FAQs
for the Blackboard Course Management System
I am having some problems with
Blackboard. Is there anything I can try on my
own?
Sometimes, one Internet browser
will have problems with Blackboard while another
will work great. If you are having
problems that are not proving easy to solve, you
may want to consider downloading another
Internet browser. Below are the links to
the most common browsers:
How do I log on to
Blackboard?
http://bb.canyons.edu
to log on. Log in
information: USER NAME: The seven digits of your
Student ID number (NOT your Social Security
number). PASSWORD: student
I am enrolled in class.
Why can't I log into Blackboard?
After you
register for an online or hybrid course it may
take 24-48 hours for your Blackboard account to
be created. Please continue attempt logging into
the course. If after 48 hours you are still
unable to obtain access, please contact your
instructor.
How do I find out my
User Name and Password?
Your User Name
is your seven-digit student ID number.
Your password when the class begins is
“student” (without the quotation marks).
How do I change my
password?
Go to TOOLS and select “Personal
Information.” Then click on the “Change
password” tab. After re-entering your password,
click “submit” to finalize the change.
I forgot my password.
What do I do?
If you have forgotten your password
you will have to contact your instructor to have
it changed. They will re-set it to “student” or
to another word decided upon. Then follow the
directions above to change the word to something
you will remember.
I am in Blackboard, and
I don’t see my class listed, or it says “no
courses found.” What do I do?
First, make
sure you are registered in the class. You may do
this online or by contacting Admissions and
Records or your instructor. Although many
courses are available on the first day of the
semester, instructors may have chosen another
date to begin the class. Check the online class
schedule to find the first day of class.
If you know you
are in the course, and it still does not appear
online, please contact your instructor. In rare
circumstances the class has not been made
available to students, and your instructor must
“open” the class.
There is a
chance your course is not being offered in
Blackboard. Please read your instructor’s
orientation letter. Some instructors use
CourseCompass, ETUDES, or programs on CD. The
information should be in the orientation letter.
How do I send files to
my instructor?
Your
instructor will tell you how to submit your
assignments. Some will prefer them sent as an
attachment to an email. Others will insist that
you send the assignments via digital dropbox on
the Blackboard website. The digital dropbox is
located in the TOOLS section.
When using the digital
dropbox, do I have to send the assignment as an
attachment, or can I cut-and-paste my
assignment into the Comments box?
You will
have previously saved the assignment as a file.
Attach it in the appropriate space. The Comments
box is for adding a description of the file.
How does the instructor
read the files in my digital dropbox?
Your instructor
cannot read the files that are in your digital
dropbox. If you have “added” the files, they are
there for your eyes only. You must “send” the
files to your instructor for him/her to be able
to read them.
How do I know if my
instructor received the file that I sent through
the digital dropbox?
If you have
sent your instructor the file correctly, a
screen will pop up that states:
|
Receipt: Success
test The file has been sent to the selected users
with role of Instructor.
|
I sent my instructor a file in my digital
dropbox, but he can’t find it. What’s wrong?
There are two
buttons in the digital dropbox; “add file” and
“send file.” Adding a file merely
deposits in your digital dropbox for
safekeeping. For your instructor to see the file
you must send the file. Your instructor
is not able to look into your dropbox for the
assignment.
Another reason
your instructor may not be able to receive the
assignment is that you may have included a #
sign (i.e. “Assignment #1”). The HTML code is
not acceptable to Blackboard, and your file will
not be sent.
What is my Blackboard
email address?
You do not have an email address
when your account is set up in Blackboard. A
generic student@canyons
is provided to all students as a fill-in when
your account is set up, so please change your
email address in Blackboard when you log in the
first time .
How do I change my email
address in Blackboard?
Go to TOOLS and select “Personal
Information.” Then click on the “Edit personal
information” tab. Enter your new email address
here. Click “submit” when finished to finalize
the change. You may also change your email
address in the My Institution tab.
How does the Blackboard
email system work?
To send
email, go to the COMMUNICATION tab and click on
“Send Email.” Select the participants you want
to send the email to (instructor only, all class
participants, or individual participants),
create the email and click “submit.” Email will
be delivered to the email address on file in
Blackboard.
How do I send an email
to my instructor only, through Blackboard?
Here is an “Instructor only”
button on the Blackboard email site.
When I try to print my
Blackboard screen all I get is the menu. How do
I print the information frame?
Place your mouse in the information
frame before you open the print menu. To be sure
you are printing the correct frame, select
“print preview” before printing the item.
Is Blackboard available
24 hours a day?
Yes. Blackboard, however, shuts
down for routine maintenance periodically. This
usually happens at 4:00 am on a Sunday morning,
and is not a common occurrence, so it should not
affect you.
Is student technical assistance available for
Blackboard?
Student
tech support is available Monday-Thursday 8:00
am – 8:00 pm; Friday 8:00 am – 1:00 pm; and
Saturday 9:00 am – 1:00 pm. Email will be
replied to within 24 business hours. If you are
having problems within your course with
assignments, tests, and the like, please contact
your instructor. Email address:
bbsupport@canyons.edu. Telephone:
661-362-3344.
Is there a student information manual for
Blackboard?
The
student manual is available in two areas on the
Blackboard website; along the top banner,
identified as “help.” This appears on every
Blackboard page. You may also find the student
manual in the TOOLS tab, listed as “student
manual.”

How do I get Blackboard to work correctly in
Internet Explorer 7?
With Release 6, Application Pack 3 and Release 7
of the Blackboard Academic Suite, end users must
add the Blackboard Academic Suite server to
their list of trusted sites in Internet Explorer

the list of trusted sites, the Visual Text Box
Editor will not function correctly. The
formatting and content controls will appear, but
the text box itself will appear broken.

Academic Suite server to the list of trusted
sites.

Login to the Blackboard Academic Suite and navigate to a page
that uses the Visual Text Box Editor..

of Trusted Sites. When accessing the Academic

of Trusted Sites..
3.
Double-click the Status Bar where the Restricted Sites or the
Internet icon appears. The Internet Security
Properties box will open..
4.
Click on the Trusted Sites icon under the Select a zone to view

to open the Trusted Sites box..
5.
The URL for the Blackboard Academic Suite server should appear in
the Add this website to the zone field. If not,
enter the URL that is used to access the
Blackboard Academic Suite in the field..
6.
If the URL for the Blackboard Academic Suite does not use SSL
security, uncheck the Require Server
Verification (https:) for all sites in this zone
option. If the URL for the Blackboard Academic
Suite uses SSL security the URL will begin with
https:// If the URL does not use SSL security
the URL will begin with http:// .
7.
Click Add..
8.
Click Close..
9.
Click OK on the Internet Security Properties box..
10.
Refresh the page..

'Microsoft (R) Dynamic HTML Editing Control'
from 'Microsoft Corporation'. If you trust the
website and the add-on and want to allow it to
run, click here...".
12.

that I am using Microsoft Vista. What can I
do?
One solution is to download Firefox, another web
browser, and see if this works. Until Microsoft
fixes the problem with an update of their
creation, problems may occur. LInk to Firefox:
