– Sophomore forward Ashley Mason has signed a letter of intent with San Diego Christian College. She becomes the third women’s basketball player to sign a letter of intent from the 2009-10 squad, joining Ashley Wakefield who signed with The University of the Pacific and Joslynn Frazier who will travel to Grand Canyon University next year.

Two College of the Canyons women’s basketball players have signed letters of intent with four-year universities. Sophomore guard Ashley Wakefield has signed with the University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif., and sophomore forward Joslynn Frazier has signed with Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Ariz.

– College of the Canyons women’s basketball player Ashley Wakefield was named California Community College Women's Basketball Coaches Association (CCCWBCA) Co-Player of the Year for her efforts during the 2009-2010 season. Wakefield is the first COC women’s basketball player ever to receive the state’s top honor. She shares the honor with Fresno City College’s Sumiya Darden.

– College of the Canyons women’s basketball team collected four all-conference awards following the Cougar’s perfect 12-0 conference season as well as a sweep of the conference’s top two honors in Coach of the Year for Greg Herrick and Most Valuable Player for sophomore guard Ashley Wakefield.

2-27-10 Cougars Can't Hit Free Throws In Playoff Loss

The College of the Canyon women's basketball team shot 16-of-30 from the free throw line on Saturday night in a loss to L.A. Trade Tech, 68-66, in the Southern California Regional Playoffs. The loss also marked the end of COC's 19-game win streak that dated back to Dec. 12, 2009, when COC handled Mt. SAC. Trade Tech built up a 16-point lead in the second half, but the Cougars cut the lead to five with about four minutes left in the game. With a bothersome defense, Canyons made it a game in the final few minutes with key fouls and forcing turnovers. Trade Tech held its ground, going 8-of-8 from the line in the last two minutes, lifting them narrowly past COC. Ashley Wakefield led the Cougars with 15 points, nine rebounds, three assists and three steals. Sophomore Joslynn Frazier had another double-double with 10 point and 11 rebounds and freshman Dominique Turner turned in 13 points. COC finished the season with a 22-5 record and 12-0 Western State Conference, South Division record.

2-22-10 Cougars To Travel To L.A. Trade Tech For First Round Playoff Game

– College of the Canyons women's basketball team earned a No. 11 seed in the Southern California Regional Playoffs and will travel to No. 6 Los Angeles Trade Tech on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m.

2-20-10 Cougars Stay Perfect In Conference Games After Taking Care Of Citrus

The College of the Canyons women's basketball team finished undeafeted in conference play for the second year in a row with a 78-61 victory over Citrus on Saturday night. Joslynn Frazier led the Cougars with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Also scoring in double digits were Samantha Cross with 13 and Ashley Wakefield with 11 points and 9 rebounds. The Cougars will await their playoff opponent, which will be announced late Monday afternoon.

2-17-10 Canyons Makes It 18 Games Straight

The College of the Canyons women’s basketball team remained undefeated in conference after beating Glendale 80-66 on Wednesday night. Dominique Turner came off the bench to score 22 points and Joslynn Frazier added 21 to help the Cougars extend their winning streak to 18 games. Ashley Wakefield continued to dominate the hardwood with another double-double, scoring 13 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. The Cougars will face Citrus College on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 5 p.m., where they will have the opportunity to finish undefeated in conference play for the second year in a row. The game against the Owls marks the last regular season home game for College of the Canyons. In honor of the sophomore players and their families, Saturday will be Sophomore Night, where prior to the start of the game the second-year players will be recognized.   

2-13-10 Cougars Earn Fifth Consecutive Conference Title

College of the Canyons defeated Santa Monica College, 85-73, on Saturday night to clinch its fifth consecutive Western State Conference, South Division title, and 12th title for the program. Ashley Wakefield scored 23 points and a career high 25 rebounds, to lead five players in double figures. The Cougars maintain a three-game lead over Santa Monica with two games to play. COC will travel to Glendale College on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 5 p.m.

2-10-10 Cougars Notch 16th Conseutive Win

College of the Canyons Kelli Lewis and Ashley Wakefield combined for 47 points on Wednesday night, helping COC to their 16th consecutive win and a 85-53 victory against L.A. Valley. COC improved to 9-0 in the Western State Conference, South division, with just three more conference games left in the season. The Cougars only trailed in the first three minutes, as the Monarchs took at two-point lead, but the Cougars wouldn't let that last long, building up a 32-point lead to end the game. Ashley Wakefield had another double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds and Lewis had 23 points and five assists. The Cougars travel to Santa Monica on Saturday, Feb. 13 for a 5 p.m. match up.

2-9-10 Cougars To Participate in Pink Zone

The College of the Canyons women’s basketball team will participate in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Pink Zone® tonight, by wearing pink shoelaces in honor of breast cancer awareness. The women’s team will be hosting L.A. Valley College Wednesday night at 5 p.m. in the Cougar Cage. Admission for the game is $5 at the door.

2-6-10 Cougars Make It 15 Straight

The Cougars won their 15th consecutive game on Saturday night, destroying Bakersfield 93-50. COC held Bakersfield to 21 points in the first half and nine field goals, to easily take care of the visiting Renegades. Kelli Lewis turned in a game high 21 points and seven assists. Ashley Wakefield had another double-double (15 points and 10 rebounds) and Ashley Mason had 20 points off the bench. The Cougars will host Valley on Wednesday, Feb. 10 at 5 p.m.

1-30-10 Canyons Cruises Past West L.A.

Four College of the Canyons women's basketball players score in double figures to lead the Cougars to their seventh conference victory on Saturday night, 91-43, over West L.A. The win marks the 14th consecutive win for COC this season. Kelli Lewis led the team with 21 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Ashley Wakefield tallied her 17th double-double of the year with 15 points and 12 rebounds. COC returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 6, as they host Bakersfield College at 5 p.m.

, Calif - With an outstanding 28 points and 18 rebounds, sophomore Ashley Wakefield drove the Cougars to an 87-68 victory over Citrus College on Wednesday night, where Canyons took sole possession of first place in the Western State Conference, South Division. After leaving the court at halftime with only a slight 9-point lead, the Cougars came back in complete control and dominated the remainder of the half, upsetting the Owls by giving them their first conference defeat. Other big contributors included Kelli Lewis and Dominique Turner with 15 points apiece, Joslynn Frazier with 14 points and 18 rebounds, and Ashley Mason with 17 rebounds. The Cougars will travel to Culver City to take on West L.A. Saturday, Jan. 30 at 5 p.m. 

1-23-10 Cougars Hold Off Late Glendale Surge In Fifth Conference Victory

The College of the Canyons women's basketball team overcame a second half surge from Glendale College where the Vaqueros cut the Cougars' lead to single digits, but COC dug in and defeated the Vaqueros 83-55 on Saturday night. The Cougars were in control most of the night against the visiting Vaqueros, except for a short amount of time in the second half when the lead was cut to eight. Dominique Turner had 16 points off the bench to top all Cougar scorers and Ashley Wakefield had 15 points and eight rebounds in the game. The win improved the Cougars to 5-0, to keep pace with Citrus who is also 5-0 in conference. The Cougars and Owls will meet on Wednesday, Jan. 27 in a battle of the unbeatens at 5 p.m.

1-14-10 Wakefield And Cougars Run Over Bakersfield

College of the Canyons women's basketball team improved to 2-0 in Western State Conference, South Division, play on Wednesday night with a 88-62 win against Bakersfield College. Ashley Wakefield had another stellar game, turning in 15 points, 19 rebounds and 10 assists for her first career triple-double and Joslynn Frazier led the team with 28 points. The Cougars will travel to L.A. Valley College on Saturday, Jan. 10, at 5:30 p.m.

1-8-10 Wakefield's Season High Points Takes Care Of Taft

Ashley Wakefield scored a season high 30 points against Taft College on Friday evening, helping the Cougars easily defeat Taft, 82-57, in a non-conference match up. Sophomore Wakefield exceeded her previous season high of 25 that she scored against Chaffey College on Dec. 18, 2009. Wakefield also added 13 rebounds for her 12th double-double of the season. Ashley Mason had another great game off the bench with 14 points and five rebounds. COC will return to its conference season on Wednesday, Jan. 13 as they travel to Bakersfield for a 5 p.m. contest.

1-6-10 COC Opens Conference Season Victory Against West L.A.

The Cougars had the game in their hands from the start of the conference home opener against West L.A. on Wednesday night as COC built a 42-24 halftime lead to only keep the pressure on the Wildcats and win 81-58. COC had a balanced attack with five players scoring in double figures, including 14 points each for Dominique Turner and Ashley Mason, who came off the bench. Joslynn Frazier took down 15 rebounds to go with her 14 points and Samantha Cross also added 14 points in the Cougars' win. COC will take on Bakersfield College on the road on Wednesday, Jan. 13 at 5:30 p.m.

12-30-09 Lewis Explodes For 18 Points Against El Camino

Kelli Lewis' 18 points led four Cougars in double figures over El Camino, 77-66, on Wednesday night. Ashley Wakefield had 16 points and 14 rebounds, Samantha Cross finished with 16 and Dominique Turner chipped in with 13 points and six assists. It was the sixth straight win for the Cougars before opening Western State Conference play next Wednesday at home versus West Los Angeles College.

12-22-09 Wakefield's 21 Fuels Win Against Oxnard

The College of the Canyons Cougars won their fifth straight game behind a strong 45-19 first half effort at Oxnard, 78-48. Ashley Wakefield scored 21 points, going 9-of- 11 from the foul line, and had 12 rebounds. Joslynn Frazier's 12, Samantha Cross' 12, and Dominque Turner's 10 led the Cougars' scoring parade. The Cougars will put their modest win streak on the line on Wednesday, December 30, versus El Camino at home.

12-12-09 Cougars Shock Mounties In Non-Conference Game

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. -
The College of the Canyons women's basketball team handed fourth-ranked Mt. SAC a big loss on Saturday evening, 73-68. The win broke COC's 15-game losing streak to the Mounties that lasted seven years. The last time the Cougars won against the Mounties was on Dec. 20, 2002, when COC beat Mt. SAC 76-72 at the Cougar Cage. The win also marked 18-year head coach Greg Herrick's 400th win as the College of the Canyons women's basketball coach. COC built up a 24-6 lead in the first 10 minutes of the first half, only to see that lead swallowed up by the Mounties who took a 35-22 lead at halftime. Sophomore Ashley Wakefield added 12 points in the second half of the game, after being held to just six points in the first, to keep pace with the Mounties. COC finally broke away around the five-minute mark and kept the lead until the end of the game. Kelli Lewis lead all scorers with 22 points and eight assists and Ashley Wakefield chipped in 18 points and 14 rebounds in the Cougars' win. COC will head to the Coast Christmas Classic on Friday, Dec. 18.

12-4-09 Cougars Fall In Last Seconds

The Moorpark Raiders women's basketball team hit a last second shot on Friday evening to defeat the Cougars, 60-59, in the final second of the non-conference match up. Sophomores Ashley Wakefield and Joslynn Frazier each chipped in 21 points and 11 rebounds in the Cougars loss. COC will travel to Mt. SAC on Saturday, Dec. 12 for a 5:30 p.m. game.
