Spring 2010 Welcome to Surv 102
Advanced Land Surveying!! In this class you will
continue to develop your understanding of land surveying, field
practices, and surveying related calculations.
Course Format:
This is a HYBRID course. For an explanation of the
difference between online and hybrid courses, please read

The online portion of this course is offered using Blackboard.
Please see the technical requirements indicated below for
additional information on Blackboard.
It should be noted that this is not a self paced
course. There are weekly due dates and assignments. It is
important that you attend every class meeting and visit the
Blackboard classroom each week.
Exams will be given during class meetings and may be given
through Blackboard.

This course starts on Wednesday, February 10, 2010 and ends
on Thursday, June 3, 2010.

The first class meeting is Wednesday, February 10, 2010
from 5:00 6:00pm in ALLB 102 on the Valencia Campus.
This is a required class meeting and it is essential that
you attend!
The remaining class meetings will focus on the Surveying lab
material and will meet from 9:00 am 3:00pm on the Valencia
Campus in ALLB 102 on 2/26, 3/12, 3/26, 4/23, 5/7, and 5/21. All
of these meetings take place on a Friday.
Contacting the Instructor:
Course Overview: This course will cover advanced Land
Surveying concepts in several ways. Through the use of
Blackboard, a course management system, lecture topics,
articles, essays, video links and weblinks will be provided to
introduce new topics on a regular basis.
Additionally, you will learn how to operate the surveying
equipment and execute the concepts in a field environment during
the course labs.
Homework will be assigned through Blackboard and will either
be submitted via Blackboard, email, or during class time as
indicated. Homework will generally consist of reading material
and answering questions from the textbook. There will be exams
and lab reports.

Access to the course:
Please note that all students will progress through the
course together at the same pace. Your success in this class
depends on the willingness to dedicate approximately 10 or more
hours per week (the amount of time spent on a regular lecture
class). To be successful it is necessary to be highly
self-motivated.

Surveying Principles and Applications. 8th
Edition. By Barry F. Kavanagh
Published by Pearson Prentice Hall 2008

You will also need a scientific calculator and a field book.
Scientific calculators can easily be purchased in the campus
bookstore, at WalMart, Staples, Office Depot and a number of
other stores. The important features are trigonometric functions
(Tan, Cos, Sin) and conversions of degrees, minutes, and seconds
to decimal degrees and back. The field book is available in the
campus bookstore.
In addition you will need a reliable internet connection, an
email address, and basic computer skills including familiarity
with basic windows formats, opening and closing files, sizing
windows, starting programs, sending emails, attaching documents,
and basic file management skills.
As indicated above, you will need an email account.
You are responsible for maintaining an active email account for
the whole semester and for keeping me and your fellow classmates
informed of any changes in your email address for the duration
of the course. You are expected to check your email daily.
Otherwise, you may miss important course information.
Your email address will be available to your classmates as
well as me. If you are concerned about privacy, then you can
establish an email account specifically for this course at one
of the many free email service providers (yahoo.com, hotmail.com,
etc.). Students are not allowed to
share an email address regardless of your relationship with the
other student. For example, husbands and wives, mothers and sons
or daughters, significant others, etc. must each have their own
email address.

Discover Engineering!! This is a 100% online course!
This course will introduce you to the exciting field of
engineering and allow you to design and construct your very own
engineering projects. I am writing to provide you with important
information before we begin the class.

from the internet. As I noted above, you should have regular
access to the Internet.
