On Friday October 10th, 2008 more than 160 instructors, counselors, career advisors, and administrators attended the 1st annual Career Technical Education Awareness Day at College of the Canyons. The goal of the day was to increase awareness to local educators on the importance of career technical education.
The day started of with a continental breakfast and a opening session featuring three speakers from local businesses. The speakers were, Chef Daniel Otto; Executive Chef at The Oaks Grille at TPC, Henry Rios; Owner of SCV Import and Domestic Automotive, and Mickie Schuerger; a College of the Canyons Nursing program graduate. The opening session speakers shared their specific career pathways with the audience as well as the importance of career technical education and how it helped them get to where they are today.
After the opening session the attendees broke up into 8 groups and each group attended 3 separate breakout sessions where they listed to a panel of employers from various career technical education industry sectors. In each breakout session attendees were able to hear each employers success story, career pathway, and what they look for in employees.
The luncheon session featured keynote speaker Sharron Huntsman from the California EDGE campaign. Sharron addressed the audience on the critical role of career technical education in addressing California's looming workforce crisis. After the keynote address the attendees broke up into work groups by each schools site. A "Cafe to Go" style workshop was help were questions were asked to the group and future CTE goals were discussed and written down by each school site.
