5-17-08 All Six Cougars Earn All-State Honors; Two Named JC All-America Athletes

CERRITOS, Calif. - The College of the Canyons track and field team had two stellar days at the California Community College State Championships on May 16-17 at Cerritos College. The Cougars sent six athletes to the meet and all six came back with All-State honors in their respective events, including two All-America honorees. Distance runner Alfredo Coronado had the highest finish of the team. Coronado, who was also deemed an All-America honoree, ran a personal-best 3:53.80 in the 1,500-meter run for second place. Justin Skinner also earned All-America accolades in the decathlon with a third-place performance with a personal-record 6,423 points. Also for the men, Ismael Samano and Tyler Woodard record sixth-place finishes in the 10,000-meter run (33:34.66) and pole vault (14-6) respectively. Melissa Hampton competed in two events – the high jump and the heptathlon. She finished in seventh place in the high jump with a personal record of 1.60 meters (5-3), earning All-State honors. She also came in 11th in the heptathlon with 3,355 points. Brittany Uhl scored 4,043 points in the heptathlon for seventh place.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Six College of the Canyons track and field members earned a spot at the State Championships next Friday and Saturday at Cerritos College. The men’s team finished in 15th place and the women in 17th place at the SoCal Championships. Sophomore distance runner Alfredo Coronado had the top performance for the Cougars. Coronado finished in second place in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:57.96, only narrowly losing to Steven Calise of El Camino by .53 of a second. Also in the running events, Ismael Samano came in sixth in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 32:45.94. In the decathlon, Justin Skinner scored 5,989 points to finish fourth and Tyler Woodward cleared 4.60 meters (15-1) in the pole vault to advance to next weekend’s championships. For the women, Melissa Hampton leaped1.55 meters (5-1) in the high jump to finish in fifth place and Brittany Uhl scored 3,916 points for sixth place. The six athletes will travel to Cerritos College on May 16-17 for the State Championships.
4-4-08 Cougar Track And Field Successfully End Regular Season With Wins

GLENDALE, Calif. – COC finished off the regular season with a sweep by the men’s and women’s track team on Friday afternoon at the quad meet at Glendale College. The men easily won with 84.5 points and the women narrowly beat Glendale for first place, 76-68. Canyons had 11 first-place finishes sprinkled throughout both teams. The women were led by multi-event Brittany Uhl, who leaped 5.05 meters (16-7) in the long jump, 10.52 meters (34-6) in the triple, ran a 15.90 110-meter hurdles, and went 1:07.19 in the 400-meter hurdles for her four top finishes. In the field events, Dana Vaughn was first in the shot put with a throw of 9.86 meters (32-4) and hurled the discus 30.38 meters (99-8). On the men’s side, Chris Powell dominated the jumping events as he cleared 1.88 meters (6-2) and jumped 13.84 meters (35-5) in the triple jump for his two first-place finishes. Sophomore distance runner Alfredo Coronado turned in first-place performances in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:08.29 and in the 3,000-meter run (9:03.31). Justin Skinner also finished at the top in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.42. COC will send a select number of athletes to the Mt. SAC Relays this Saturday, April 12, before heading to the WSC Prelims on Saturday, April 19.
3-7-08 Men's Team Tops Field, Women Nab Second

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – The College of the Canyons men’s track and field team recorded another first-place finish at the Western State Conference No. 3 Meet at COC on Friday afternoon, beating second-place Bakersfield by 52.5 points. The Cougars posted 90.5 points, Bakersfield had 38, third-place Cuesta recorded 37.5 and Oxnard had 17. The women’s team came in second with 57 points behind Bakersfield who posted 84 points. Paul Ned had two second-place performances in the 100-meter dash (11.02) and the 200-meter dash (22.41), while Derrick Quals came in first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.90. Sophomore Chris Powell was the big performer for the men as he earned top finishes in the high jump (1.88 meters/6-2) and triple jump (12.98 meters/42-7), while nabbing third place in the long jump with a leap of 6.35 meters (20-10). Also on the field, Matt Oakden cleared 4.12 meters (13-6) and David Holmes hurled the shot put 12.40 meters (40-8), to win their respective events. For the women, Brittany Uhl finished in first in the triple and the 400-meter hurdles (1:06.04) and second in the long jump (4.55 meters/14-11) and 100-meter hurdles (15.98). Freshman Caitlyn Ramirez also took home first in the 400-meter run with a time of 1:04.6. The Cougars will return to action on Friday, March 14 for the two-day Bakersfield College Relays.
2-23-08 Coronado Posts Top Times In The State In Two Events

CERRITOS, Calif. – College of the Canyons track and field team competed well this weekend at the no team scoring Cerritos Invite on Saturday afternoon, as sophomore distance runner Alfredo Coronado posted state-best times in the 1,500-meter and 5,000-meter runs. Coronado finished in first place in both events, bringing in times of 3:59.81 and 14:50.71 respectively. The Cougars, who excelled in the distance events, also saw sophomore Ismael Samano take second place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 12:02. For the women, Brittany Uhl earned two sixth-place finishes and one eighth-place performance. Uhl was sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 10.23 meters (33-6 ¾), sixth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:10.53 and eighth in the pole vault after clearing 2.59 meters (8-6). The women also excelled in the relays, finishing in fourth place in the 4x800-meter relay with a time of 10:44.13 and seventh in the 4x100-meter relay, finishing in 55.01. The Cougars return to action on on Friday, Feb. 29 as they host the second WSC meet of the season at 2 p.m.
2-14-08 Cougars Come Out Swinging In First Conference Meet

MOORPARK, Calif. - The COC men's track and field team finished in first place, by six points, while the women held strong in second place, at the first conference meet of the season at Moorpark College on Thursday afternoon. The men dominated with eight first-place performances and the women had five, grabbing a majority in the field events. Sprinter Chris McClover topped the field in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.10, the 200-meter dash (23.82) and then anchored the final leg of the first-place 4x100-meter relay. Jumper Chris Powell won the long and triple jump with distances of 6.56 meters (21- 6 1/2) and 13.11 meters (43-1/2) respectively. Distance runner Alfredo Coronado was also a double winner in the meet, taking the top spot in the 1,500-meter run (4:17.42) and the 800-meter run (2:04.64). Coronado's cross country teammate Ismael Samano earned his own top honor in the 3,000-meter run in a time of 9:08.84, clipping second-place finisher, COC's Stephen Kent, by four seconds. For the women, freshman Brittany Uhl and Kaylie Peters were the big winners, finishing in first place in two events each. Uhl won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:09.07 and cleared 2.59 meters (8-6) in the pole vault. Peters had her way in the throwing events, taking first in the discus with a throw of 27.98 (91-9), beating the second-place finisher by more than five meters (16 feet), and the hammer throw after hurling 35.40 meters (116-2), leading second place by about 15 meters (50 feet). COC returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 23 to compete in the Falcon Invite at Cerritos College, home of this year's state championships. |
