Dear Student:
I would like to introduce myself to you. I am Wendy
Brill-Wynkoop (pronounced wine-coupe), Department Chair of
Photography at College of the Canyons, and your instructor
for this hybrid course. Welcome to a wonderful course that
will introduce you to the use of cameras and composing
photographic images.
Many students register for distance-learning courses
believing that it will require less time. Though you will
spend less time in the classroom the art of discovering
information, and the responsibility of scheduling learning
into your busy lives, will be on your shoulders. In
reality, many distance-learning courses are more of a time
commitment than a traditional lecture course, and I praise
you for being up to the challenge.
There are several things you should be aware of before we
begin:
1. This is a Field Studies Class: Classes
meetings include on campus, mandatory field trips and online
instruction.
·
Valencia Campus Meetings:
class will meet on the Valencia campus on Mondays, from
11:10 am - 2:10 pm, 10/5, 10/12, 11/2 & 11/16.
·
Camp Tahquitz Meetings:
there are two mandatory weekend trips to Camp Tahquitz
field station south of Big Bear, which will take
place 10/16-10/18 and 11/6-11/8. Please visit
www.canyons.edu/fieldstudies for more information.
·
Online Component:
It is ESSENTIAL that you read through ALL
course materials located on the course website. The course
website will be available beginning the first day of class
(please see the schedule of classes for specific date).
2. This course requires concurrent enrollment with
Geology 100: Section 71625.
This class is part of a learning community. Learning
communities are pairs or clusters of courses that revolve
around a central theme. This is a combination lab/field
studies class.
3. Course Website: http://bb.canyons.edu/ (note
there is NO “www”)
·
Your login is your 7 digit COC student ID number: ID #
1234567, would login 1234567
·
Password is “student” (For current/past Blackboard students,
use the password you submitted)
·
For assistance with the Blackboard site:
http://www.canyons.edu/Offices/Distance_Learning/ or call

bbsupport@canyons.edu
4. The first step after your login should include
resetting your password and entering your email address.
Both of these steps can be completed under the “Tools” menu
and then click “Personal Information”.
5. You should be computer literate, with at least basic
knowledge of Internet navigation and email procedures. The
college can only provide minimal technological support.
6. You must have access to
a film or digital manually adjustable camera
as well as imaging editing software, both of which are
necessary for the successful completion of this course. If
you do not own a camera the college photo lab, located in
Mentry Hall, Room 121, has both film and digital cameras
available for 7-day checkout. In order to check out a
camera you must present a copy of your class schedule and
your valid COC student ID. If you don’t know if your camera
is capable of manual exposure then stop by the lab for
help.
7. The course will require approximately 10-12 hours of time
per week and your daily presence on the class discussion
board is required.
Generally, each week you can expect to complete the
following coursework:
·
Read 2-3 chapters from your textbook, Barbara London’s
Short Course in Photography, 7th Edition,
ISBN-13: 9780136038171, which can be purchased at the COC
bookstore or at an online book reseller.

Complete one photo-based assignment and participate in an
online critique for that assignment.
·
Participate in an online discussion regarding a specific
discussion topic.
·
Complete one online quiz.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to email
me.
Sincerely,
