Four Cougars Named All-Conference

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – In the wake of the College of the Canyons women’s basketball run in the 2011 California Community College Athletic Association Women’s Basketball Playoffs, four team members were honored for their performances during the conference season.

Canyons had three players on the first-team — freshman guard Tinky Dahte, freshman forward Jazzmyn Davis and sophomore guard Kelli Lewis.

Sophomore guard Dominique Turner was named honorable mention.

“Kelli Lewis, Jazzmyn Davis and Tinky Dahte were deserving of First-Team All-WSC, as was Dominique Turner as an honorable mention selection,” said head COC women’s basketball coach Greg Herrick. “Our 11-1 record in conference play and the consistency of each player's performance during that time were indicative of consideration for these awards.”

According to Herrick, Lewis received the most votes by the coaches of any player in the conference during the voting for All-WSC, and was the runner-up for conference MVP.

Dahte led the team in field-goal percentage during the Western State Conference, South Division season, making 67 of 144 attempts for a 47-percent field-goal percentage. Her 13.7 ppg and 4.6 rpg made her one of the most consistent players on the team.

Davis was the Cougars’ leading scorer during conference play with 18.2 ppg. and ranked second in scoring average in the conference, trailing only the Conference Player of the Year, Citrus College’s Ariel Marsh, who had 22.3 ppg. The Cougars’ forward averaged a double-double with 12.5 rpg and tallied nine double-doubles during the 12-game WSC season.

Lewis, the only sophomore to be named First-Team All-Conference, was COC’s 3-point specialist. The guard hit 37 shots from behind the arc, including a school-record nine 3-pointers against West L.A. College on Jan. 5. She was the second-leading scorer with 16.1 ppg and 6.3 apg.

Turner, Canyons’ assist leader (6.4), scored 9.6 ppg. She had her best game against Citrus, when she had 14 points and 11 assists in 31 minutes of work on Jan. 26.

COC will travel to San Bernardino Valley College (27-3) for a third-round regional game on Wednesday, March 2 at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, March 5, the winner of the COC/San Bernardino contest will take on the winner of the postseason matchup between Pasadena City College and Mt. San Antonio College.
