On Wednesday April 1st, 63 counselors, career advisors, and administrators from College of the Canyons and the William S. Hart Union High School District took part in the annual College of the Canyons “Counselors in Industry” Day. This event was funded by the SB70 Community Collaborative Grant which provides funds for professional development activities.
The day began with a welcome session and explanation of the day. From there the attendees were broken up into 8 separate groups and transported to site visits at businesses throughout the Santa Clarita and San Fernando Valley. Some of the businesses that were visited included: The Center for Applied Competitive Technologies (CACT), the City of Santa Clarita, Los Angeles Fire Station #126, The Tournament Players Club at Valencia, The Los Angeles Dodgers, DreamWorks Animation Studio, Six Flags Magic Mountain, St. Jude Medical, and the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
After returning from the various site visits, the attendees attended a luncheon session which included an outstanding keynote address from Dr. Barbara Nemko. Dr. Nemko has been the County Superintendent of schools in Napa since 1997. Prior to that Dr. Nemko served as the curriculum director for the Napa County Office of Education from 1991 – 1997. Dr. Nemko is a big proponent of career technical education and the importance of exposing career pathways for students who do not have, or plan on obtaining, a 4-year college degree. Dr. Nemko also serves as co-chair on 3 statewide committees including The Workplace and Business Linkage Subcommittees of the Master Plan and the School Accountability Report Committee.
After lunch, the counselors, advisors and administrators broke into groups by school site for an afternoon work session. The groups re-visited and revised career technical education goals that were laid out at last Octobers Career Technical Education Awareness Day. The groups also identified one main goal to accomplish during the spring semester at each of their school sites.
