore guard Andrea Bobic had another double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. The Cougars will compete in their final regular season game of the season on Saturday, Feb. 23 as they travel to Glendale for a 5:30 p.m. game.

Hart graduate Amanda Sreden also had a double-double in COC's fourth 100+ point game of the year, with 16 points and 10 rebounds. As a team, the Cougars shot 52.2 percent from the field, but only shot 70.7 percent from the free throw line. COC returns home for the final home game of the regular season as they host Santa Monica College on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 5:30 p.m.

Blcokmon shot 4-of-7 from the field and was 6-7 from the free throw line as she scored a season high 15 points. The Cougars saw every player on the roster score at lease two points in the game, including a game high 18 points from Kelly O'Linn. Bobic contributed 10 points and 10 rebounds, for her second consecutive double-double. COC will travel to Valley on Saturday, Feb. 16 for a 5:30 p.m. game.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Leading scorer Andrea Bobic scored 17 points and had 13 rebounds as the Cougars trampled Bakersfield College, 97-50, for Canyons third consecutive win. The Cougars spread their scoring evenly over the two halves, scoring 50 and 47, respectively, shooting 56.1 percent over the course of the game. Britney Bradley had 10 points and 10 assists, for her second contest with double digit assits. Sophomore Kelly O'Linn had a game high 24 points as she shot 9-of-11 from the field and was perfect from the 3-point line (2-2) and the free throw line (4-4). Forward LaTreshe Jones tied her season high of 12 points, while adding five rebounds and three steals. COC improves to 17-8, 7-1 in conference, take this weekend off and host West L.A. on Thursday, Feb. 13 for a 5:30 p.m. match-up.
2-2-08 Cougars Rout Citrus, Bradley Tallies Double-Double

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - The 15th-ranked Cougars swept the Citrus season series on Saturday night with a 95-76 routing of the Owls at Cougar Cage. Canyons had previously won the first contest versus the Owls, 105-89, at Citrus College on Jan. 9. Britney Bradley scored 17 points and dished out 11 assists in the Cougars second consecutive win. With 10:12 left in the first half, Citrus tied the game for the fourth time at 15-all, but COC went on 25-12 scoring run to close the half, building up their biggest lead of the second half, 42-25. Following the intermission, it was all Cougars again. Citrus came as close as 13 with 12:12 left, but Canyons would not allow them to get any closer, leading by as many as 29. Andrea Bobic led all scorers with 23 points, and Kelly O’Linn added 20 points. The Cougars travel to Bakersfield on Wednesday, Feb. 6 for a 5:30 p.m. match-up.

Bobic's double-double is her seventh in a row and her 18th consecutive game with 10 or more points. Charity Smith also recorded her own double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. As a team, the Cougars were below their scoring average of (81.5 ppg overall, 95.0 ppg WSC) as they shot 44.4 percent from the field, but held the Vaqueros to only 50 points in the game, 17 alone in the first half. The Cougars remain at home this Saturday as they host Citrus to start the second half of WSC play.

The defeat ends the Cougars unblemished record in Western State Conference games this season and the five-game win streak the team was riding. 1-23-08 Cougars Lose 17-Point Second Half Lead, But Still Come Up With Win

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - College of the Canyons had a scare on Wednesday night as the team blew a 17-point second half lead but three last second free throws from sophomore Kelly O'Linn helped the Cougars pull out their fifth consecutive victory against Valley College. Following a first half that saw COC hit nine 3-pointers, the Cougars struggled to handle Valley's offense that produced 61 second-half points. At the 17 minute mark of the second half, COC led, 50-33, but the Monarch's went on an 22-8 run that included three consecutive 3-pointers from Valley's Mariam Asaryan. With the Canyons' lead cut down to four points, 58-54, with 10:30 to go in the game, COC could not shake Valley as they traded baskets and got to the line and made free throws. With only two minutes left in the game, freshman Britney Bradley hit two quick jumpers to place the Cougars on top 86-79 and COC 9-of-10 free throws down the stretch for the win. O'Linn led the team in scoring with 22 points (11-of-14 from the free throw line), while Andrea Bobic had her third double-double in four games with 19 points and 16 rebounds.
1-19-08 Andrea Bobic Makes A School Record Eight 3-Pointers In Win Against West L.A.

CULVER CITY, Calif. – All-Western State Conference guard Andrea Bobic recorded her fourth consecutive double-double on Saturday night as the Cougars remained perfect in conference play with a 65-51 win at West L.A. College. Bobic shot 63 percent (12-of-19) from the field and became the all-time leader in 3-pointers made in a game after she went 8-of-13 (62 percent). Last season, Bobic hit seven 3-pointers against Santa Monica, tying her with three other former Cougars who had scored seven in a game. Two other Cougars had double-doubles in the win -- freshman guard Britney Bradley scored 14 points and a season high 13 assists and Charity Smith grabbed 10 rebounds and 18 points. The Cougars host Valley on Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 5:30 p.m.
1-14-08 Cougars Pounce Bakersfield In Conference Home Opener

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - Freshman center Charity Smith poured in 15 points and 14 rebounds in the College of the Canyons women’s basketball team’s Western State Conference home opener, as they routed Bakersfield College, 102-55, on Saturday night at the Cougar Cage. COC’s 47-point win was the second largest margin of victory for the team this season and the third 100+ point game of the season for Herrick and his team. The team routed Taft College by 48 points, 115-67, on Dec. 5, 2007. The Cougars (12-7, 2-0) started the game opening a 21-2 lead, while the Renegades were only able to score two points on a set of free throws from starter Jacquelyn Rodriquez. Bakersfield would not produce a field goal until halfway through the half on a layup by Rodriquez, which sparked a 10-4 Renegade run closing the Cougars lead to 13, 25-12. The Renegades (2-15, 0-1) would come as close as 15 points, 27-12, but a late 10-5 run by the Cougars, including two back-to-back layups from Smith, gave Canyons a 46-28 advantage at the break. After the intermission, COC opened the game even more as they scored eight straight points to take a 26-point lead, 54-28. The Renegades got back into their own rhythm and neutralized the COC offense with six unanswered points of their own to cut down on the Cougar lead. It wasn’t until halfway through the second half that COC really started to play its own game as the team built up a 40+ point lead and never looked back. Every player on the COC team scored, as the team was led by freshman guard Brittany Bradley who had 19 points and dished out nine assists. Andrea Bobic recorded her second consecutive double-double with 16 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and four steals. The Cougars have now won 14 WSC games in a row, with their last loss dating back to Feb. 18, 2006, when the team lost in the final game of the regular season, 72-64, against L.A. Valley. COC will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 19 as they travel to West L.A. College for a 5:30 p.m. game.
1-9-08 Bobic Leads Cougars To First Conference Win

GLENDORA, Calif. - Sophomore starter Andrea Bobic scored 23 points and pulled down 19 rebounds to help the No. 11 Cougars win their conference opener at Citrus College, 105-89, on Wednesday night. The win marked Canyons fourth 100+ point game of the season. COC dominated the first half, leading by as many as 13 points as the Cougars blazed Citrus going 18-of-29 from the field (62.1 percent) and was 5-of-8 from 3-point land (62.5 percent). The scoring slowed down for COC in the second half as Citrus tied the game at 50 with 16:56 left. COC came back to tie it again at 61, 63, 66 and 71. Citrus’ Julianna Avila fouled a COC player and the Citrus bench received a technical that turned into four points for the Cougars as Ivory Blockmon made all four free throws, and started a 27-4 run for COC that preserved a Cougar win. COC went to the free throw line 48 times and made 40 shots. Brittany Bradley was 15-of-17 from the line and Blockmon went 9-of-10. Bradley led all scorers with 26 points and nine assists and Charity Smith had 13 points. The Cougars are now 16-1 when facing Citrus. The Cougars return to action on Saturday, Jan. 12, for their first conference home game against Bakersfield. Tip is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

The Cougars fell behind by two points at the break, but turned on the heat in the second, scoring 44 points in the final period for the win. COC was paced by freshman guard Brittany Bradley who was 8-of-12 from the field for 17 points, three steals and six assists in 33 minutes of play. Andrea Bobic (12 points and 10 rebounds) and Charity Smith (14 points and 10 rebounds) recorded double-doubles in the win. COC will travel to Citrus for its first Western State Conference game of the season on Wednesday, Jan. 10 at 5:30 p.m.

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – The College of the Canyons Cougars struggled to beat a team they had beat by 45 points just three days earlier as they nabbed a 67-60 victory against El Camino College on Tuesday night at the Cougar Cage. COC couldn’t hold off a pesky El Camino team that came within five points, 27-22 at the 3:42 mark of the first half. The Cougars went on an 11-3 run to close the half and took a 38-25 lead into the break. The Warriors opened up the second half with a 13-6 run that placed them behind by six points, 44-38. The Cougars continued to struggle on offense as El Camino tied the game twice at 50 and 52. El Camino took its first lead with 2:26 left in the game, 57-56, but COC scored on a back-to-back Andrea Bobic 3-pointer and a layup from Kelly O’Linn, to help the Cougars win the second game against El Camino in the last three days. Charity Smith recorded a double-double in the win with 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Bobic had 17 points and eight rebounds, and O’Linn contributed 14 points. COC will remain at home as they host No. 8 San Francisco on Saturday, Dec. 22 at 5 p.m.

COSTA MESA, Calif. - College of the Canyons started off the Orange Coast Classic with a rout of El Camino, 87-42, in the first-round game for both teams. Kelly O’Linn scored 28 points in the win on a 12-for-17 shooting afternoon, while Andrea Bobic and Charity Smith tallied double-doubles for the team, with 16 points and 11 rebounds and 14 points and 10 boards respectively. In the second game, COC lost a 39-34 lead against the No. 10 team in the state as they watched Saddleback score 45 points in the second half. The Gauchos held Smith to only four points and nine rebounds, but Bobic scored 21 points while Brittany Bradley added 25 points, three rebounds and two assists. In the final game, Canyons rebounded with a win against Cerritos, 71-68. The Cougars were behind by one point at the halftime break, but turned around a 33 percent shooting percentage in the first half to 50 percent in the second half. Bobic led the team with 20 points and eight rebounds, and O’Linn and Bradley contributed 15 points each. Bobic and Bradley were named All-Tournament for their efforts during the three-game series.

OXNARD, Calif. – College of the Canyons fell behind early in the opening minutes of the first half, but played typical fast break Cougar basketball to end any ideas of a Condor comeback, to win, 88-65, on Tuesday night. Canyons opened the game falling behind by 13 points as the Condors opened a 28-15 lead over COC. Oxnard and Canyons battled it out in the for about eight minutes, which include two ties, but COC finished the half to go on a 8-3 run and was up 46-40 over the Condors. The second half was all Cougars, as the team went up by 27 points twice. Canyons shot 45 percent in the second, down from 48 percent in the first half. Charity Smith scored a game-high 22 points, 15 of which came in the first half, and had 19 rebounds. By the end of the first, Smith already had a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Freshman Brittany Bradley tallied nine points and 12 rebounds, and Kelly O’Linn and Andrea Bobic contributed 15 and 13 points respectively.

The win evens Canyons’ record at 3-3 on the season. The Cougars led from the jump as COC opened up a 35-4 lead at the nine-minute mark of the first half. Taft would come as close as 18 points two time at the start of the second half, but never could get a grip on the Cougar lead. COC was led by Kelly O’Linn with 22 points and three Cougars tallied double-doubles – Andrea Bobic had 21 points and 16 boards, Brittany Bradley recorded 21 points and 10 assists and Charity Smith scored 16 points and 10 rebounds.
11-20-07 Cougars Suffer Largest Defeat Of The Season With 95-57 Loss To Mt. SAC

WALNUT, Calif. - The Cougars dropped a game, 95-57, at Mt. SAC for the largest margin of defeat (38 points) thus far this season. Canyons shot 38 percent from the field, while Mt. SAC scorched the court shooting 47 percent. The Mountie’s Blaire Egardo could not be contained by the COC as she scored a game-high 29 points on a 10-of-22 night that also included five rebounds and three steals in 25 minutes of play. For the Cougars, starting guard Brittany Bradley notched 16 points and three rebounds. As a team COC committed 18 turnovers and was outrebounded 19 to 62.
